THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORSFROM THE DIRECTOROne positive thing that has comeout of this pandemic has beensome new opportunities available tous due to our extensive use of virtualprogramming. Orange County LibrarySystem used to be an entirely in-personoperation – all of our events andprograms happened at one of our 15library locations. Now, though, we offerall programs virtually, which has made itpossible for us to work with presenterswho may not otherwise have been ableto travel to us for an event.NEAFor more information visit:ocls.info/bigreadMARCH 28- APRIL 242NEA Big Read is a program of theNational Endowment for theArts in partnership withArts Midwest. For example, for this year’s AfricanAmerican Read-In, an annual eventduring which presenters read aloudfrom prose and poetry composedby African American authors, we arepleased to have two keynote presenterswho may not have been able to join us ifit were happening at one of our libraries.USA Today-bestselling author BeverlyJenkins, whose romance novels featurestories populated by Black charactersliving in the 19th-century, will be oneof our keynote presenters. Our otherkeynote is the Librarian of Congress Dr.Carla Hayden, the first African Americanand the first woman to ever hold thepost. We’re very excited that these twoexceptional women will join our panelof local politicians, newsmakers andinfluencers at this year’s event. It willstream live on February 28 over YouTubeand Facebook – you don’t need a librarycard to watch, as the Read-In is opento all. You can read an interview withJenkins on page 16 of this flipbook.African American Read-In is not ouronly Black History Month event. Wehave events and programs throughoutFebruary for library lovers of allages. Our Homeschool Meetup thismonth focuses on discussing AfricanAmerican inventors, and “Look I’m aScientist!” will help educate our youngeraudiences about discoveries made byBlack scientists. We’ll have a Grammynominated musician Nathi Gcabashefor a live musical performance, artprograms about Black artists, a Princessand the Frog storytime and Black HistoryMonth Bingo. Use simple math countingexercises to show what’s in your heart.Recommended for ages 3–5.“The sight of lovers feedeth those in love”– William Shakespeare, As You Like ItIt’s February, again, which means love is all around us. Typically, Valentine’s Day is defined by roses and chocolates. Butin the Florida heat, flowers wilt and chocolate melts. So instead, why not get your significant other something morepermanent? Say, the lasting memory of time spent watching a romantic movie specially selected from Orange CountyLibrary System’s free home delivery and streaming collections. After all, why break the bank going to an expensive dinner, when you can make the more conscientious and frugal decision to just Hoopla and Hang, Kanopy and Canoodle, or evenLibrary DVD and Liaise?High Fidelity (DVD)In a list about romance movies, it seems fittingto include a romance movie about lists. HighFidelity stars John Cusack as record store owner,Rob (not Lloyd Dobbler), reaching out to formergirlfriends after a particularly devastatingdumping. The movie’s structure hinges on Rob’scompulsion to collate everything in to “Top5” lists, from favorite films, to “desert island, alltime, top five most memorable breakups.” HighFidelity is particularly ideal for those who sufferfrom an overabundance of useless pop cultureknowledge, but there’s enough sardonic wit toplease anyone who’s had their heart broken.Little Italy (DVD, Hoopla)Let’s be clear about this up front: Little Italy isnot a good movie. In fact, it’s objectively terrible. But there is an undeniable charm in howconsistently terrible the film is. So much so, thatit makes for an excellent date night experience. This movie has it all: dubious attempts atquestionable Italian accents, nonexistentchemistry between the two romantic leads(Emma Roberts stares at Hayden Christensenwith a disdain that suggests he owes hermoney), confusing dialogue, and pizza. Lots andlots of pizza.12Valentine Escape GameFridays, February 5 & 19, 4:30 p.m.Join us for a Valentine’s Day themedescape room filled with candy, achocolate factory and a fun filledadventure. Recommended forages 6–12.Beginners (DVD)We’ve included Beginners as a selection in ourDIY Film Festival section before, but the film’suplifting message about never being tooold to start over, or