ANote from the Plavwright-in-ResidenceWelcome to the Seventh Biennial Festival of ew American Plays. Weare proud to present exciting new works by our guest playwrights BarbaraLebow and James McLure. The plays you are about to see performedare presented as "staged readings." Professional theatres and producersuse such readings in order to involve audiences and actors in the processof new play development. Plays are meant to be performed, and the bestway to see whether a new play works is to present it in front of a liveaudience. This is where you come in-and we thank you for being here! Each play in the festival has had only ten rehearsals. The actors willbe performing with the script in their hands, relying on their talent andtraining to interpret the text without the advantage of a long rehearsalprocess. These readings have been designed to concentrate on the wordsof the playwrights and the talents of our young performers and designers. We have included a minimal amount of scenery, costumes and lights togive the writers what they envisioned in their scripts. We are attemptingto present the world of the playas closely as possible to what the authorhas written. The results may be a different type of theatre from what youare accustomed to seeing. Our hope is that you will find this event bothadventurous and exciting. One of my goals when we started the festival in 1998 was to bringestablished writers to our campus to work with our students. We havealways asked our invited playwrights to send us any script they wished tohear and, in return, we have promised to give them our best interpretationof the text. Another goal has been to give audiences in Nacogdoches theunique opportunity to see new plays while they are being created. Ourfirst six festivals were great successes. Now with this seventh festival,I hope the community will once again enjoy this celebration of "newtheatre in the making."I wish to thank the faculty and staff of the School of Theatre. My specialthanks to Professor Scott Shattuck, for his guidance and for directingone of the evenings, and to Juanita Finkenberg for her help with themovement. I commend the cast, designers and crew for the work they havedone. Watching these young theatre artists learn and grow is the primaryreason we are here. Finally, to Ms. Lebow and Mr. McLure-thank youfor trusting us with your plays and for coming to visit our campus. Youinspire us with your words and astound us with your generosity. Wededicate this evening to you.Jack HeifnerPlaywright-I n-Residence
