Andduring the winter we attend model engineeringshows as well as work in our shops. I think thatshow reports, and shop progress reports wouldbe a worthy addition to the Gazette.Next MeetingThursday, September 5, 2002The Charles River Museum of Industry154 Moody StreetWaltham, MassachusettsFor the show report, what I'm envisioning is a 1 or2 page description of a particularly interestingengine that was there, who you saw there, andmaybe even what goodies you bought. Basically, let people know if it was a good show so nextyear, when it appears in the "upcoming events"calendar, people might be more interested inattending. A photo of a NEMES member or theinteresting engine at that show would be a greataddition. If you can't scan photos to email them, Ihave a scanner. Mailing photographs to mewould be fine.Annual dues of 25 covers from Jan to Jan.Please make checks payable to NEMES andsend to our treasurer. (Address in masthead).Missing a Gazette? Send mail or email to ourpublisher. (Address in masthead).I have written that type of report in the past for theWindsor, VT show (which will have happenedbetween the time I write this and the time youread it) and also Cabin Fever. For example, inNEMES Gazette1Nov 2002

late September, the Connecticut AntiqueMachinery Assn. had their annual show. I'venever been, but I understand it’s quite a show.Errol Groff sent me quite a few photos, and Ithank him for that. What about the Dublin, NH,show in early September? I haven't been there ina few years due to schedule conflicts. I knowseveral of our members are attending theAmerican Precision Museum show in LateOctober.Anyone taking photos? The lastGazette mentions that NEMES had an exhibit atthe Topsfield show. Did anyone take pictures ofour display, our members, or even an interestingcar at the show?President’s CornerNorm JonesThe MeetingOur speaker for November will be Louis Broad.Louis is associated with the CAPSAT program atthe Timberlane Regional High School in PlaistowNew Hampshire.CAPSAT (CoordinatedAlgebra(II) & Physics Simulated Satellite) is aneducational program at Timberlane wherePhysics and Algebra are taught in a manner toshow how math, science, and technology worktogether. The last quarter of the school year isspent producing a large-scale project thatinvolves high altitude ballooning, remote controlsystems, science, math and amateur radio. Moreinformation is available athttp://www.mv.com/ipusers/llb/capsat.htmlFor the "progress reports", I'm convinced thatsome of our members actually finish buildingsomething occasionally, unlike me. Send in apicture and brag! Maybe add a description ofsome tricky machining? A few months ago DaveStickler talked at the meeting about his twintangye, and I really liked the write up. I don’t wantto volunteer Dave for another, but I'm equally surehe's not the only person who's actually buildingstuff! You don't even have to have finished theproject, if you've hit what you consider to be amilestone, like finishing a major assembly, oreven the aforementioned difficult part, let usknow!Show SeasonBy the time you read this, the "regular" antiquemachinery shows will be over for the year. It'stime to get back to the shop once again and makesome "chips". Needless to say, I have quite aselection of casting sets to choose from. I amsure that I am not alone when it comes tostockpiling castings. They need to age! One setin particular that comes to mind is Jerry Howell'sRider Hot Air Engine. The postmark on the cartonsays Sept 8, 1999. How time flies! Jerry madeup 50 casting sets and I know that a number ofyou have one. I have yet to see one built. Wow,what small parts! You’ll find an excellent example of this in a fewpages. Rollie Evans has a short article on theburner he’s building for a boiler. Also, we’ve also had a “shop hints” column inprevious Gazettes. Don’t be afraid to send in littlehelpful tidbits that the rest of us might be able toapply.C’yaMikeCabin Fever ShowWe have 20 people signed up for the Cabin FeverShow bus trip. Cabin Fever is moving to a newlocation in York, PA and promises to be biggerand better than ever. There was a waiting list lastyear, so if you want to go, sign up early. There isa block of 30 rooms reserved at the Holiday InnHolidome. Please mention NEMES whenreserving a room. The rate is 75.21 includingNEMES Gazette2Nov 2002

