Today we offer a completeline of products for bothlarge scale and smallhome use in your veryown backyard.A B R I E F H I S TO R YThe idea for Medinastarted back in 1962when Arthur Frankemet James Martin at theFrontier Cafe in Hondo, Texasand they planned to makesome of Mr. Martin’s catalystthat stimulated microbes touse on Mr. Franke’s farmland. His farmland had become socompacted that his FarmallH tractor could no longerplow his fields. After theharvest, and Arthur’s farmland yields were larger, andhis soil was soft under hisfeet, the Medina Companywas created and incorporated. This catalyst or MedinaSoil Activator would laterexpand into a whole line oforganic products for farmingand gardening.ABOUT OUR PRODUCTSPlant productivity is directlyrelated to the activity andlevel of the microorganismsin the soil. Without the armyof microbes, the soil will soonbecome hard and compacted;water and oxygen will not bereadily absorbed; the roots will beunderdeveloped; the plant will bepoorly fed; soon weeds and diseasewill take residence and rob theplant of its good health. Microbes, the invisible caretakers of all crops, are the key to healthy, profitableplant production.Biological activity is the life ofthe soil. Microorganisms are likean army of workers in the soil, feeding the plant, protecting itfrom disease and maintainingthe health and structure of thesoil. The ability of soil to supportand sustain plant life is in directproportion to the abundance andvigor of microorganisms.Over 150 years ago, Justus VonLiebig, know as the architect ofchemical fertilizers, discoveredthat plant productivity increasedwhen chemical compounds ofnitrogen, phosphate and potassiumwere added to the soil. The originalintent of chemical fertilizers wasonly to supplement the soil’s basicorganic matter.Medina products increase theperformance and the quantity ofmicrobes that convert nutrientsinto food for the plant. It loosensand mellows compacted soils. Andit allows more water and oxygento penetrate the soil. Microbesare “nature’s soil managers”.Without an adequate level ofmicrobes in the soil, disease andweeds can overtake otherwisehealthy gardens and flower beds.Compaction and erosion willoccur. Eventually the soil will loseits ability to support useful plantlife, no matter how much fertilizeror organic matter is applied. As microorganisms digestplant residues, they secretepolysaccharides. These compoundshave the unique ability to bothbind and release soil particlesin order to maintain the propersoil structure. Polysaccharideshelp make soil more stable, better“balanced” – preventing soilparticles from compacting andhelping to reduce soil erosion.Medina products will help reducecompaction, make nutrients moreavailable to the soil, balance pH,increase water retention and helpward off weeds and plant diseases.3

The best way to control odors isby controlling the microbial activity andbalance. BOC quickly gets rid of odors bybalancing the microbial activity and keepsthe odors from returning. It contains safebiological activators that supercharge thenaturally occurring biological reductionprocess. BOC changes foul smellinganaerobic decomposition conditions toodorless aerobic conditions. Use BOC tocontrol or manage odors throughout thehouse including the bathroom, kitchen, closets, garage, pet areas, trash pails, fireplace, carpets, sinks, automobiles and anywhere else odor is a problem. It contains biological activators derivedfrom a fermentation process. This increase in the activity and numbers oforganisms can help speed up the digestion of wastes, and release enzymes thatbreak down grease and other complex wastes. Because these wastes are morecompletely digested the need for cleaning and pumping are greatly reducedand so are the odors. Actina helps produce digestive organisms that liquefygrease and waste solids, so they flow easily through the pipes, all the way intodrain fields. 100% natural Will not corrode pipes Will not cause pH problems Odors drastically reduced or eliminatedSeptic Tank Starter Medina septic tank starteris made up of dry bacteria and fungi formulated todigest grease and wastes in the septic system. GARDENING PROGRAMSROSES➎ If roses are bare-rooted, removesawdust or moss and any damagedroots and soak in water for an hourbefore planting. Make a large enoughhole to prevent roots from crowding. After all space is filled in with soil, water it in with Medina Soil Activatorto settle it but do not compact it.