TempleBeth OrHouse ofLightDearest congregation,I am sitting in my office. It is asunny afternoon. I am the onlyperson in the building. Thedehumidifier is handling whatevermoisture might be in the air. All isquiet! This is my reality on Monday. All other days I work from home. Iam growing accustomed to the flowof my week. I am, nonetheless, unsettled by it. I imagine many ofus, if not all, share this same feeling. It is, however, not without benefit –this aloneness. Friends are calledmore often. My calls are longer, more patient. I have no where torush off too; no excuse not to bepatient, to ask more questions, tolaugh over present activities andmemories. As difficult as itsometimes is, I am practicing beingin the moment.Judaism is a social religion. Ourholidays demand community. Iknow we will gather, together, again.I know that with warmer weather wewant to be out and about. As I ridemy bicycle through theneighborhood, I notice small groupssocializing – at a proper and safeApril/May 2020 * Nisan/Iyyar/Sivan 5780distance. We must continue toguard our health and that of others. We are fortunate to part of awonderful congregation. I am indeed I hope we all are - thankfulfor the efforts of Susan Finkelstein,Sandy Lynne Stevens, MarleneBeringer, Kelly Capouya, andHarriette Dorosin for making masksfor all of us, and to Mae and ElliotCohen, and Karen Goldstein fordelivering these life-protecting gifts. When I chose to apply to TempleBeth Or, I did so because of how thecongregation took ownership afterElliot’s death. It demonstrated thecharacter and dedication of eachindividual member. It is no less truetoday. We are each other’s support. We are lucky beyond measure. Please, if you need assistance of anykind during this time, call me, callGina. We will always do our best tocare for you, for we love you. Some time ago I received an articlefrom the New York Times detailinghow performing arts venues andmuseum around the world aresharing their work digitally. Asdescribed, “Performances are beinglive-streamed, archival material isbeing resurface and social mediaplatforms like Instagram, YouTubeand Facebook are serving asmakeshift stages, concert halls andgallery spaces.” To access a list ofthese (and additions) go to: https://www.nytimes,com/2020/03/20/arts/ANNUAL MEETING htmlWe may beclosing ourselvesin physically, butwe need not closeourselves off fromthe world of arts.Enjoy!During this time, if able, pleaseconsider donating to localorganizations that are helping othercitizens of our city. Tzedakah is aduty. Times of crisis magnify thisfor us. I, and the Social ConcernsCommittee, have made contributionsto a westside church which isproviding food for those in desperateneed. I am planning on donatingtoward rent subvention as well. Ourfaith demands that we act to care forthe stranger, those who we do not, during the course of our day, noticeor think of.I am grateful for the leadership of ourTemple Board during this time, forGina and Marlon, for Turia, and forevery congregant who has found, intheir own manner, a way to stepforward. We are all embraced.B’rav bracha – withabundant blessing,Rabbi LooperSCAM ALERTTemple Beth Or’s Annual Meeting scheduledfor 5/21/2020 has been postponed as aprecaution during the current Covid-19 crisis.Emails are still circulating our community from Rabbi Looperthat request your help. We were not able to have our traditional Passover Sederat the Temple, and many of us were unable to enjoy our traditionallarge family gathering to celebrate Passover. As the coronavirusreality evolves and forces changes in our lives in various ways, Ihope that everyone in our community is managing through thisdifficult period in good health, and we all emerge full of vitalityand gratitude. We can’t predict what the next few weeks will bring, so we will continueto suspend any and all group activities at the Temple until we have theappropriate guidance from our public health leaders to make informeddecisions. Therefore, our Annual Meeting scheduled for Thursday, May21 will be postponed until a later date so that we can host this importantmeeting of our membership in a safe and healthy manner. TempleLeadership will ensure that we provide everyone with adequatenotification (by both email and regular mail) of future events once thedecision has been made to open our facility. We will also make everyoneaware of the health and safety protocols that will be implemented and ineffect.Staying connected has never been more important at this time ofdisruption, distancing and uncertainty. Please do not hesitate to contactthe Temple Office or a lay leader should the need arise as we cope withthis crisis.Thank you for your continued support of Temple Beth Or.Sincerely,Morris E.
