CHALLENGE TO SUCCEED Home Study WorkbookGOALSHow to Change Emotional Response into Results6It is easy to let life deteriorate into making a livinginstead of designing a life. It is easy to get trapped byeconomic necessity and settle for existence ratherthan substance. The best way to break out of that trapis to plan your escape by learning how to set goals. While reasons give us the broad, general direction ofOr perhaps he does not fall victim to diminishingintent. However, about halfway up he loses his senseof direction. Soon, without being aware of it, he isclimbing sideways around the mountain. He couldconceivably spend years going around and aroundin circles, full of the best intentions and the firmestwhy to get going, goals give us the specific day by day, week by week, year by year where to get going.Goals can revolutionize your future—financially, socially, personally and professionally. Goals are thestepping stones of success. They are the means bywhich we chart our course and they are the meansby which we prevent ourselves from being pulledoff course. You see, without goals—a written plan—to direct us, two things can easily happen: eitherwe will give up because it seems too difficult or wewill wander aimlessly for years in search of a finaldestination we may never reach for lack of a welldefined plan.Let’s go back to our mountain climbing example toillustrate these points. The man’s reason for climbingthe mountain was to get rich. He begins the climb, butafter an hour or so, his physical endurance begins todiminish. He starts to notice the cuts on his hands. The risk of falling off the mountain begins to haunthim. The top of the mountain seems to be getting nocloser—it’s too hard to reach and too far to climb.Suddenly he lets go and starts the downward slide tothe bottom. He has given up.resolve, but never getting any closer to the top.Carefully planning your climb to the top is essential.By breaking the long climb into individual goals, younot only prevent yourself from wandering off course, but also you give yourself cause for celebration andself-congratulations along the way—and celebrationand self-congratulations are essential. It is theaccomplishment of each small goal that gives youthe inspiration, the energy and the renewed desire totackle the next. This is the reason why we break goalsinto two categories:1. SHORT RANGE: These are your goals fortomorrow, next week, next month, the immediatefuture. Short-range goals are also called “confidencebuilders.” They are the steps by which we remindourselves of both direction and progress.2. LONG RANGE: These are objectives you set foryourself in terms of years instead of months. Wheredo you want to be in five years? What do you wantto own in ten years? How much money do you wantto have in the bank in twenty years? And so forth.Essentially, these are your dreams which practicalplanning can and will turn into tangible realities.

Here is a simple way of looking at reasons and goals:REASON:I want to be financially independent.LONG-RANGE GOAL: In five years, I will have carried the chest of gold from the top of themountain and deposited the contents at the bank.SHORT-RANGE GOAL:(a) buy a rope and pick for the climb(b) reach an elevation of 1,000 feet each Wednesday(c) read “The Mountain Climber’s Guide” in the evenings as I climb toperfect my skills and lower the dangers and risks.Whether we are aware of it or not, most of what we have achieved at this very moment is a result of reasons andgoals. The young man who decides at the age of 16 that he wants to devote his life to finding a cure for the diseasethat took his brother’s life (reason), makes a decision to attend medical school to get his degree (long-range goal),and to find a part-time job this summer to fund his tuition (short-range goal).7

CHALLENGE TO SUCCEED Home Study WorkbookEXERCISEThink of a recent or past achievement in your own life. In the space below, outline the reasons that motivatedyou to pursue this goal. Next, list the steps (short range goals) you took to succeed, whether you planned thesesteps consciously or unconsciously.ACHIEVEMENT:REASON:LONG-RANGE GOAL:SHORT-RANGE GOAL(s):8

GETTING SERIOUS ABOUT THE FUTUREIf we have been able to achieve things in the pastwith only minimal conscious planning, imagine theincredible accomplishments we can look forward to inthe future if we get serious about our plans! We have already made our list of “reasons.” We knowwhy we are ready to climb the mountain. What wewant to establish now is what specifically we expectThere are many areas of our life where this kind ofplanning is essential. To help simplify the process,we will use the same headings for setting goals as wedid for our Analysis of Current Direction: economic, career, family/social, personal, lifestyle.Granted, these are very broad categories to look at,but it is always best to get the big picture before weto find there. In other words, where are we going andwhat are our long-range goals?start to focus on the individual details.WE KNOW WHYWE ARE READY TOCLIMB THE MOUNTAIN.WHAT WE WANT TOESTABLISH NOW IS WHATSPECIFICALLY WE EXPECTTO FIND THERE.9

