PROJECT MANAGEMENTHOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?On large-scale projects, we provide a completeturnkey management service, where our highlyexperienced project managers ensure the work iswell co-ordinated throughout the manufacturingand on-site installation process.From approval of the drawings to the finishedstructure usually takes around six weeks. CARR BANK MEMORIAL PARK, MansfieldBANDSTANDSClient: Mansfield District CouncilMansfield District Council asked us to design and manufacturethe bespoke Edwardian-style structure, which complements a warmemorial at the historic park.We created 3D visuals and CAD drawings of the proposedoctagonal bandstand to show the council exactly what would bemanufactured. Proposals included the structure’s bespoke castaluminium balustrades, based on old archive photographs of thepark, and its two-tier roof with a zinc-finish roofing sheet andintricate metalwork.Our team battled the elements to install the bandstand in thecentre of the park during the cold winter months at the start of2012. The eight-sided frame was erected and the roof was thenlowered on to it, with its solid oak boarded ceiling sitting ateaves height. This was fitted with integral vandal-proof lighting,innovative concealed water run-offs and power outlets.The park now enjoys an impressive bandstand measuring 9.0metres in diameter by 8.5 metres in height.We also made and supplied 20 cast iron park benches tocomplement the bandstand.BANDSTANDSThe bandstand was fabricated to the highest specification inour well-equipped workshops near Halifax, in West Yorkshire,using prime quality structural steel with cast aluminium supportcolumns, pedestals, ornate floral capitals and spandrel brackets.A zinc finish curved roofing sheet was fitted over a steel skeletalframework with intricate metalwork. PAULTONS FAMILY THEME PARK, The New ForestGAZEBOSSECTIONClient: Paultons Park, The New ForestPaultons Park, the family theme park set in the NewForest, has over 70 rides and attractions set in 140acres of parkland, and is famous as the home of PeppaPig World.The park’s latest addition of an impressive JapaneseGarden features a magnificent themed Japanese-stylepagoda, supplied by Andy Thornton.The pagoda stands an impressive 5.45 metres in heightand 5.0 metres in diameter. It features steel supportcolumns and railing panels with one open side foraccess. The main feature is the curved two-tier roofstructure, incorporating tile-effect metal roof panels withsix symbolic carved Japanese ‘Shachihoko’ figures tothe lower tier.GAZEBOSWe also supplied the iconic red arched Moon Gate,which represents the moon rising in the sky. Bothstructures were pre-fabricated in our Elland workshops,before being dismantled for powder coating andinstallation.12This is not the first time Paultons Park have commissionedspecialist architectural metalwork from Andy Thornton.In 2014 we manufactured and installed a magnificentVictorian-style bandstand to complement the antiquedouble-decker fairground carousel ride, both set in thebeautiful period-themed garden of the park. At 6.5metres in diameter and 6.3 metres tall, this imposinghexagonal structure was built using components fromour popular Victorian colonnade system.The bandstand features decorative cast balustradepanels, spandrels and timber handrails with one openside for access. The ornate columns, with detailedcapitals, have structural steel cores to hold the elaborateroof structure.The eye-catching, two-tier curved roof was fabricatedin steel and clad in a sheet aluminum skin up to aconvex cupola with decorative capping and animpressive weather vane. The roof was finished in aresilient dark green powder coat, with the mainstructure in satin black.