We’ll have more information onthe bus arrangements later.Show & TellError Groff showed a mechanical mouse trapmade of sheet-metal.[Editor’s Note: See the article in this issue formore specifics on the estimated hotel and buscosts, as well as the reservation number.]Dick Boucher told us that small tubing can beeasily bent by making a 'bending bobbin' from ascrap of aluminum and showed a couple ofexamples, including the bender he used to makethe bends for the Simplex loco he is building.SecurityWe will be meeting in our regular location thismonth and therefore need to once again "watch"the front door of the museum until 7:00 PM.Thanks in advance for your help. See you on Nov7th!Ron Ginger regaled us with an amusing slideshow about the house and shop he is buildingdown in Maine.Jim Paquette announced that he had acquired abunch of steam engine kits that would soon beoffered for sale. He didn’t specify how many andwhat kind, but a list is in a previous issue of theGazette, in the For Sale section. It was agentleman in Texas selling his “project pile”NormScale Model HelicoptersJoe HowardAristotle's formula for happiness: ".the exerciseof vital powers along lines of excellence in a lifeaffording them scope." By this criterion, JoeHoward ought to be a happy man. He hasmanaged to turn his avocation, his hobby, building radio-controlled scale helicopters, into abusiness -- East Coast Scale Helicopters. Mostof the business is building custom radio controlledmodel helicopters to order, but each year he alsobuilds a half a dozen or so models that you canpurchase off-the-shelf for around 6000 each. The MeetingMax ben-AaronPresident Norm Jones called the meeting to orderin the ground-floor room at the Museum andwelcomed any new members. He drew attention to the Brown steam engine thatour esteemed Editor had previously mentioned.(See a separate article about it).To continue the saga of the welded aluminumchair: it was brought to a show and Gene Marthahad the courage to test it. It broke. Will it be rerepaired? Don't hold your breath. The American Precision Museum's Third ModelEngineering Show was on October 26 - 27. Weneed a volunteer to write a short report on theevent for the December Gazette.Joe Howard with Vario HelicopterNEMES Gazette3Errol Groff PhotoNov 2002

These are very complicated models, weighingabout 14 pounds each and powered by a 91 ccglow-plug engine. Unusually, model helicoptersare capable of aerobatics that full-sized machinesare unable to perform. The control skills are quitedifferent from real helicopter piloting and being areal pilot is not necessarily an advantage and mayeven be a disadvantage.compressor system. The models use acompressor fan that is driven by the glow-plugengine. The fan is a 5" diameter dual-sidedaluminum fan which absorbs about 25% of theavailable engine power. The door in the tailboom, which modulates the volume of control air,is slaved to the stick.Potential model helicopter pilots are advised tolearn on a stripped-down version to gain basicskills and to determine if their interest issustained. Only when these two requirementsare met, is it time to step up to a Joe Howardsuperb (and relatively expensive) model.RC HelicopterThe process of construction has two majorcomponents: the actual helicopter body, and themachinery and control systems that enable it toemulate (and even improve on) the properties offull-sized aircraft.Because of real-world scale effects (Reynold'snumbers and so forth), a model cannot simply bea scaled-down copy of the real thing. The modelsdiffer significantly from full-sized helicopters.Speeds do not scale linearly and the heads rotatethree times faster (in proportion) so models haveto have a 'fly-bar' above the main rotor that fullsized aircraft lack. Also, the main rotor blades ofmodels are not articulated in the same way. Inthe model, the fly-bar is under control and its pitchcontrols the main rotor to stabilize and maneuverthe aircraft. Due to gyroscopic precession, theforces are exerted 90 degrees later through aswash plate so the fly-bars control the pitch of themain rotors just like their big brothers. Forstabilization, the computer is programmed tocouple the throttle to the control system so thatconsistent rpm from hover point to full throttle canbe achieved. The elevator controls the speed. Allthe controls are coordinated by the computerthrough a "revolution mix".The body is a two-part fiberglass shell with awhite gelcoat finish, made by the Vario Companyin Germany. It is made in two halves in a mold, split along the vertical plane of symmetry. Afterthe two halves are glued together and the doorsand windows fitted, the propulsion, radio andcontrol mechanisms have to be fitted into thecavity. Quite a bit of machining goes into a modelto make the specific mechanisms work as theyshould.Depending on the options ordered by thecustomer, anywhere from five to twelve servosmay need to be integrated into the control system.Besides necessary yaw, pitch and roll servos, others may be required for pop-up machine guns,'rocket launchers' or other options. Joe broughtone of the most complicated available models toshow.Since painting and finishing models is a perpetualheadache to NEMES members, Joe wasextensively grilled about the techniques he usesto achieve the superb finishes evident in themodels he brought. Joe started out doing autofinishes and uses basically the same techniques. He uses a regular auto paint sprayer and waterbased auto finishes rather than an