WSET Level 4 Diploma in Winesprogramme to start in Germany in 2021The Austrian Wine Academy is a non-profit organization and the largest wine educationinstitution in Europe. It has been active particularly in German-speaking Europe since theearly 1990s and these countries also include some of the most beautiful wine growingareas in the world: the river valleys of Rheingau, Mosel, Wachau, Kamptal or the lakeregions of Burgenland and Zurich, mountainous Südtirol (Alto Adige) and Graubünden(Grisons), and vineyards stretching into bordering regions like Sopron, Valais and Ticino.The Academy has cooperated with WSET in London for more than 25 years, offering theprestigious WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines and these world-class wine regions will hosta WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines programme to be held in the wine growing areas ofGermany, Austria, Switzerland and Alto Adige.Leading institutions in the world of wine such as Geisenheim University and ZurichUniversity in Wädenswil have joined forces with Austrian Wine Academy and supportthis programme.Diploma students are invited as VIP guests to highly prestigious wine events and exclusivetastings with celebrity winemakers. Weinakademie ÖsterreichThe Weinakademie Österreich (Austrian Wine Academy) was established in Rust in1991 as a training centre for private wine lovers and professionals alike. The AustrianWine Academy is a non-profit institution and endorses the philosophy that the morethe society develops wine knowledge and culture, the more likely it is that it willrespect and consume high-quality wines. More than 15,000 wine enthusiasts attendseminars annually. Already in 2001 the Academy formed a partnership with theGeisenheim University in Rheingau. A partnership with Zurich University, CampusWädenswil in Switzerland followed in 2007. Other course centres are located in AltoAdige/Südtirol and Florence.Course venuesThis specific WSET Level 4 Diploma will take place in four different wine growingareas of Central Europe. The Geisenheim University in the Rheingau wine region inGermany, the Weinakademie Campus in Rust, a small but famous wine town in theBurgenland wine region of Austria, the Zurich University, Campus Wädenswil closeto Zurich located at the lake of Zurich as well as the Kloster Neustift in Brixen/AltoAdige are the course venues for this Diploma format.GeisenheimRustWädenswilBrixen4

WSET Diploma in Wines Rheingau / Burgenland / Alto Adige /Zurich 2021/22The WSET Diploma in Wines is a globally recognized professional qualification inthe international wine trade andalso recommended by the Instituteof Masters of Wine as preparationfor entrance in the Masters ofWine (MW) study programme. Thesyllabus covers the wine countries ofthe world and the most importantwines. This qualification offered by theBritish Wine and Spirit Education Trust(WSET) is established in more than 20countries from - London to New York, from Oslo to Tokyo.This particular Diploma course isspecial in many respects. Block sessionswill be held in all these wine countriesand there will be an additional emphasison their wine growing regions throughwine study trips and tastings. It offersa great opportunity to learn aboutinternational wines combined withpractical first-hand experience in theareas of viticulture and winemaking.Another difference to WSET Diploma courses in other countries is the fact thatthe graduates of this course are awarded the prestigious title “Weinakademiker”.Upon completion of a thesis and aviva-voce exam, successful graduatesare requested to sign a code ofconduct and join the internationalalumni association with more than 900graduates from 43 different countries.5

CourseThe course will start with the first blocksessions for D 1 and D 2 in Septemberand November 2021 at the Campusof Geisenheim University, the leadinguniversity in the area of viticulture andvinification. The September session willinclude a study trip to wine regionsof Germany as well as a regional VDPtasting.During the November session in theRheingau the first exam (D 1) willtake place and Diploma studentshave the opportunity to visit otherRheingau wineries and attend theannual Weinakademiker graduationceremony at Schloss Vollrads.These sessions will be followed byD 3 in spring 2022, where studentswill have the possibility to explore thewines and wine regions of Austria, AltoAdige and Switzerland. The first blocksession of D 3 will take place in theunique and picturesque environmentof Austrian Wine Academy’s campusin Rust surrounded by renownedwineries. A study trip will focus oninternational and indigenous varieties as well as noble sweet wines in the manifoldwine growing regions of Austria.6

sessionsThe second block session of D 3 willbe held at the Kloster Neustift in AltoAdige, surrounded by vineyards, themountains and a great monasterialambience. On a study trip Diplomastudents will also get to know thedifferent wine styles of Alto Adige,from fresh Alpine white wines in thenorth to fruity and elegant red winesin the south.The third D 3 block session will takeplace at the Zurich University, CampusWädenswil close to Zurich located atthe Lake Zurich. This session will alsoinclude a visting programme and guidedtastings. During this block session alsothe Swiss annual Weinakademikergraduation ceremony will take placeat Schloss Au, which gives studentsanother good opportunity to networkwith Swiss Diploma colleagues and Weinakademiker.The final courses D 4 - 7 will be held inearly September 2022 at the AustrianWine Academy‘s campus in Rust.The wine study trips and tastings are included in the course fee,accommodation is not included.7

QualificationThe WSET DIPLOMA IN WINES imparts a broad, up to date knowledge about the wines,fortified wines and wine countries of the world, viticulture and vinification as well asprofessional wine tasting and wine assessment skills.
