Review pertinent material from previous courses including: Physical Assessment,Intravenous Skills, Diagnostic Tests, Vocabulary, Math, Orem’s Self-Care NursingTheory, and Medication Administration.2. Arrive to clinical on time and prepared for your assignment for the day.3. Complete thorough written nursing care plans by designated time.4. Complete Process Recordings each clinical day of the psychiatric portion of the course.5. Submit a Clinical Journal (using a Large Green Book available in the LBCC Bookstore)each Monday while assigned to the psychiatric units beginning the first week of thecourse.6. Maintain appropriate behavior in the clinical setting.7. Achieve an overall grade of 75% or higher in the theory testing by the end of the courseto maintain satisfactory status in the program8. Participate actively in clinical conference discussions.9. Incorporate appropriate terminology in verbal and written communication.10. Assume responsibility for meeting behavioral objectives in the event of absence from theclinical setting.11. Review the basic concepts of the following charting formats: Problem, Intervention,Evaluation (PIE); Data, Action, Response (DAR). LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGEAssociate Degree Nursing ProgramADN 21BL – Mental Health Nursing LabChallenge Policy for Advanced Placement in the ADN ProgramSelf-Learning Module: Complete the self-learning module for the medical/surgical and mentalhealth hospitals by the end of the third week.Independent Project: The student will complete one written Case Study to be assigned by theinstructor. The Case Study must follow written guidelines and is due on Friday of the secondweek of the course.Clinical: The clinical experience is to be individualized to meet the needs of the student. Thestudent is advised to attend orientation days unless he/she works on the assigned unit. Anappointment must be made with the teaching team by Monday of the second week to be tested inthe clinical settings. The student and instructor will plan two or more days on a medical surgicaland an acute psychiatric unit during which the student is to demonstrate his/her capabilities inassessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care of the assigned patients. Clinicalperformance includes:1. Completing the nursing care of two psychiatric patients who have been diagnosed withdepression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or paranoid behavior.2. Assessing psychiatric patient’s behavior according to PTAB format (Perception,Thinking, Affect, Behavior). Completing one Process Recording as directed by theinstructor on assigned patients.3. Completing the nursing care of 3 to 4 medical/surgical patients chosen by the instructor.4. Preparing 21BL nursing care plans and setting short term goals utilizing Orem’s SelfCare conceptual framework and the nursing process within the time allowed.5. Implementing the appropriate nursing responses and interventions.6. Evaluating the responses and nursing interventions attempted.7. Reporting and recording pertinent information using PIE (Problem, Intervention,Evaluation) or DAR (Data, Action, Response) format according to hospital policy.8. Administering medications with 100% accuracy by passing medications to specificpatients or to a team of patients, as assigned by the instructor.9. Completing designated skill testing with 100% accuracy by the end of the second week ofthe course.10

The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program at PRCC is designed to prepare graduates for a challenging and satisfying career as a registered nurse.
