Introduction Academic advisors, faculty, staff and studentsrelate and access the world through technology.Technology provides both faculty and academicadvisors a tool for uncovering student data suchas academic progress. Hence, technology hasbecome the center of attention as we work toassist students achieve academic success. Toeffectively advise college students, it is imperativethat we seek to create and engage students in adialogue that incorporates and supports thetechnological resources utilized at oureducational institutions.

Learning Objectives Understand the idea and significance oftechnology in advising college students. Explore how dialogue mediates the interfacebetween technology and academicadvisement. Create a learning environment whichpromotes an ongoing conversation on theevolving role of technology in advising.

Technology & Academic Advising What is technology? What is academic advising? Why is technology so important foracademic advising today?

Technology Difficult to define and complex Organization and applicationof scientific knowledge to theachievement and practicalends of human life.

Academic Advising Multiple Definitions A collaborative and developmentalprocess between the advisor and studentaimed at helping students fulfillgraduation requirements. The advisingdialogue may include helping studentsdevelop and improve study and criticalthinking skills and the exploration ofinterests, careers, and goals.

Technology and Change Technological Change is key to adaptingmodern advising practices that lead to: Personal and professional growth foradvisors Enhanced student success practices Policies that serve the mission of thecollege/university and eventually providebetter support for the students.

Advisors are Agents of Change Advisors are on the front lines and becomeintimately aware of the changes that need totake place to quickly incorporate and sustainthe new policy or technological practice. Adopting newer technologies helps keepadvisors aligned with their students as theyembrace new ways of incorporatingtechnologies into their lives.

Student Retention Rate Affected by quantity and quality ofinteractions with peers, faculty and staff Academic Advising is at the core ofinstitutional efforts to educate andsupport students. Building meaningful relationships withstudents is at the heart of studentsuccess.

Increased Enrollment: Impact Difficult to fund face-to-face supportfor every student On average, (per NACADA), U.S.universities had an advisor-tostudent ratio of 1:367. Challenging for one advisor tosuccessfully see 367 studentswithout help from technology.

How Does Technology Help? Identifies Students Who: Have not registered for the next term. Students who are behind on a tuitionbill. Students whose grades have fallenbelow departmental standards Students who are close to graduationand have outstanding requirements

Technology and Outreach Once patterns or trends areidentified, advisors can reach out byphone, in-person meeting or videochat online Use of technology makes it easier totrack a larger amount of studentsand ensure outreach campaigns areinitiated.

Technology and Advising Dialogue Academic advising relationship and dialogueneeds to be balanced with the technologicalresources available. Academic advisors expand their roles asteachers in the academic advising dialogue byintroducing and guiding students on theutilization of technological resources inachieving academic success.

Conclusion? – to be continued Advising technologies need to be constantlyassessed and improved to support studentengagement and utilization of the universityor college resources. Academic advisors are no longer mereschedule builders; instead, they are agents ofchange and teachers as they strive to teachstudents the importance of integratinginstitutional technologies to help meet theiracademic, personal and career goals.