CHALLENGE TO SUCCEED Home Study WorkbookDON’T BE AFRAID TO DREAM!10For the purpose of this exercise, we are going to askyou to focus on a date ten years from today. Wherewould you like to be living? What would you like to bedoing? How much money would you like to be earning?Do not be surprised if you draw a blank in answerto these questions. “How am I supposed to see tenyears into the future,” you might well ask, “if I canLet go of reality for just a moment. Let go of anyobstacles you might currently see standing betweenyou and your better future. Let go of the phrase Ican’t and replace it with I can. Believe that all thingsare possible. Other people have become millionaires, why not you? Other people have changed careers withadmirable success late in life, why not you? Otherbarely predict what might be happening in my life nextweek?” As logical, practical, rational adults, you haveprobably been taught that dreams have no place in the“real” world. How often, as we approached adulthood, did we hear expressions such as “Just wait until youget out into the real world . until you have bills to pay. kids to feed . a boss to contend with. Then you’ll seethat there is no room for dreaming.” But let us sharewith you a unique discovery. not only is it acceptableto dream as adult, it is impossible to grow withoutdreams! Without something to look forward to,without something to hope for, without something todream about one day owning, seeing, doing or feeling, why would any of us want to go on living? If your onlyreason for getting out of bed each morning is to be ableto pay your electric bill at the end of each month, howincredibly futile life would seem.Think back for a moment to your childhood years.Surely when asked the question, “What do you wantto be when you grow up?” you didn’t reply, ‘’I don’tcare; I just want to be able to pay my electric bill everymonth.” We are all blessed with the ability to dream.Unfortunately, somewhere along the line we havereplaced our childish excitement and visions withmortgage payments, the price of milk, and a day inwhich the hours from 9am to 5pm seem to last forever.people know the joy of finding the perfect mate, ofcruising on a yacht through the Greek Isles, of learningto speak a new language, of driving a luxury car, ofstanding at an easel and capturing in oil the gloriousseascape before them . why not you? Before you attempt to complete the followingexercise, take the time to close your eyes, turn off thosenegative voices, and dream. Find a quiet place whereyou can dream undisturbed. (The reading room in mostpublic libraries is an excellent location for dreaming!)Setting goals is hard work—that is why a lot ofpeople let it slide. People work hard on their jobs, butnot on themselves or their future. The key word hereis planning. As someone once said, “People who failto plan are planning to fail.” Success is doing what thefailures won’t or don’t do.In the next few pages you will be asked to write downyour long-range goals. A word of caution: don’t just do itin your mind—write them down. Not only will it showa greater degree of serious intent on your part, but alsothere is something magical about putting dreams onpaper . it begins the whole process of achievement. One final note: if you can’t think of what you dowant, sometimes it helps to think in terms of whatyou don’t want.

LONG-RANGE GOALS: ECONOMICWe all dream of financial independence, but what does it mean to you? How much money do you want to havein the bank? Do long-term investments such as real estate, insurance or pension plans make up part of your tenyear picture? What income would you require to live the life you really want to live?IN TEN YEARS, MY ECONOMIC SITUATION WILL BE AS FOLLOWS:Remember, it is better to aim for the stars and reach the moon than to aim for the moon and never get offthe ground.11

CHALLENGE TO SUCCEED Home Study WorkbookLONG-RANGE GOALS: CAREERIs there a career change you would like to make? Would you prefer to work for someone or have your ownbusiness? Is there a position in your current company that you would like to hold?THE CAREER I WILL HAVE IN TEN YEARS IS .See yourself doing what you truly want to do. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the good feelings you have aboutyourself and the world around you when you put yourself into the right picture.12

LONG-RANGE GOALS: FAMILY/SOCIALAre there certain things you want to make possible for family members or special friends? Is there a changeyou wish to make in your current social or family situation? Is there a particular circle of influence you wouldlike to be a part of ?THE RELATIONSHIPS I WILL DEVELOP AND THE SPHERES OFINFLUENCE I WILL HAVE ACCESS TO IN TEN YEARS ARE .You cannot change people, but you can always change your attitude toward them.13

CHALLENGE TO SUCCEED Home Study WorkbookLONG-RANGE GOALS: PERSONALIdeally, what kind of person would you like to become? Are there certain habits you want to develop orovercome? Are there skills at which you would like to be proficient? Is there a particular person you admire andwant to be like? In ten years will you be more confident, decisive, independent, physically fit?THE PERSON I WILL BECOME IN TEN YEARS IS .It is foolhardy to want an above-average position with an above-average income without first becoming anabove-average person.14

LONG-RANGE GOALS: LIFESTYLEAs Shakespeare once said, “All the world’s a stage, and the men and women merely players.” Lifestyle is thestage upon which you choose to “act out” your life. This encompasses everything from the clothes you will bewearing to the places you choose to travel to or live in. What kind of home do you dream about living in? In whatcity? What model of car would you like to be driving? Does having the freedom to pick up and go at frequentintervals throughout the year appeal to you? Perhaps you have always longed for a baby grand piano, a dark roomfor your hobby, unlimited time to spend painting, the freedom to sleep ‘til noon and have breakfast in bed or torise at the crack of dawn to get started on an exciting project.THE THINGS I WILL SEE, DO, OWN, ENJOY, EXPERIENCE IN THENEXT TEN YEARS ARE .If you cannot clearly see your own better future, you may not have one.15

CHALLENGE TO SUCCEED Home Study WorkbookOnce again we offer sincere and hearty congratulations. Of all the exercises you will be asked to do in thisworkbook, setting goals is perhaps the most challenging because it requires not only the ability to dream, but alsothe ability to believe that such dreams are possible.A good question to ask yourself at this moment is whether or not you omitted anything from your lists becauseyou didn’t believe you could ever have it. Don’t sell yourself short. Other people have turned their dreams intoreality, why not you?Check the size and quality of your goals. This is important because your goals will affect your life—everythingfrom your attitude and your personality to the way you dress, walk and talk. There is a major difference betweenan individual whose goal is to one day own a million dollar estate and one whose goal is merely to move from aone- to a two-bedroom apartment. The next logical question is, “Now that I know what I want, how do I go about getting it?”16