The tight deadline wasrequired as a wedding ceremony using the structure had beenbooked in for the start of summer.GAZEBOSThis beautiful wedding gazebo in the heart of the LakeDistrict comprises six elaborate cast aluminium columns withinterconnecting spandrels, decorative balustrade panels andhardwood handrail. The eye-catching two-tier curved roofstructure features a convex cupola with central weather vane.Internally there is a recessed flat ceiling which incorporatesillumination. HAMMERSMITH RAM, Hammersmith, LondonSHELTERSClient: Young & Co’s Brewery plcDesigners: Harrison DesignMain Contractor: Cummins & Pope LtdHammersmith Ram is a vibrant pub situated in the heart of the localcommunity, just a short walk from iconic theatres the Lyric and theApollo, boasting a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. Pub retailer Young’sidentified the need for a glazed canopy to provide all-year-roundshelter for those customers wishing to eat, drink and socialise outside.The roof and gable is glazed in 6 mm thick toughened safety glass,retained in our two-part patent-glazing system. Vertical glazing panelsin 10 mm safety glass create a subtle, transparent wall of protectionfrom the elements, not detracting from the appearance of the existingbuilding. The structure was then finished in a durable gloss blackpolyester powder coat.We were specified by Harrison Design to manufacture and install theimpressive L-shaped canopy, which measures 6.7 metres long by 4.1metres, to provide cover for the busy street-side seating area. Wethen worked closely with main contractor Cummins & Pope Ltd on itsinstallation.SHELTERSThe canopy’s timeless design was based on our best-sellingCircle colonnade system and features Seaton decorative columns, withan ornate frieze panel running across the front of the structure.A rainwater gutter around the perimeter of the shelter neatly creates awater run-off, filtering the rainwater underground.01422 376000 ANDYTHORNTON.COM17

EXMOUTH COMMUNITY COLLEGESECTIONSHELTERSClient: Exmouth Community CollegeContract Caterers: Innovate ServicesArchitect: TFQ ArchitectsFor Exmouth Community College, we manufactured and installedtwo major freestanding outdoor structures, creating yearround alfresco dining areas for the pupils. The first structure, anenormous 20 metres 14 metres, was installed in 2009 andproved so popular with students that we were invited to providean additional shelter, which features a lock-up servery kiosk.Working to initial concept drawings supplied by the architectsand liaising closely with contract caterers Innovate Services,we proposed using columns and frieze panels from our popularCircle colonnade system. The framework was fabricated in mildsteel section and as well as the attractive decorative castingsbelow the guttering, includes an elaborate double-pitched roof,all painted in a black semi-gloss polyester powder coat paintfinish. Glazing is in 6 mm toughened safety glass.SHELTERSThe second structure, a 20 metre 7 metre rectangular shelterwith single-pitch roof manufactured using the same decorativedetail, was installed in 2012 and includes a kiosk to one end,incorporating roller shutter doors.2001422 376000 ANDYTHORNTON.COM

HAVERTHWAITE RAILWAY STATION,Nr Ulverston, CumbriaClient: Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway Co. LtdArchitect: Chris Bugler Architects LtdSECTIONPLATFORMCANOPIESWe manufactured and installed this impressivenew entrance canopy at the historicHaverthwaite railway station, in the picturesqueLeven valley at the southern end of LakeWindermere. The structure was designed to besympathetic to the existing building and extendthe amenities of the business, including a ticketoffice, gift shop and restaurant. It also providesshelter for passengers making their way to andfrom the trains.The station now features a canopy comprisingof cast aluminium railway style columns, mildsteel sections and bespoke teardrop friezes, allfinished in a black powder-coated finish. Theroof comprises 6 mm toughened glass panels.The project took three months to complete fromstart to finish, with the canopy in place for thestart of the tourist season. We are delightedto have played such an important role in thedevelopment and restoration of the station,which was constructed in 1869.24

We incorporated our standard Seatoncolumns and Railway spandrels to blendwith the architectural elements of the originalcanopy.PLATFORM CANOPIESThe main structure was fabricated in mild steeland incorporated 6 mm clear toughened glasspanels retained in our two-part patent glazingsystem. THE OLD STATION HOUSE, Irlam, Nr. ManchesterAn impressive new entrance canopy played an important role inthe astonishing transformation of this once-derelict station house,dating from 1893. BANNY’S RESTAURANT, Boundary Mill, ColneCOVEREDWALKWAYSClient: Boundary Mill StoresWith five outlets across the UK, Boundary Mill Stores is one of the UK’s largestmill store retailers, offering quality womenswear, menswear and homeware brandnames at huge discounts. With free parking and a choice of onsite eateries,everything is under one roof.The structure combines our Seaton steel and cast-iron support column betweenbespoke decorative cast aluminium frieze panels, below rectangular hollowsection steel and ogee profile guttering. The roof is glazed in 6 mm toughenedglass panels. The whole structure is finished in a dark blue weather-resistantpowder coating.01422 376000 ANDYTHORNTON.COMCOVERED WALKWAYSFor the flagship store in Colne, Lancashire, we were commissioned to manufactureand install the impressive covered walkway/veranda that winds around theperimeter of Banny’s Restaurant, the famous 280-seater eatery serving that classicBritish favourite, fish & chips. At over 3 metres in depth it not only provides anunbroken walkway from the store to the main entrance of the restaurant, it alsoprovides shelter for outside dining.29

