Modern Standard Arabic 3IntroductionModern Standard Arabic (MSA), also known asLiterary or Standard Arabic, is the official languageof an estimated 320 million people in the 22 Arabcountries represented in the Arab League. Arabic isthe fourth most-commonly-spoken language in theworld, and it is one of the six official languages of theUnited Nations.MSA is derived from Classical Arabic, which is thelanguage of the Qur’an (the holy book of Muslims)and other early Islamic literature. Classical Arabic andMSA share almost the same grammar and sentencestructure, as well as much vocabulary. MSA, however,has evolved over time and dropped some of themore archaic words and phrases that are not part ofcontemporary usage and has added new technicaland scholarly vocabulary as the times have changed.Modern Standard Arabic is the written languageused in all Arabic books, newspapers, street signs,magazines, official documents, and business-relatedmaterials. Because all Arab children learn MSA inschool, and because most Arabs have exposurethrough media, print, religious practices, and workrelated or social situations, most educated Arabicspeakers are able to use MSA as a lingua franca tocommunicate, regardless of their nationality or spokennative dialect.
Modern Standard Arabic 3There are two variations of MSA: the writtenand the spoken. Written MSA is largely the samethroughout the Arab world, while the spoken can varybased on geographical location, usage, context, andregional dialect. It should be noted that spoken MSAhas more grammatical license than written MSA, asspeakers tend to drop grammatical endings in theirspeech. In this course, you will sometimes hear theendings and sometimes not. This reflects currentusage, which tends to be variable and particular to thespeaker and / or situation. While MSA has no nativespeakers per se, most educated Arabs can speak,read, and understand MSA.Because MSA is used for writing and in formal orspecific situations, Arabic speakers use their firstlanguage, or native dialect, in most situations whenconversing informally or casually. Often, dependingon the situation, speakers of the same dialect can beheard to switch between MSA and their native tongue,mixing the two languages while speaking. This usageof two different varieties of the same language, usedin different social contexts, is known as diglossia.2
Modern Standard Arabic 3The Arabic AlphabetIf you have done the Reading Lessons in Levels1 and 2, you will be familiar with the Arabic script. Ifthe Arabic alphabet is new to you or you need to refamiliarize yourself with the sounds of the alphabet,you may want to do the Reading Lessons in Levels 1 &2 before proceeding with Level 3.The Arabic alphabet dates back to pre-Islamicperiods and has been adopted as well by neighboringcountries whose language is not Arabic, such as Iran,Afghanistan, and Pakistan.The Arabic writing system is easy to learn andmaster because the Arabic alphabet has a highcorrespondence between sound and symbol. Thismeans that a letter is pronounced almost the same inevery word position.The Arabic alphabet contains 28 letters in additionto the hamza (glottal stop) and two variants of existingletters (alif and taa’). A number of diacritical markscomplement the alphabet. These are signs writtenabove or below the letters; they are listed after thealphabet chart.There are two categories of Arabic letters. The firstcategory contains “one-way connectors” becausethey connect only to the “preceding letters” or letters3
Modern Standard Arabic 3to the right. They do not connect to “following letters”or letters to the left. These are: ا د ز ر ذ و ى ء The remaining letters of the alphabet constitute theletters of the second category. They connect to bothpreceding letters (to the right) and following letters(to the left), hence the term “two-way connectors.”The alphabet contains three long vowels: ا alif – ( ) “aa” as in “dad” و yaa’ – ( “ ) ي e” as in “deed” waaw – ( ) “oo” as in “boot”The latter two function as consonants as well – “w”as in “wet” and “y” as in “yes.” There are three shortcounterparts of these vowels, pronounced about halfas long, represented by diacritical marks: fatHa (َِ ُ Damma ( kasra ()))A tiny circle written above a consonant is calleda sukuun () and it represents the absence of avowel. In addition to these marks, there is a set ofْ4

The short vowelsand their doubled version serve two purposes:(1) accurate pronunciation, and (2) grammaticalmarking, indicating cases and definiteness of thenoun, and moods of the verb.The mark that resembles a tiny “w” is calledshadda (). It signifies a doubled consonant. Forexample, if this mark is placed over the letter “t” insita, the word is pronounced /sit-ta/ rather than/sita/.Its effect on the pronunciation of theconsonant is similar to the “k” in “bookkeeping.”ّA complete listing of the Arabic alphabet has beenincluded in this booklet for your reference. Eachletter has four possible different representations,depending on its position within a word: anindependent form, as well as a beginning, a middle,and an end form. “Initial” means the first letter ofthe word starting from the right; “medial” means allthe letters in the middle; and “final” refers to the lastletter of the word, on the left.5
Modern Standard Arabic 3The Reading LessonsThe Reading Lessons in Modern Standard Arabic 3are designed to give you practice in reading, aswell as increase your vocabulary. You’ll see a widevariety of words and phrases that will help you whentraveling, shopping, or in daily conversation. Thereare twenty Reading Lessons in all. Vowel markers havebeen included to aid you in reading unfamiliar words.Normally, everyday written Arabic will not includethese markers or diacritics, but we have included themhere to give you practice recognizing them and toassist in your reading.As in Modern Standard Arabic 1 and 2, you shouldread aloud, as directed. The process of saying thewords out loud will reinforce and enhance yourlanguage acquisition and will help lodge the sounds ofthe language in your memory.The recorded portion of the reading materials forModern Standard Arabic 3 will be found at the endof the program. You can do the Readings when itis most convenient for you, either with the lessons,or entirely after completing the full 30 lessons. Fullinstructions on how to proceed are in the recording.6
