WHAT IS KINESIOLOGY TAPEWHAT IS KINESIOLOGY TAPE?The list of SPARTAN TAPE benefits is so extensiveand so varied, it has earned the nickname “magic tape”.Invented in Japan in the 70’s as Kinesiology Tape, thismethod has challenged traditional thinking in thetreatment of injuries, and today kinesiology tape isused by practitioners throughout the world to speedup recovery, treat injuries and improve sportsperformance. It is no wonder that it has become one ofthe most widely-used therapeutic modalities inboth athletic and healthcare settings.The tape’s thin, lightweight material and elastic strengthgives it a similar thickness and flexibility to human skin,enabling it to bind tightly to the body withoutaffecting its range of motion. It can be stretchedto between 30% and 40% of its resting length and itsprescribed wear time is around three to five days.This differs greatly to standard strapping tape,which is wrapped tightly around the problem area forthe purpose of restricting movement and can’t beworn for long periods of time in order to restorecirculation.Additionally, the cotton fibers are water resistant,meaning that kinesiology tape dries quicker and allowsevaporation, so it can be worn in the pool or the showerwithout worrying about it peeling off or reapplying it. 2017 SPARTAN TAPE - All rights Reserved5

HOW DOES IT WORKThe vision behind the Kinesiology taping system was todesign a tape and taping style which would effectivelyprovide support to muscles and reduce pain whilemaintaining a functional range of motion.HOW DOES IT WORK?Once the tape is stretched and placed over the skin, itrecoils slightly creating small folds in the skin which liftand separate the skin slightly from the deeper tissue.This lifting effect decompresses pain receptors, blood,and lymphatic vessels and allows the vessels to open.This prevents muscles from sending pain signals to thebrain, enhances blood flow and movement of lymphaticfluid. 2017 SPARTAN TAPE - All rights Reserved6

HOW TO USE1. Identify muscle areas that aresensitive to pain or fatigued. Forhard to reach areas of the body,it helps if another personapplies SPARTAN TAPE.2. The area of skin should beclean, dry and free of grease inorder to avoid the tape falling offtoo early. It is recommended toclean the skin with a degreasingagent (e.g. alcohol, surgical spirit,etc.) and to shave the skin beforeapplying the SPARTAN TAPE.This way maximum adhesivestrength will be achieved.3. Prepare the strips of the tape by cutting the desired lengthand rounding up the corners as shown in a pictures below: 2017 SPARTAN TAPE - All rights Reserved8

HOW TO USE4. Prepare both anchors. Tape anchors (approximately 1.5 inchesfrom both ends) should never be stretched. Rip the backing ofthe SPARTAN TAPE. Don't worry about ripping the tape, it'sflexible. Peel the backing until you reach second anchor point.5. Depending on theindication,apply the tape with or withoutstretching. It's easy to achievethe desired stretch: Zeropercent means no stretching isapplied. 100% stretch isachieved when you expand thetape fully. Take note of thesetwo points and you can easilyknow where are the otherstretching levels. 2017 SPARTAN TAPE - All rights Reserved9

HOW TO USE6. Apply the tape by layingit evenly from one end tothe other. After applicationpeel away backings of theanchors and apply thosewithout any stretching.Make sure you apply tapewithout wrinkles on thetape or skin, this can causeblisters.7. Rub or apply warmingeffect to the SPARTANTAPE for a short timeactivate the heat-sensitiveadhesive layer.8. To remove the tape it is advisable to remove it in thedirection of hair growth, pulling the skin flat and removing thetape at the slight angle so that the skin is not lifted. It helps tostretch the skin behind the removed tape using your finger.Tip: A gentle method is to soak the tape in an adhesivedissolving agent (olive oil, baby oil) for about 2-5 minutes andremove the tape slowly. 2017 SPARTAN TAPE - All rights Reserved10

