Apply the following safety rules in every situation, with any kind of firearm. Never point a firearm at anyone or anything youdo not intend to shoot whether or not it is loaded. This is particularly important when loading, unloading, or field stripping thefirearm. ALWAYS control the direction of the firearm. ALWAYS TREAT EVERY FIREARM AS IF IT IS LOADEDAND WILL FIRE. Do not take anyone’s word that the firearmis unloaded – always check for yourself. Never pass yourfirearm to another person until the action is open and you visually check that it is unloaded. Keep your firearm unloaded andsafely stored when not in use. NEVER PLACE YOUR FINGER INSIDE THE TRIGGERGUARD OR ON THE TRIGGER UNLESS YOU INTEND TOFIRE. Ensure that other objects do not touch the trigger. ALWAYS BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT ISBEYOND IT. Always be sure of where the bullet will strike andshoot only where there is a safe back stop free of obstructions,water or other surfaces which can cause ricochets. Be sureyour bullet will stop behind your target. Bullets can glance offmany surfaces like rocks or the surface of water and travel inunpredictable directions with considerable velocity. Do not firerandomly into the sky. NEVER CROSS OBSTACLES SUCH AS FENCES ORSTREAMS WITH A LOADED FIREARM. Always make certainyour firearm is unloaded before crossing a fence, climbing atree, jumping a ditch or negotiating other obstacles. SAFE FIREARM HANDLING IS YOUR PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY AT ALL TIMES. Firearms can be dangerous and cancause serious injury or death if they are misused or used inappropriately. Safety must be the prime consideration of any onewho owns or handles firearms. Accidents are the result of violating the rules of safe firearm handling and common sense.Firearm safety training is available. Contact your firearms dealer, law enforcement agency, local sportsman’s club, the NRA,etc. for availability. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FIREARM AT ALLTIMES. In owning a firearm, you must undertake full-timeresponsibility for your firearm’s safety and security. You mustprotect yourself and all others against injury or death from misuse of the firearm 24 hours a day. FIREARM SECURITY IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. You mustsecure firearms safely from children and/or unauthorized users.Your firearm should always be kept unloaded and locked whennot in use. Never assume that the use of this lock is sufficientto safely secure your firearm. You must always evaluate yourpersonal situation and employ the security systems that meetyour needs and prevent children and unauthorized users fromgaining access to your firearm.4

For example target shooting, hunting and lawful resistance of deadly criminal force. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are in compliance with all applicable laws and ordinances regarding theuse of your firearm. NEVER RELY ON MECHANICAL FEATURES ALONE. Onlyyour safe firearm-handling habits will ensure the safe use ofyour firearm. This is your responsibility. ALWAYS SAFELY STORE AND SECURE YOUR FIREARM.Safe and secure storage of your firearm is one of your mostimportant responsibilities. It is a full-time responsibility. Youmust always secure your firearm and ammunition separately sothat they are not accessible to children and/or other unauthorized persons. NEVER KEEP AMMUNITION IN THE SAME LOCATION ASTHE FIREARM. Store each in a separate and secure place. ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION THAT IS SPECIFIEDFOR USE WITH FIREARMS every time you handle yourfirearm for cleaning and maintenance. ALWAYS WEAR EYE AND EAR PROTECTORS THAT ARESPECIFIED FOR USE WITH FIREARMS every time you discharge your firearm. Make sure others in the vicinity of whereyou will be shooting do so as well. NEVER USE ALCOHOL OR DRUGS BEFORE OR WHILESHOOTING. Do not use your firearm if you are on any medication which impairs, even slightly, your mental or physical ability. ALWAYS HAVE ADEQUATE VENTILATION. Dischargingfirearms in poorly ventilated areas, cleaning firearms, or handling ammunition may result in exposure to lead and other substances known to cause birth defects, reproductive harm, andother serious physical injury. Review the warnings and labelsfor all ammunition and cleaning products carefully. Wash handsthoroughly after exposure. BEFORE HANDLING ANY FIREARM, UNDERSTAND ITSOPERATION. Not all firearms are the same. Familiarize yourself with the mechanical features of any firearm you intend touse. If you feel uncertain about any operational aspects of yourfirearm, please contact Thompson/Center, before proceedingwith its operation. NEVER ALLOW A FIREARM TO BE USED BY INDIVIDUALSWHO DO NOT UNDERSTAND ITS SAFE OPERATION ORHAVE NOT READ THESE FIREARM SAFETY RULES.5

