Distinctive Features of the programme and the Student ExperienceThis HNC offers either a one year full time or a two years’ part time programme of study. Thisaffords students a degree of flexibility to take account of work and family commitments.This programme has a broad range; which allows students the opportunity to explore a number ofareas within Health and Social Care and is therefore suited to students (a) have not been involved inrecent academic study and (b) who have not finally decided on their career path.The Social Sciences (e.g. Psychology and Sociology) underpin the wide range of health andsocial care issues which are explored on the programme and links are made with professionalpractice. Current issues e.g. around equality, diversity & rights are examined and how theseimpact on the role of the professional.Over the course of the programme there is a focus on developing the key transferable skillswhich employers are expecting graduates to possess. These include problem solving, decisionmaking, team working, communication skills and knowledge of the sector. These skills arespecifically studied within the Professional Practice module. Students are encouraged toexplore the possibility of taking other CPD courses relevant to their area of interest, e.g. NCFEin Counselling, End of Life Care Training, Mental Health First Aid Training, and British SignLanguage.Work experience is a central part of the programme and there is an expectation that studentswill be either in paid employment or in a volunteering role. This will develop employabilityskills within a work setting and increase opportunities for securing employment upongraduation.Why study at Cornwall College?Cornwall is a beautiful and vibrant part of the country and has a wealth of tourist attractionsincluding the Eden Project, National Trust properties, cliffs and beaches. Progression criteria for final and intermediate awardsApproved “progression route(s)” are those where successful achievement in this programme enablesdirect alignment to join a stage of another programme. This is an approach employed primarily forFoundation Degree students to “top-up” to complete a Bachelor degree, but may be employed forother award types.This is in part an automated admissions criterion and therefore progression may be impacted on byavailability of a position on the progression award; however progression opportunity, if not availablein the first year of application, is guaranteed within 3 years.Progression arrangements with institutions other than Plymouth University carry an increasedelement of risk. It is necessary for the delivering partner institution to obtain formal agreement fromthat institution to guarantee progression for existing students on the programme. For progression toPlymouth University, should there be the need to withdraw the progression route programme(s) theneither this will be delayed to provide progression or appropriate solutions will be found. Thisarrangement is guaranteed for existing students that complete their programme of study with nosuspensions or repeat years and who wish to progress immediately to the University.Upon successful completion of HNC Health Welfare and Social Sciences, students may apply forentry onto the following: BSc (Hons) Health Welfare and Social Sciences (Level 5) at Cornwall College.BA (Hons) Social Work (Level 5) at the University of Plymouth.7.
