SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER May 9, 2021Year B, Revised Common Lectionary With trumpets and the sound of the horn make ajoyful noise before the King, the LORD. Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world andthose who live in it. Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills singtogether for joy at the presence of the LORD, for he is coming tojudge the earth. He will judge the world withrighteousness, and the peoples with equity.1 John 5:1-6 Everyone who believes that Jesus is theChrist has been born of God, and everyone who loves theparent loves the child. By this we know that we love thechildren of God, when we love God and obey hiscommandments. For the love of God is this, that we obeyhis commandments. And his commandments are notburdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers theworld. And this is the victory that conquers the world, ourfaith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one whobelieves that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the onewho came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with thewater only but with the water and the blood. And theSpirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.Holy Spirit, McCauley’s Corner Artspace, 2009.Acts 10:44-48 While Peter was still speaking, the HolySpirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcisedbelievers who had come with Peter were astounded thatthe gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even onthe Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tonguesand extolling God. Then Peter said, "Can anyone withholdthe water for baptizing these people who have receivedthe Holy Spirit just as we have?" So he ordered them tobe baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then theyinvited him to stay for several days.Psalm 98 O sing to the LORD a new song, for he has donemarvelous things. His right hand and his holyarm have gotten him victory. The LORD has made known his victory; he hasrevealed his vindication in the sight of thenations. He has remembered his steadfast love andfaithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends ofthe earth have seen the victory of our God. Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth;break forth into joyous song and sing praises. Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre, with thelyre and the sound of melody.John 15:9-17 As the Father has loved me, so I haveloved you; abide in my love. If you keep mycommandments, you will abide in my love, just as I havekept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.I have said these things to you so that my joy may be inyou, and that your joy may be complete. "This is mycommandment, that you love one another as I haveloved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay downone's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you dowhat I command you. I do not call you servants anylonger, because the servant does not know what themaster is doing; but I have called you friends, because Ihave made known to you everything that I have heardfrom my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you.And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that willlast, so that the Father will give you whatever you askhim in my name. I am giving you these commands so thatyou may love one another. This resource is an offering from The Vanderbilt Divinity Library at:http://lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu.