This 4 star hotel,set in a scenic setting of rolling parkland,includes its very own lake, ancient woodlandand a championship golf course.Working closely with contractor GB Windowsand to drawings supplied by architects MRHart & Associates, the design was based onour popular Circle colonnade system. Theeye-catching detail is provided by a decorativefrieze running the length of the structure. The hotel’s original entrance onthe side of the Grade ll listed property has beenfully restored, with the new canopy leadingguests into the main reception area.At 9.5 metres in length, the structure has beenmanufactured in steel section, comprisingtapered support columns, three-sided gutterassembly and a radiused roof with 8mm thickopaque polycarbonate infill panels.External illumination has been provided byLED strips mounted in channel, complete withdiffuser and the metalwork has been finished ina durable polyester powder coat finish in glossblack, to complement the existing verandas oneither side.“Andy Thornton have produced an architecturally stunning floating canopyfor The Bloomsbury, providing exemplary service and expertise throughout.”34Daniel Healey, Deputy General Manager, The Bloomsbury

SMITH & WOLLENSKY, LondonENTRANCECANOPIESWhen quintessential American steakhouseexperience Smith & Wollensky opened itsfirst venue outside the US, in the West End ofLondon, they turned to Andy Thornton to supplythis impressive curved entrance canopy. Theiconic building needed a decorative structurein keeping with its stunning architecture, andthis 3 metre wide by 2 metre deep slopingcantilevered canopy certainly achieved that.The structure, in mild steel section, wasfabricated in our workshops in West Yorkshireand finished in a hard-wearing polyesterpowder coat before being installed by our sitefixing team.01422 376000 ANDYTHORNTON.COMENTRANCE CANOPIESAn elegant circle frieze to the perimeter of theframe is supported on two curved spandrelswith load-bearing tie bars above. The structureis glazed in 10 mm thick toughened safetyglass, retained in our two-part patent-glazingsystem. It also incorporates a structural gutter tothe abutment of the building.35

RUBENS AT THE PALACE, LondonClient: Red Carnation HotelsArchitect: LCE ArchitectsSECTIONENTRANCECANOPIESLocated on Buckingham Palace Road, onlyyards from the palace and just a short walkfrom Westminster Abbey, the majestic hotel,built in 1911, needed a grand entrance tomatch its 4 star luxury status.The design brief was simply to replace theexisting tired and rather incongruous 1960sstructure with a canopy more befitting theperiod of the building and its fine façade.The complete structure was fabricated in theAndy Thornton workshops in West Yorkshire,before being dismantled and transported to sitefor installation. The cantilevered canopy wassecured to a concealed beam and hung fromtwo wall-mounted tension rods.Due to the hotel’s location, the canopy had tobe installed with the least disruption to guests,tourists and traffic. Despite having to workbehind a restrictive wooden hoarding, thefixing team managed to install the completestructure within the two week allocation.36

SYCAMORE COURTWeybridge, SurreyClient: Bloor Homes Ltd (Southern)VERANDASSECTIONSycamore Court is an exclusive development,comprising of seven executive homes andfive luxury apartments. Around this apartmentcomplex, we were commissioned to build andinstall decorative colonnades to the groundfloor. These included columns and spandrelsto the pitched-roofed main entrance, a cornerveranda feature to one corner and a patiofrontage.Our popular Circle colonnade system was usedthroughout, a timeless design whichworks well with most styles of architecture.Painted in white, the colonnades contrastagainst the heritage brickwork and slateroof, whilst blending in well with the whiteclapperboard cladding.38

VERANDASPRIVATE RESIDENCE, South coast of EnglandArchitects: TMV Architects01422 376000 ANDYTHORNTON.COMWorking closely with the client and to drawings produced by the architect, this bespokepoolside veranda was manufactured using our popular Circle colonnade system. Finished inan appealing cream powder coat, the client was delighted with the final look.39