➏ Practice preventative maintenance. That is, don’t wait until maintenanceis required, do maintenance as apreventive measure. For example, mulch generously around the baseof the plants. 2-3inches is adequate.Keep the soil moist around the roses;not sloppy wet, but moist. Don letgrass and/or weeds grow up to thebase of the plant➊ Roses have to be planted in fullsun. They can tolerate several hoursof afternoon shade but even withprotection, midsummer blooms willbe inferior.➋ They need good drainage and goodsoil. A good way to do this is to makea raised bed 10 to 15 inches above soillevel, using railroad ties, masonry, orlandscape timbers. Then rototill toa depth of 10 inches and incorporate6 inches of peat moss, 3 or 4 inchesof shredded bark, 3 or 4 inches ofcompost, and 2 inches of washed bricksand. Rototill several times to mix allthe amendments.➐ The more you feed the more they➑bloom. Using Growin Green andHastaGro 6-12-6 on a monthly basisprovides the long-term nutrientsneeded to bloom.Pruning – Established roses should becut back to a third of their height andclear out the inner branches leavinga vase shaped plant. This processshould be done the second week ofFebruary for those of us in Texas, butlate winter is the best and Februarymay not be best for your area. Checkwith local nurseries. Climbing rosesshould be cut back in the last week ofApril or right after their main flush ofspring bloom. Climbers bloom on lastyear’s wood so if you prune too earlyyou will be cutting off this season’sblooms.Treat soil with Medina Soil Activator 2to 3 times each year and mulch the soilaround the plants to keep the soil coolerand moister.➊ Soil Application – Start with 1 ounceof HastaGro Plant 6-12-6, mixed with1 gallon of water and pour around theplant. Add ½ cup of Growin Greenevery other month.➌ Choose varieties that suit yourclimate conditions. Rose varietieshave different requirements for soil, fertilizer, and moisture. Choosinglocally-grown varieties will add toyour success.➋ Foliar Application – Mix ½ ounce ofHastaGro Plant in one gallon of waterand spray the foliage.➍ Space roses adequately to promote➌ Maintenance – Repeat the soilyears of growth. Three feet apartwould be the absolute minimum and4-5 feet would be better. Roses needplenty of air circulation to preventfungal problems. Plant them at thesame depth that they were growingin the container. If you plant themdeeper, it could kill them.application every 2-4 weeks duringblooming season and repeat foliarspray every weekwww.medinaag.com17

GARDENING PROGRAMSWILDFLOWERSThis is a functional total program foreither spring or fall blooming wildflowers. For specific information on which varietiesare best for specific seasons contact yourlocal wild seed retailer. We recommend theWild Seed Farm in Fredericksburg, Texas. They can be contacted on the web at www.wildseedfarms.comWhen starting a wildflower area be sureto pick an area that currently supportsgrowth already, and gets at least 8 hoursof direct sunlight per day. Select a sitethat also gets good drainage. If your siteis covered with non desirable vegetation,we suggest spraying with a post emergentherbicide, or for a natural alternative using20 % vinegar or tilling deep enough tokill the plants in your area. Do this earlyenough in the season to have time to allowweed seeds at the surface to germinate. When new weed seeds have germinated, rake or lightly till the surface to amaximum depth of one inch just beforeplanting your seeds.VEGETABLESmaximum depth of one inch. This shallowdepth will not bring up as many dormantweed seeds in the ground. Apply MedinaGrowin Green Granular fertilizer at arate of 30 lbs per 1,000 sq ft. and waterin using Medina Soil Activator at 1 quartper 1,000 sq. ft. When you are ready toapply your wildflower seeds it is helpfulto mix the seeds into potting soil for evendistribution. Use 1 part seeds to 4 partssoil mix for the mixture. When applyingyour wildflower mix, broadcast half ofyour seed mix the length of your area, then broadcast the remaining mix goingthe width of your area. Lightly press yourseeds into the ground by walking over thearea or rolling it to press the seed downno further than about 1/16th of an inch. Some seeds may still be visible.During establishment period ofgermination the area should be kept moistfor 4 to 6 weeks. When your flowers beginto germinate apply a foliar application ofHastaGro Plant Food 6-12-6 at the rateof 1 quart per 2,500 sq ft. or ½ ounce pergallon of water. After seedlings are 1 or2 inches tall, watering can be graduallyreduced unless plants look stressed.Prior to bl