Never use non-standard, reloaded, or “handloaded”ammunition which has not been subjected to internal ballisticpressure testing. BEWARE OF BARREL OBSTRUCTIONS Be sure the barrel isclear of obstructions before shooting. Mud, water, snow or otherobjects may inadvertently lodge in the barrel bore. A small obstruction can cause a dangerous increase in pressure and may damageyour firearm and cause injury to yourself and others. BE SURE ALL ACCESSORIES, SUCH AS HOLSTERS,GRIPS, SLINGS, SCOPES AND OTHER ACCESSORIESARE COMPATIBLE with the firearm and that the accessoriesdo not interfere with safe operation. It is your responsibility tounderstand and follow all of the instructions in this manual,aswell as those which may be supplied with your ammunition andany accessory. NEVER DISASSEMBLE YOUR FIREARM beyond the fieldstripping procedure outlined in this manual. Improper disassembly or reassembly of your firearm may be dangerous andcan lead to serious injury or death. NEVER MANIPULATE, ADJUST OR CHANGE ANY OF THEINTERNAL COMPONENTS OF YOUR FIREARM UNLESSSPECIFICALLY INSTRUCTED TO DO SO IN THIS MANUAL.Improper manipulation of any other internal component mayaffect the safety and reliability of your firearm and may causeserious injury or death. There are other alternative locks and safe storage containers available in the marketplace which may also be appropriate for your particular needs.Consult your local gun shop, hardware store, or local policedepartment for guidance on the variety of other safe storagedevices or practices which may be appropriate for your particular needs. By purchasing this firearm you have accepted theresponsibility of safely securing the firearm at all times and preventing its unauthorized use. Never assume that the use of thislock alone is sufficient to safely secure your firearm. Safe and secure storage of your firearmand ammunition are your responsibility. It is a full-time responsibility. NEVER ASSUME THAT A “HIDING” PLACE IS A SECURESTORAGE METHOD. Others may be aware of your storagelocation or come upon it by chance. It is your personal responsibility to use common sense when storing your firearm andammunition and to always make sure they are not accessibleto children or other unauthorized persons. NEVER TRANSPORT A LOADED FIREARM. When transporting your firearm, be sure it is unloaded and locked. Safe andsecure transportation of your firearm is your responsibility. ALWAYS FOLLOW THE LAW! Many jurisdictions have lawsthat make it a crime to keep a firearm unlocked and in an areaaccessible to children or others. Keeping a firearm locked andunloaded when not in use is not only common sense safetypractice. IT IS THE LAW. You must be familiar with all local,state, and federal laws regarding the safe storage and transportation of your firearm. Align the holes in the forend over theholes in the barrel (FIGURE 14) and secure the forend intoplace using the supplied screws. With your finger away from the trigger and the hammer in the“AT REST” position, open the barrel by holding the firearm bythe pistol grip and pulling up and back on the trigger guardspur to unlock the barrel, allowing it to tip down (FIGURE 15). Practice opening and closing the Encore before you attemptto load and fire it.Note: Place your finger low on the spur for maximum leverage,and give it a fast, sharp pull to open the barrel.Note: The modular nature of the Encore design also allowseasy interchange of barrels, grips and forends along with sightsand scope mounts (see our catalog or web site for currentoptions).WARNING: DO NOT ADD OR REPLACE ANY OF THEPARTS IN YOUR FIREARM UNLESS THEY ARE GENUINE THOMPSON/CENTER PARTS AND YOU FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS SUPPLIED. ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES SPECIFIED FORFIREARM USE, whether indoors or out. Safety glasses shouldprotect your eyes from the firing flash and particles associatedwith the discharge of ammunition. Failure to do so creates a riskof personal injury from particle or debris spitting or ricochets. ALWAYS BE ALERT AND ALWAYS FOLLOW THE SAFETYINSTRUCTIONS OF THE RANGE OFFICER. Never shoot ifyou are tired, cold or impaired in any way. ALWAYS BE AWARE OF OTHER PEOPLE so that personsdo not accidentally walk into the line of fire. THE SHOOTER (AND ALL OTHERS IN THE SHOOTINGAREA) MUST ALWAYS BE IN A POSITION THAT IS OUTOF THE LINE OF FIRE and are not within an area where theymay be struck by a ricochet or particles spitting from a firearm,or by ejected cases from some types of firearms. NEVER SHOOT AT SURFACES THAT MAY CAUSE A RICOCHET.Always select a place to shoot that has a safe backstop, is free fromobstructions and has no surfaces which may cause a ricochet. NEVER FIRE RANDOMLY INTO THE SKY. Always select aplace to shoot that has a safe backstop. NEVER USE ALCOHOL OR DRUGS BEFORE OR WHILESHOOTING OR HANDLING ANY FIREARM.16

To load the Encore , open the action by pulling up and backon the spur of the trigger guard (FIGURE 16). The barrel tiltsdownward at the muzzle (FIGURE 17). Push the cartridge forward into the chamber (FIGURES 18and 19). Rotate the barrel up to close the action. Do not force the barrel closed on a live round. If the barreldoesn’t close smoothly, remove the cartridge from the chamber and inspect it and the firearm’s chamber. If you are unableto recognize and correct the problem, call theThompson/Center Customer Service Dept. at 866-730-1614.WARNING: NEVER USE CARTRIDGES OR SHELLSOTHER THAN THOSE DESIGNATED BY THE MARKING ON THE BARREL. Draw the hammerback to the full rearward “Cocked” position (FIGURE 21). The Encore willnow fire when pressure is applied to thetrigger. Place your fingeron the trigger andsqueeze it until thefirearm fires.Do Not Load The Encore Until You Are Ready To Fire It!FIGURE 20Move Hammer to “COCKED” positionwith finger away from triggerFIGURE 21 If you decide not tofire; make sure the firearm isalways pointed in a safe direction- then you must carefully lowerthe hammer from the "Cocked"position to the "At Rest" position.To do this, place the thumb ofyour free hand between the hammer and the frame to prevent thehammer from moving fully forward until your finger is off thetrigger and out of the triggerguard (FIG. 22). Place the thumb of your firinghand on the hammer spur. Youmust always control the hammerwith your thumbs when decocking the firearm.
