MARCHMONTHLY INVESTMENTNEWSLETTER

Market commentary March 2021Amidst volatility, Nifty 50 increased by 1.17% in the month of March in 2021 despite steep risein US bond yields along with rising COVID-19 cases in India as well as globally. Economicactivity continued to remain better than expectation, post unlocking of the economy. ForeignInstitutions (FII) bought Rs.1, 245 crores (approx.) worth of equities in the March month andDomestic Institutions bought Rs.5,204 crores (approx.) worth of equities. On the Fixed income market consolidated with yields easing across the curve post steep rise inFebruary. RBI allowed higher cutoffs in primary auction with lower devolvement. Corporatebonds and State development loans rallied more as spreads compressed on RBI's continuousmessage on accommodative stance on liquidity and muted credit growth. Consumer PriceIndex inflation continues to be below RBI tolerance of 6% even though core inflation inched updue to high fuel prices and supply chain issues along with high commodity prices. 10Y bondclosed at 6.17% against 6.23% in February.GoI cancelled the last auction during the month on account of better than expected taxrevenues which were expected as revised estimates were very conservatives. Investordemand was strong during the month which also helped in stabilizing the yields. RBI continuedto do Open Market Operations / Operation Twists as communicated by the Governor at variousforums. Covid-19 is in wave 2 in India which is more infectious and hopefully less deadly.Partial look-downs may hamper the string recovery as public disobedience is high.DEVEN SANGOIFROM THE CIO'S DESKGlobally, US 10Y bond increased sharply as the new fiscal stimulus was passed. US Fed andEuropean Central Bank both communicated no change in stance and showed higher tolerancefor temporary rise in inflation as long term inflation forecast was either unchanged or lowered.US GDP is likely to grow stronger on account of massive fiscal stimulus and improvement insentiments. However, rising Covid-19 cases in-spite of vaccination is a worry and potentialthreat to global recovery. Crude oil prices moved significantly during the month and correctedsharply before recovering again due to Suez Canal blockage due to 'Ever Given'.We continue to manage funds with dynamic duration management. Globally, bond yields areon the rise on account of strong recovery, higher inflation in developed economies mainly dueto the base effect and rising commodities prices. We expect Inflation in India to stay below 6%in the near term. Our view is that rates would range bound with upwards bias. Risk to our view isa significant rise in inflation, massive Covid-19 outbreak and larger open market operations byRBI.Equities by nature are a volatile asset class and in general, provide higher return than otherasset classes in the long term to compensate for the volatility. Long term horizon in equityinvestments is best suited to maximize the returns.Data Sources: The factual information mentioned abovepertaining to market performance has been taken fromNational Stock Exchange website, CRISIL CustomizedBond fund index, Reserve Bank of India and Bloomberg.3