VERANDASPRIVATE RESIDENCE, Near YorkBuilding Contractor: T. Howell & Sons LtdThe design of this 27-metre-long structure was based on ourpopular Victorian colonnade system. We manufactured thecomplete veranda in our workshops prior to installation on siteon concrete pads and paved terracing provided by T.Howell.01422 376000 ANDYTHORNTON.COMEight structural steel columns incorporate decorative cast capitalsand fluted bases, which have been combined with intricatelycast aluminium spandrel brackets to add more than a touch ofelegance to the large veranda.The roof, which projects 3.7 metres from the house facade,features clear toughened safety glass retained in our twopart patent-glazing system. Rain water from the roof cleverlydischarges down the columns via the extruded aluminiumguttering. The metalwork has been pre-sprayed in an oysterwhite powder coat finish to provide a long-lasting paint finish.VERANDASThis attractive Victorian-style glazed veranda was installed onthe front elevation of a country manor house to the north of York.The structure provides an extensive terrace shelter overlookingthe Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty inNorth Yorkshire, whilst totally transforming the appearance ofthe building.41

VerandasMARSTON TRUSSELL HALL, NorthamptonshireWe manufactured this 7.3 metre veranda for the extension to this Grade II listed hall.43

27 ESPLANADE, St Helier, JerseyClient: Dandara Jersey LimitedArchitects: Axis Mason27 Esplanade is a prestigious commercial property on theshore-front in St Helier, Jersey, by developer Dandara, one ofthe UK’s largest independent property companies. Almost halfthe office space forms the new headquarters for JTC, the globalequity fund administrators.Andy Thornton Ltd was approached by Dandara’s quantitysurveyor Giles McDermott to quote to supply the sixth-floorexternal terrace balustrade, two interior staircase handrailsand a rear entrance balustrade, all designed by the architectsAxis Mason. The stylish 25-metre long terrace balustradewas fabricated in mirror-finish 316 grade stainless steel in ourworkshops in Elland. The 1100 mm tall balustrade with a 0.74kN/metre loading, features decorative laser-cut fins, betweenlaminated toughened glass with polished edges and a 51 mmhandrail. The balustrade was bolted into the floor and sidesbefore cladding.01422 376000 ANDYTHORNTON.COMThe two internal six-storey staircase handrails feature 42 mmhandrail and glazed balustrades in satin finish 304 gradestainless steel, combining 51 mm structural posts and 10 mmtoughened glass panels. The handrail was constructed usingflush elbows, bends and glass clamps from the Andy Thorntonproduct range, plus specially manufactured side-mountings foradditional strength.Finally, for the rear external entrance, we provided a 6-metredemountable stainless steel glazed balustrade.STAIRS, HANDRAILS & BALUSTRADESSTAIRS,HANDRAILS &BALUSTRADES45

STAIRS,SECTIONHANDRAILS &BALUSTRADESBELVEDERE, St Saviour, JerseyClient: Dandara GroupSTAIRS, HANDRAILS & BALUSTRADESBelvedere is a mixed residential development of traditional familyhomes and apartments by award-winning property companyDandara, set among the rolling fields of St Saviour, Jersey.Situated on the site of the old Jersey Dairy, the homes provide theperfect option for countryside living with easy access to all partsof the island.46We have worked closely with Dandara since commencementof the development in 2011, to provide decorative architecturalmetalwork through the various phases of the development. Weprovided two pairs of impressive 3.5-metre-tall arched entrancegates for the two main entrances to the scheme. Many incorporatea ‘Juliette’ balcony or shared balcony balustrade overlooking thegreen open spaces and communal gardens. We fabricated thesein mild steel, with 50 50 support posts, cast ball finials and flatbar handrails. It was allmanufactured in mild steel with intermittent floor-fixed 50 50rolled hollow section posts and 40 10 convex handrails. It wasfinished in gloss black polyester powder-coat.Inside the community centre, we supplied the internal stairhandrail and balustrade system, in 304 grade stainless steel witha satin brushed finish. This features 50 mm diameter posts withfixing plates for face-mounting direct to the concrete stair risers,with glass clamps and 50 mm handrail.