airbrush. Most conventional helicopters use a tail rotor foryaw control and to counteract the reaction to theangular momentum of the rotor. The beautifulmodels that Joe brought to show emulate the1980's McDonnell-Douglas NOTAR ("NO TAilRotor) system.McDonnel-Douglas' NOTARconcept, which was based on the standard 500Efuselage, uses reaction torque, generated by astream of air, much like the propulsive force of ajet. In a full-sized NOTAR helicopter, instead of atail rotor, the jet is generated by a separateNEMES GazetteErrol Groff photoHis advice boils down to this: Contrary to themodel engineering notion that "a coat of painthides a multitude of sins", Joe advises that thepaint exaggerates every flaw. The buswill be going to this hotel, and this hotel ONLY. Ifyou are planning on going, you must book a roomyourself!Sleeping on the bus is notrecommended (and probably not allowed!)He uses green putty and other methods to makesure that the body is flawless before evenpriming. He uses wet/dry abrasive paper, butnever wet.Estimated costs:? Bus: 62 (estimated)? Room: 150.42 for both nights, included.? Show entrance fee: 6 for both days.Contrary to conventional wisdom, Joe paints thedark colors first, then masks off the necessaryareas and sprays the lighter colors.taxesIf you only go to one show a year, it should be ourshow in February! But, this is the other show youmust attend. It is arguably the biggest in thecountry at this point. We have about another 30minutes drive this year because it has moved toan even bigger venue in York. Norm has prebooked 30 rooms at the Holiday Inn where we willbe staying, so when you call, make sure you sayyou’re with NEMES! The rate is 75.21 perroom, per night. You can double up if you want,or have a room to yourself. As usual, we will stopto pick-up and drop off Rollie, Frank and Allanalong the way. If anyone else needs to be pickedup, let me know and we will make mutuallyconvenient arrangements. We also make a lunchstop about half way. Thanks to Joe Howard for a fascinating andilluminating talk. tour of the engine and clock tower once with theStraw Hollow Engine club. Day Fay was along, looked at the engine and air line and instantly sawthe cutoff governor was set such that the enginewouldn't run, but by then the air line was dead, sowe didn't get to test this theory.NearbyStationaryenginesVarious NEMESmembersAfter DEC was sold, the mill building wasrenovated and that end of the building wasopened up to a lobby. The wall between it andthe engine was either removed or changed toglass. You can see it from the road passing by,but I have never had time to stop and look.In last month’s “Editor’s Desk”, Mike Bouchertalked about a C.H. Brown steam engine inChelmsford, MA.This prompted a bit ofdiscussion on the NEMES mailing list aboutstationary steam engines in the areaMarine BoilerBurnerFred Jaggi informed us that there are two articlesin the latest bulletin of the International StationarySteam Engine Society bulletin about C. H. Brownengines. One is a general article on the enginesand the other is about the 17" bore x 41" strokeengine that was donated by Clark's trading post tothe Connecticut Antique Machinery Association.Rollie EvansJay Stryker mentioned that, at the BrickstoneCompany's mill, High Street in North Andover,MA, there is a reception area and behind it is theremains of the mill engines: a large horizontal, and two high-speed engines for dynamos. Theboiler house is gone, but the smokestack was stillstanding in 1997.I brought my new burner that I have beendeveloping to Roland Gaucher's open house. Ithought I would show the new burner I am makingfor my new marine boiler.David Stickler mentioned an gas engine in theHarvard/Ayer, MA area. Going north on Route111 from route 2, toward Ayer, there is a tractordealer with a largish gas engine out front (town orproducer, I would guess.) It has a Bessemernameplate, and is built essentially as a horizontalsteam engine, except for the cylinder. It looks likemost of the intake and ignition components arelong gone, but the basic engine appears intact. It is not a new idea. They were made in Scotlandin the late 1800 before electricity was available. Ihave been unable to find detailed drawings but dohave a description of operation. The mode of operation is to self generate steam.A pressurized tank of air over water is used. Theair is used to atomize the oil till the vaporizingcoils get hot enough, less then a minute and thena three way valve is used to switch over to water.Ron Ginger mentioned an engine in the millbuilding in formerly owned by Digital EquipmentCorp. (DEC) in Maynard, MA. At the WalnutStreet end of the old DEC mill there is a lobbyentrance now that has the horizontal steamengine and a generator. The water is vaporized to steam at the pressure inthe tank, about 10 to 20 pounds. Super heated, the actual temperature is much higher. The mainproblem I had was to size the coils large enoughto vaporize the water. They are now 1/2" ODStainless steel and have a 3/8" metal filler in thecenter of the tube so the water is only on theinside skin of the tube. The engine was the first electrical plant inMaynard and has remained intact, at least it wasintact as long as DEC owned the building. One ofDEC’s Vice Presidents tried to get it to run oncompressed air. He never got it to go. We had aNEMES Gazette6Nov 2002

