PS7. Distinctive FeaturesThis programme:1. Has been developed specifically to run in part time study mode in order to suitindividual student circumstances and address industry requirement to enableemployees to improve skills and knowledge alongside work.2. Allows students to develop their own academic profile through study choices, bothbetween optional modules and within the Applications of Zoology module. This givesstudents a high level of autonomy, allowing them to tailor the programme to theirown interests and expected career path.3. Is taught by staff with established core areas of research activity, and links toemployers, providing opportunities for well supported Honours Project work. The programme benefits from:1. Well-established links to local, national and international conservation organisationsproviding excellent opportunities for students to develop skills and knowledge neededfor employment in the field.2. Links with a wide range of Zoos, museums and aquaria provide excellent experiencefor developing students’ abilities to interpret the natural world and learn therelevance of zoology to the husbandry of captive animals3. Strong pastoral support and small group academic teaching delivered by readilyaccessible academic and support staff which is important for all students butparticularly for students progressing from FdSc programmes that have beensupported in this way.PS8. Student NumbersThe following provides information that should be considered nominal, and therefore not absolutelyrigid, but is of value to guide assurance of the quality of the student experience, functional issuesaround enabling progression opportunities to occur and staffing and resource planning:Minimum student numbers per stage 12Target student numbers per stage 30Maximum student numbers per stage 709 P a geBSc (Hons) Applied Zoology (Top up) Handbook (2019-2020)

PS9. Progression Route(s)Approved “progression route(s)” are those where successful achievement in this programme enablesdirect alignment to join a stage of another programme. This is an approach employed primarily forFoundation Degree students to “top-up” to complete a Bachelor degree, but may be employed forother award types. This is in part an automated admissions criterion and therefore progression may be impacted on byavailability of a position on the progression award; however progression opportunity, if not availablein the first year of application, is guaranteed within 3 years.Progression arrangements with institutions other than Plymouth University carry an increasedelement of risk. It is necessary for the delivering partner institution to obtain formal agreement fromthat institution to guarantee progression for existing students on the programme. For progression toPlymouth University, should there be the need to withdraw the progression route programme(s) theneither this will be delayed to provide progression or appropriate solutions will be found. Thisarrangement is guaranteed for existing students that complete their programme of study with nosuspensions or repeat years and who wish to progress immediately to the University. There are currently no formal progression routes associated with this programme. The contribution of marks from prior levels of study to the progression award is governed byUniversity regulations.10 P a g eBSc (Hons) Applied Zoology (Top up) Handbook (2019-2020)

PS10. Admissions CriteriaQualification(s) Required for Entry to thisProgramme:Details:Pass in relevant Foundation Degree240 credits within a Biological orEnvironmental Science discipline, with asignificant zoological content.Other HE qualifications / non-standard awardsor experiences:APEL / APCL3 possibilities:[ www.plymouth.ac.uk ]Interview / Portfolio requirements:Independent Safeguarding Agency (ISA) /Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearancerequired:240 credits from HND ZoologicalConservation/ Animal Science (suchapplicants will need to complete a bridgingmodule which would cover study skills suchas the Professional Development module. PS11. Academic Standards and Quality EnhancementThe Programme Leader/Manager (or the descriptor) leads the Programme Committee in thePlymouth University’s annual programme monitoring process (APM), as titled at the time ofapproval. APM culminates in the production, maintenance and employment of a programme levelAction Plan, which evidences appropriate management of the programme in terms of quality andstandards. Any formally agreed changes to this process will continue to be followed by theProgramme Leader/Manager (or other descriptor) and their Programme Committee.Elements of this process include engaging with stakeholders. For this definitive document it isimportant to define:Subject External Examiner(s):An Interim visit by External Examiner (EE) (usually between January and February) will review workthat has been marked, consult students and feed back to the programme manager and module leadersand course team.Subject Assessment Panel (SAP) reviews the assessment marking and is scrutinised by the subject EE.Representatives of the team review and present their module marks for each student on theprogramme. The annual Award Assessment Board (AAB) takes place with Programme Manager, the awardingbody’s partnership member and the External to receive the students work and confer progression oraward.Additional stakeholders specific to this programme:Students have the opportunity to discuss the programme independently, twice a year in the StudentReview. This forms part of the discussion for the annual programme monitoring in the autumn andspring of each academic year. The Student Perception Questionnaire (SPQ) is administered during the year and feeds into theprogramme review.Students Representatives attend Annual Programme Monitoring (APM) to contribute student viewsalongside Module Leaders, the Programme Manager and the Assistant Registrar to monitor moduledelivery and the course provision.Curriculum meetings take place once a month to review progression, department provision, resources and staffing.12 P a g eBSc (Hons) Applied Zoology (Top up) Handbook (2019-2020)

PS13. Explanation and Mapping of Learning Outcomes, Teaching & Learning and AssessmentDeveloping graduate attributed and skills, at any level of HE , is dependent on the clarity of strategies and methods for identifying the attributes and skillsrelevant to the programme and where and how these are operationalised. The interrelated factors of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how theseare inclusive in nature, are fundamentally significant to these strategies and methods, as are where and how these are specifically distributed within theprogramme.Ordered by graduate attributes and skills, the following table provides a map of the above, plus an exposition to describe and explain the ideas and strategyof each. Therefore, subsequent to the initial completion for approval, maintenance of this table as and when programme structure changes occur is alsoimportant:Definitions of Graduate Attributes and SkillsRelevant to this ProgrammeFHEQ level: BSc in Applied Zoology: Level 6Prog intendedTeaching and Learning StrategyProg Aims Learning/ MethodsOutcomesRange of AssessmentsRelated edge / Understanding:BSc (Hons) Applied Zoology - For this bachelorlevel programme the following has been informedby the QAA Subject benchmark statements inBiosciences (2007); and in Earth Sciences,Environmental Sciences and Environmental Studies(2007)By the end of this level of this programme thestudents will be able to demonstrate for athreshold pass: Of the role of Zoology in contributing toknowledge Of the complex interrelationships of Biologicalprocesses and the conservation of the naturalenvironmentPrimary: Lectures and tutorialsPractical laboratory andhusbandry sessionsIndustry visitsGuided independent studyLearning from extended workplacementsa, b, gc, d, gc, dc, dc, dBioscience:genericstandards –Threshold levels(5.7-3)Ecology &EnvironmentalBiology –15 P a g eBSc (Hons) Applied Zoology (Top up) Handbook (2019-2020)