the way it challenges thebygone notions of how society defined love, makes it deserving of another mention. Withartful direction, and a career performance fromChristopher Plummer, Beginners hits all theright notes. And while the film is unmistakablya romantic comedy, it’s packaged in such away that even the most cynical viewer may notmind.Seemingly Every LifetimeChristmas Movie Ever (Hoopla)Not quite ready for the holidays to be over? That’s alright, neither is Lifetime. And withyour library card, you have instant access toan expansive catalog of their holiday-themedromance movies. I haven’t seen many of theseas, true to Lifetime’s name, it would take thecourse of my natural life to watch all of them, but my understanding is you more or less knowwhat you’re in for: Girl meets boy. Boy meets girl.Boy’s family opens rival pizza place next door.Wait, that’s Little Italy Paris, Je T’Aime (DVD, Kanopy, Hoopla)Famed directors including Wes Craven, Joel andEthan Coen, Alfonso Cuaron, Gus Van Sant, andmany, many more, helm short vignettes thatmake up this anthology film about the titularcity of love. The film’s exuberance is matchedonly by its creative artistry, and the sugared andcomedic perspectives on love make Paris, JeT’Aime a perfect Valentine’s Day watch. The film’sspiritual, and more domestic successor, NewYork, I Love You, is also available for check outthrough Hoopla.Either way, sometimes it’s comforting to knowa story ends happily ever after before you evenbegin, and in that case, these films are like anice, warm blanket for two. These titles and more are available for homedelivery through the library’s DVD Vault.Cuisine Corner Junior: ValentineRice Krispies TreatsWednesday, February 10, 4 p.m.Learn how to turn a classic delightinto your next Valentine’s Day treat!Recommended for ages 9–12.Science of LoveThursday, February 11, 4 p.m.We may not be making love potions, but this event is sure to get yourheart beating with fun scienceexperiments and STEAM challenges.Recommended for ages 6–12.Love Monster Storytime & CraftFriday, February 12, 11 a.m.Enjoy a Valentine’s Day storytime andfollow along craft inspired by thebook Love Monster by Rachel Bright.Recommended for ages 3–5.Cute as Cupid Makeup TutorialFriday, February 12, 3 p.m.Time to get cute with cupid as wecreate a Valentine’s Day-inspired lookthat is sure to be fun and flattering.Learn fun facts about one of the mostpopular love myths as we get cute.Recommended for ages 13–18.Valentine OrigamiFriday, February 12, 4 p.m.Cut, fold and paste your wayto the cutest valentines ever!Recommended for ages 13–18.ADULT EVENTSStress Buster Art: Paper Mosaic HeartTuesday, February 9, 10:30–11:45 a.m.A relaxing and stress buster art adventurewhere you can create a paper mosaicheart craft. This year’sRead-In will be hosted livevirtually on the library’s Facebookand YouTube pages.FEATURED GUEST SPEAKERSWhy did you decide to participate inthe African American Read-In?I decided to participate in the OCLS’s2021 African American Read-In becauseI wouldn’t be the author I am todaywere it not for the Mark Twain Libraryon Detroit’s eastside. It fed my love forreading. For readers who might be new toyour writing, which book would yourecommend starting with and why?If I were to recommend a book to beginwith, I’d pick Topaz for those who likehistorical romance, because there arevery few African American centeredwesterns and it’s fun! For a moremodern day read, I’d choose Bring onthe Blessings. It deals with found families, adoption and second chances in asmall historic African American townon the plains of Kansas, and has beenembraced by readers of all races, agesand genders. In your historical fiction, you includea bibliography; what inspired you toinclude these lists?I include the bibliography so readerswanting to dig deeper into the subjectmatter have a place to begin theirsearch.I’d tell them to thinkof their card as a freeticket to travel to faroff places If you were giving advice to a noviceromance writer, what is one thingyou would advise them not to do?I’d advise a new romance writer not togo into the writing with the thoughtthat one, it’s easy to write a romance, and two, that all the author has toinclude are love scenes.Libraries have played a significantrole in your life, starting with yourmom, an avid reader. And you werea librarian at one time. What wouldyou say to a young person whohasn’t discovered their library
