SYNOPSISH,ollywood Bulldogs tells therough-and-tumble story of thesmall community of British stuntperformers who went on to dominateHollywood in the 1970s and 80s.Growing out of the ragtag communityof bouncers, gangsters and demobbed soldiers who were preparedto take a punch or chuck themselvesdown a flight of stairs for a fewJim Dowdall Enemy At The Gates4HOLLYWOOD BULLDOGSquid, the next generation went onto turn stunt work into a legitimateprofession.Partying and drinking their waythrough death and tragedy, theycreated and performed the iconicaction sequences of 007, IndianaJones, Superman, Rambo, Star Wars,Conan, the Alien films and prettymuch everything since.Tony Curtis & Doug RobinsonThey crashed cars, jumped fromburning buildings, shot, stabbed, kicked and punched their way intocinema history and all before thearrival of CGI.Bulldogs is the first feature lengthdocumentary to unite this legendarycommunity in telling their story andas you’ll see, there’s life in the olddogs yet .John Wayne & Frank Henson

DIRECTOR’S VISIONI like to tell stories that haven’t beentold and perhaps lift the curtain onthings which are culturally veryfamiliar to reveal whole communitiesof people living just outsidethe limelight. The Hollywood bulldogs are a bunchof tough old geezers with great6HOLLYWOOD BULLDOGSstories to tell. They’re the guys whotook the punches, did the falls andcrashed the vehicles of the greatestcinematic characters of the 60s, 70sand 80s - Indiana Jones, James Bond,Superman, Flash Gordon and the restof them.Interviewing these guys was one ofthe great pleasures of my life. They’reall now in differing states of healthand prosperity but they gave us theirall and every one of them sparkleswith charisma - the footage we gotis tremendous.Having gone to screenings ofELSTREE 1976 all over the world, Iknow there’s a great and enthusiasticaudience for films like this anyway, but this one is so action-packed andfilled with fun that I think there’s awhole new audience out there whoare going to embrace this film and fallin love with the Bulldogs just like all ofus who are working on the film have.I really hope you’ll join us on thisadventure. Don’t forget to bring yourelbow pads!Photo: Harrison Ford & Vic Armstrong Below: Vic Armstrong in Indina JonesI’m incredibly excited to bringHollywood Bulldogs out to a globalaudience. Both of my previous featuredocumentaries have focused onpeople who exist on the periphery ofpop culture.

THE RISE AND FALLS OF THE GREATBRITISH STUNTMAN: HISTORYVic ArmstrongGreg PowellDoug RobinsonRay AustinJim DowdallPaul WestonRocky TaylorFrank HensonRichard HammattStunts were first recognized bysilent movie production companiesin the early 1900s in Hollywood. Withgenuine cowboy farming dying out,it was no surprise that productioncompanies recruited former or outof-work cowboys to recreate theirrough-and-tumble skills on film, largely for the entertainment ofcity dwellers.which, when stacked correctly, wouldcollapse and break the fall. As theysay: ‘it isn’t the fall that hurts butthe stopping’! Cardboard boxes havesince been superseded by the airbag. The British stunt business reallygot off the ground in the late 1940sand 1950s, led by such icons as JoePowell, Jock Easton, George Leech,Paddy Ryan, and Ken Buckle. Theywere the real groundbreakers, pooling their own money to drive tosuch places as Almeria in Spain, to tryto find work on American epics thatwere being made in Europe becauseof lower wage costs.A device called a fan descender, whichI invented in the early 1980’s enables astunt person to fall from great heightsat a controlled speed. It has been usedall over the world, on such movies asthe Indiana Jones trilogy, through toTitanic, and recently earned an awardfrom the Academy of Motion PicturesArts and Sciences. It was a natural progression for thesestrong, skilful, and fearless charactersto be employed to perform riskysequences in a whole range of otherearly movies, notably the amusing buthighly dangerous scenes in comedies, With all these advances in technologysuch as the Keystone Cops.the stunt person has had to modernizeas well. In Great Britain there is nowModern technology and new materials a system of qualification. Aspiringhave contributed enormously to the stuntmen and women have to attainstunt business. In the early days, advanced proficiency in severalstuntmen would perform high falls disciplines, such as horse riding, onto hay, but this was replaced by the sword-fencing, martial arts, diving, miracle of empty cardboard boxes, gymnastics, swimming, etc.Nowadays, stuntmen travel first-classand command top wages. Britain alsoproduces world-class stuntwomen, including Wendy Leech, who doubledthe heroines in the Indiana Jonestrilogy, Superman, and several JamesBond movies. British stunt people arenow considered the most proficient inthe world.Vic ArmstrongHOLLYWOOD BULLDOGS17