ROTATOR CUFFRotator cuff syndrome is a very common shoulder injury.Your shoulder joint is a relatively unstable ball and socketjoint that is moved and controlled by a small group of fourmuscles know as the rotator cuff.Use kinesiology tape to reduce neck pain by relievingpressure off the cervical muscles. GENERAL SHOULDERShoulder pain and injury is common. Your shoulder is themost mobile of all your joints. Just think about how much itcan actually move. The reason for this movement is a verysmall joint contact zone. This essentially means that yourshoulder is quite unstable. That is why your shouldermuscles are so vital to a normally functioning shoulder.Application of SPARTAN TAPE will take some of the loadoff your deltoids. KNEE SUPPORTKnee pain or knee injuries are extremely common, andthere are many causes. It is important to make anaccurate diagnosis of the cause of your knee pain orinjury so that appropriate treatment can be directed atthe cause. Knee pain can arise from soft tissueinjuries, ligament sprains and muscle strains, boneconditions as knee arthritis.Split the tape in two on one end and round the corners.Lay this strip of SPARTAN TAPE as pictured with nostretch (BLACK). ACHILLES TENDONITISMost tendon injuries are the result of gradual wear and tearto the tendon from overuse or aging. Anyone can have atendon injury, but people who make the same motions overand over in their jobs, sports, or daily activities are morelikely to damage a tendon.Application continuous use of kinesiology tape helps to theAchilles heel relieve pressure from this area. STABILIZING SHOULDERShoulder pain and injury is common. Your shoulder is themost mobile of all your joints. In most cases, if you aresuffering shoulder pain it is because your muscles are simplynot strong enough or they are uncoordinated.Limited performance in a number of exercises can be causedby weak or injured muscles. To provide stability to thedeltoid area and offer additional support for the shoulderjoint use kinesiology tape continuously.Apply the first strip of SPARTAN TAPE while holding yourhand in front of the body (PINK). AC JOINTAcromioclavicular (AC) joint injury is a term used to describean injury to the top of the shoulder, where the front of theshoulder blade (acromion) attaches to the collarbone(clavicle).It can be caused by a traumatic event, such as a fall directlyon the outside of the shoulder, or by repetitive overuse. BICEPSThe bicep is a long muscle on your upper arm that acts asa flexor by raising your forearm. In most cases, damage tothe biceps tendon is due to a lifetime of normal activities.As we age, our tendons slowly weaken with everydaywear and tear. This degeneration can be worsened byoveruse — repeating the same shoulder motions again andagain.Application of kinesiology tape will provide support to thebiceps by taking some of the load when lifting objects.Continuous usage of this tape can help stiff muscles “loosenup” even without physical activity.Stretch the bicep by holding the arm out to the side. GENERAL ELBOWElbow pain and injury respond favorably to physiotherapyintervention when early treatment is sought. An accuratediagnosis is vital to the correct management of your elbowpain. Elbow pain can be caused by local muscle, tendon orjoint injury. Alternatively, elbow pain can be referred fromyour neck joints. It's similar to sciatica of the upper limb.To take off the pressure from outside of the elbow joint usethe kinesiology tape. Apply to the affected elbow evenwithout physical activity and use it continuously to promotefaster healing.Extend arm with fingers pointing down. TENNIS ELBOWTennis Elbow is an injury to the muscles that extend thewrist and fingers. The site of injury is typically the lateralepicondyle, a bony bump on the outside of the elbowwhere these muscles attach. Tennis Elbow symptomsthat have lasted more than 6 weeks are considered to besub-acute and beyond three months, as chronic tennis elbow.To take off the pressure from outside of the elbow joint usethe kinesiology tape. Apply to the affected elbow evenwithout physical activity and use it continuously to promotefaster healing.Bend your elbow 90 degrees. WRISTWrist pain or injury is common and can usually be successfullydiagnosed and treated by your physiotherapist. Wrist pain canoccur as a result of sports injuries, work injuries or simplyeveryday arm use. Wrist pain can be caused by local muscle,tendon or joint injury.In order to reduce pain and support the wrist in the area - usekinesiology tape. It is recommended to apply tape beforephysical activity if you have a history of wrist pain.Point down with your hand. apply one strip of the spartantape with 80% stretch over wrist pain area (BEIGE). CARPAL TUNNELCarpal tunnel syndrome is a painful disorder of the handcaused by pressure on your median nerve as it runs throughthe carpal tunnel of the wrist. Symptoms include numbness,pins and needles, and pain (particularly at night). Anythingthat causes swelling in the wrist can cause carpal tunnelsyndrome, including repetitive hand movements, pregnancyand arthritis.To reduce the pressure on your wrist use the kinesiology tapecontinuously. It will also provide more power and strength bystabilizing the muscles and reduce the pressure of carpaltunnel causing swelling and pain.Point your hand as shown and apply a long strip of SPARTANTAPE with no stretch (BLUE). ABDOMINALSThe core chain is made up mostly of the muscles thatcomprise your abdomen and your lower back. These musclesact to stabilize the boy and provide support duringmovement and changes in posture. A strong core equates toimproved balance and better strength gains.To provide stability and support to the muscles and spineapply kinesiology tape. This It is advisable