Vibrations and noises that occur duringvehicle operation are absorbed. Fuel consumption isreduced. This results in economical drivingcomfort.Dual mass flywheel is a multi-clutch devicewhich is used to dampen vibration that occurs due tothe slight twist in the crankshaft during the powerstroke .When the power stroke subsides, the crankshaftuntwists. One wouldn't think a crankshaft would twistto any significance, but any piece of metal alwaysdeflects a little when a force is applied to it. The ratethat these vibrations occur is referred to as thetorsional frequency. Transaxles experience torsionalvibrations also. When torsional frequencies of thecrankshaft match those of the transaxle an effectknown as torsional resonance occurs, which maycause excessive wear on the drivetrain components. Keywords — DMF,Multi-clutch,Damper, Drivetrain.1.INTRODUCTIONThe dual mass flywheel (DMF) can create animproved driving experience for manual shiftvehicles. The main function of the dual mass flywheelis to absorb engine vibrations before they aretransmitted to the driveline, where they may creategear rattle or excessive wear. To achieve this, theconventional flywheel is divided into two sections. The primary section is attached to the crankshaft. Theprimary and secondary sections are connected throughsprings to isolate engine vibrations from beingtransmitted to the transmission. The clutch is boltedonto the secondary section of the flywheel.1.2 Why to Use Dual Mass FlywheelThe periodic combustion cycles of a 4-strokeengine create torque fluctuations which causestorsional vibration to be passed down the drivetrain. The resulting noise and vibration, such as gear rattle, body boom and load change vibration, results in atorsional vibration caused by the engine’s rotatingmass. Owing to its integral spring/damper system, theDMF almost entirely absorbs this torsional vibration. The result: very good vibration damping.Crankshaft torsional vibration occurs because eachpower stroke tends to slightly twist the crankshaft. When the power stroke subsides, the crankshaftuntwists. One wouldn't think a crankshaft would twistto any significance, but any piece of metal alwaysdeflects a little when a force is applied to it. The ratethat these vibrations occur is referred to as l vibrations also. When torsional frequenciesof the crankshaft match those of the transaxle an effectknown as torsional resonance occurs, which maycause excessive wear on the drivetrain components.2. Working Principle of Dual Mass FlywheelThe functioning principle of a DMF is simple, yetefficient. Owing to the additional mass on thetransmission input shaft, the vibration torque range,Fig.6 Transfer of Torsional Vibrations in DMFAs shown in fig.6 the engine vibrations are reducedbefore they are transmitted to the driveline.which is normally between 1,200 rpm and 2,400 rpmwith original torsion dampers, is moved to a lowerresonance speed range. This ensures excellentdamping of engine vibration even at idle speed.Fig.7 Working Principle of Dual Mass Flywheel4.1 With and without Dual Mass FlywheelFig 5. This preventspossible from the rest of the drive train.
