February 2018GOOD NEWS FROM LUTHER MEMORIALLENTEN CHOICESThis month, we start the church season of Lent. Lent is a time to remember who we are in God, repent (whichsimply means turn around, course correct), and return to our original blessing - the way God created us.I hope you’ll make time to join us in worship on Ash Wednesday, February 14, at 6:30 pm. If you’rewondering about bringing children, consider this: do your children make mistakes? do they need help startingover, remembering they are loved, and being reconciled? I think children do - they need to be with us inworship, and as we find our own way, we model the way of following Christ in front of our children andteenagers. By the teenage and young adult years, as you probably know, our kids watch us as much, or evenmore than, they listen to us.Lent is also a time when many Christians take on an intentional spiritual practice. We may do less of somethingharmful to our spiritual lives (complain less, eat less of a certain food) or we may do something helpful to ourspiritual lives more (pray more, worship more, give more, be more grateful.) As you are considering what yourLenten practice may be, I share this list:One of the best ways to go deep with God is to practice daily prayer. Becausepeople differ, and our lives change, I find that we tend to not do the same thingfor a lifetime, but find new resources and fine tune our practice. Here are a fewoptions for you to try:Paper resources for observing Lent: There are two different daily prayer booklets available in the gatheringarea near the mailboxes.Online resources for observing Lent: If you’re interested in daily medita ons from a pastor/therapist with a focus on spiritual wellness and lifebalance, check out this prac cal site: livingcompass.org/lent.iml - (also an app) . This website also has ainteres ng tool you can use to reflect on what area of life you may wish to focus on, for a season ofrenewal. Have a look at it: h%ps://www.livingcompass.org/assessment-introduc on/ Lutheran World Relief is calling this Lent “a Season of Hope.” They have opportuni es to give, to makethings, and to pray on their website here: h%ps://lwr.org/lent. (Their devo ons seem to be weekly, if youfind that daily is too much for you.) There’s a very cool, very simple, contemporary prayer support you can find online or the app store. Let meknow what you think of it. (Hint: you can turn the sound track on and off.) The URL is www.d365.org/todaysdevo on/ or the app is d365 Daily Devo ons. I have a lot of time in the car, as you know, so I am currently listening to these prayers as Icommute: http://www.pray-as-you-go.org/home/ I like that I can listen to a varietycontinued next page

GOOD NEWS FROM LUTHER MEMORIALPage 2of music and a scripture reading, and ponder wise ques ons leading me into prayer. - Rooted in the Jesuittradi on, with cool Bri sh accents. (I confess, I’m an anglophile.)Are you just star ng to learn to pray? Here are some ps: Choose something that interests you. Choose a me, dayand method that may work for you (print, app, recording). Jesus said “when you pray, go in your closet” and I takethat to mean, find a quiet me and place to pray. And be gentle with yourself: it takes me to develop a dailyhabit, we all miss days and make mistakes, and feel closer or farther from God. So be gentle and persist: I suspectthat’s why Lent lasts 40 days.I hope that many of you will take me to connect with others in worship. One life-changing commitment you couldmake, is to pray with others in weekly worship, as o en as possible. God taught us, “remember the sabbath, andkeep it holy.” Taking a day on the weekend for worship and rest, will change your life.We have several choices for worship on Wednesdays.I hope you’ll live into the season of Lent both alone and with your faith community.Love and prayers, Pastor PaulaAsh WednesdayFebruary 14, 6:30 pm, Luther Memorial ChurchLenten Worship schedule at Luther Memorial5:45 pm, Soup Supper - Starting Feb. 21, first one hosted by the Inreach Committee6:30 pm, Holden Evening Prayer with Pr.