The other problem is the nozzle design. It has togive a cone or flat wide spread to the flame so thevaporizer tubes get hot enough to make steam. Italso has to be designed to draw suction on thefuel so it can be below the burner and without apump.ConnecticutAntique MachineryAssociationThe burner is designed to burn about two gallonsof oil per hour. Every thing is working fairly well, but it still needs some fine-tuning and boilertesting.Errol GroffHere are some photos of the show, sent in byErrol.Hopefully I correctly matched thedescriptions with the photos. Some enterprising soul decided to section aGravely tractor, instead of restoring it to operatingcondition. [Editor’s note: this looks like one of myelectric trains on steroids.]As briefly mentioned by Fred Jaggi in an earlierarticle, Clark’s Trading Post recently gave theConnecticut Antique Machinery Association a C.H. Brown engine. They’ve reassembled it, as canbe seen here. Doesn’t look like they have thesteam line connected yet!Rollie’s burner in actionRollie Evans photoFinally, Errol’s favorite car is the Crosley. Therewere a few at the show. Here is one of them. I believe my model was actually produced byAMMCO before they sold the production line toRockwell. It differs some from the one shown atthe web site www.lathes.co.uk/ammco/index.html.This one has a v-belt from motor to jack-shaft buta three-level flat pulley from jack to shaper. Yes,it really appears to be original. Someone haspainted the shaper green but the underlying fireengine red shows through in several places onthe shaper and motor mount/spindle.Shaper ColumnKay FisherAMMCO acquisitionI surprised myself by locating a local source of flatbelting. Theirs was identical rubber and canvaslike material but 4 ply. They showed me how toremove one ply to match the existing 3-ply beltand install the toothed hinge connection. In caseanyone wonders, that fourth ply makes it a bit toostiff for this little machine and is marginal forclearance between the large fat flat pulley and themachine parts at that end.I received this acquisition tale from SteveBachanek, in Ontario, Canada.I have been looking for one of these small crittersfor the last two years without having to go to greattravel or shipping costs. Being in Thunder Bay,Ontario (NW shore of L. Superior), we are kind ofisolated from large cities and industrial areaswhere surviving wild shapers roam. The one thing missing other than the belt guardsis any instruction manual. One of the comments on your site referred to thesilliness of anyone being unwilling to travel athousand miles if necessary to get something hereally wants. Hmm. Made me think carefullyabout that.[I sent AMMCO/Rockwell documentation to Steve– KRF]I will make new safety guards. I will also keep intouch as I get it cleaned, reassembled and backin operation. My ship came in - in the form of a 6" AMMCO thatwas being sold off from a retiring machinist in atown only a couple of hundred miles away.Shaper Book ReviewsIt was the smallest item in his shop, which wasset up to repair mining equipment. His smalllathe was a 16 inch South Bend and the large onewas a 24 inch Progressive with a 3 inch hole inthe head stock. They will probably be for sale forsome time to come, given the logistics involved inmoving them any great distance.Steve Bachanek also sent along several bookreviews. As for your shaper reading referencesection, the following books contain shaperinformation of good utility. The first two are of the textbook variety and eachcontains a shaper chapter with useful charts andinstructions. They are likely out of print, but couldbe obtained from the used book resources on theInternet. The shaper was in fine shape as it had retiredfrom its keyway cutting a few years ahead of theowner who subsequently used a milling machine. It was no problem to break it down into threeparts: motor/pulleys, shaper, and shop-madesteel stand. That way, I only got three smallerhernias ?. Well not really - the spouse helpedand I'm going to owe her big time. Seriouslythough, any machine should be disassembled asmuch as possible both for its safety as well asyours. Sermon ends.NEMES GazetteMachine Shop Theory and Practice revisededition (1989) by Fred H. Mine has the crank on a shaft directlyunderneath the unit, requiring a hole in the benchtop, but obviously not needing the miter gears. While the Delta's newer placement of this crank ismore practical, the old style is no big deal tooperate.