to use tape in bothstatic or dynamic activities, such as prolonged standing,pulling movements, squats, or even picking up objects fromthe floor.Lean back to stretch the abdominal muscles. GROINGroin pain is a common sporting injury in high speed running,change of direction or jumping and landing sports. HAMSTRINGSPoor form, inadequate training, and sudden intenseactivity can cause muscle tears, which lead to inflammationand pain. Hamstring injuries can be very painful, so it isimportant to properly train and warm‐up for any physicalactivity.To reduce pain by taking off some of the tension from themuscles use kinesiology tape. QUADA quadriceps is a group of 4 large muscles forming the front ofthe thigh that acts as hip flexors and extensors of the leg atthe knee joint. Common causes of quad pain are se,involving jumping, sprinting and running can cause microtears in the muscles, which can cause pain and tenderness.To reduce pain and discomfort by relieving pressure from thequadricep muscles use SPARTAN TAPE. CALFCalf pain is a common occurrence in sports that includerunning, jumping, hopping and landing activities. Your calfmuscle group essentially consists of two muscles(gastrocnemius and soleus) that attach to your Achillestendon. Calf injuries can occur to both muscle and tendonstructures.To reduce pain and discomfort by relieving pressure from thecalf muscle use kinesiology tape. The increased circulation alsohelps reduce the pain and promotes faster recovery byapplying tape continuously.Stretch the calf and apply one strip of the SPARTAN TAPE onthe inside side of your leg with 25% stretch as pictured(PINK). SHIN SPLINTSShin splints are caused by overstraining of your muscleswhere they attach to your shin.The most common cause isoveruse or overtraining associated with poor foot and legbiomechanics. Shin splints can be caused by a number offactors which are mainly biomechanical (abnormal movementpatterns) and errors in training.To reduce pain and discomfort by relieving pressure from thecalf muscle use kinesiology tape. The increased circulationalso helps reduce the pain and promotes faster recovery byapplying tape continuously.Bend leg at a 45-degree angle and point toes away from theshin. Tape up shin is of pain with the long strip of SPARTANTAPE with 50% stretch (BLUE). Apply two strips of the tape:one above and one below the point of pain with 80% stretch(BEIGE).Reminders:1. ANKLE STABILITYAnkle injuries are extremely common. The most commonankle injury is a sprained ankle, but ankle pain can havenumerous sources. Something as simple as walking on anuneven footpath can cause a rolled ankle, resulting in anankle sprain. Ankle injuries can potentially occur at any age.Application of SPARTAN kinesiology tape addresses the issueof ankle stability by providing additional support to yourankle joint. Continuous application of this tape will giveyou confidence during the activity.Position your ankle at 90 degrees. Tape down your outerankle across the heel with 50% stretch (BLACK 1, 2). Applythe second strip of the SPARTAN TAPE from the inside of thefoot and loop around the heel, finishing on the bottom ofyour foot with 50% stretch (PINK 1, 2). Finish taping with thethird strip of SPARTAN TAPE starting from outside of thefoot and looping around the heel to finish on the bottom ofyour foot again with 50% stretch (BEIGE 3, 4).1324Reminders:1. PLANTAR FASCIITISYour plantar fascia is a thick fibrous band of connectivetissue originating on the bottom surface of the calcaneus(heel bone) and extending along the sole of the foottowards the toes. Your plantar fascia acts as a passivelimitation to the over flattening of you arch. When yourplantar fascia develops micro tears or becomes inflamed itis known as plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is most oftenassociated with impact and running sports, especially thosethat involve toe running rather than heel running styles.To relieve pressure for plantar fascia use kinesiology tape. Itcan also provide support to the heel, so it is highlyrecommended to apply tape even when not engaging inany physical activity.Point toes up toward shin. lay down a strip of the SPARTANTAPE along the bottom of foot and up back of heel asshown with 50% stretch (BLUE). SWELLING / BRUISES / EDEMALYMPHEDEMASPARTAN TAPE will help you to reduce swelling and bruisingby lifting the skin away from the swollen tissue below.Basically, the kinesiology tape is rich of elasticised propertieswhitch creates a sub-dermal vacuum that assists yourlymphatic and venous drainage systems to work moreefficiently. It increases circulation also reduces inflammation,pressure and pain and promotes faster recovery.You can partially replicate this holding your skin and lightlypulling together your fingers. HOW TO REMOVEHOW TO REMOVE SPARTAN TAPEPlease be careful when removing the tape, don’tjust rip the tape off!First of all, make sure you are removing the tape in the samedirection as the growth of the hair underneath it.Start slowly, folding the corners of the edge back gradually,and ensuring that you are sliding the removed tape on thestill applied tape, as opposed to pulling the tape away.As you’re peeling off the tape, hold your skin down withyour other hand and either tap it or pull it gently in theopposite direction of the tape. This helps the skin and thetape to separate more efficiently but with no discomfort.If the tape has been applied over a particularly hairy part ofthe body, it helps to press down on the tape as you arepeeling it off, as the pressure helps avoid further pain.However, It’s wise to tape on a shaved the area, keep this inmind for future tapings.TIP: Apply oil directly onto the tape, rub it in and wait foraround 5 to 10 minutes before removing it slowly.
