51 Shakti Peethas – A CompilationShakti Peeth-An IntroductionShakti Peeth – The Background Story:When Sati, the wife of Shiva and the first incarnation of Parvati, sacrificed herself at a yagna being performed by her father theKing Daksha; a very distraught Shiva started dancing with herbody. The world was terrorized from this Tandava Nritya and tostop the devastating penance, Vishnu used his Sudarshan chakra(the whirling knife on his finger tip) and completely cut up Sati'sbody in several pieces. Wherever her body parts fell, a temple waserected to commemorate different manifestations of Shiva andParvati and became a Hindu pilgrimage. They are called Pitha orSakti Pithas. These temples are scattered from present dayPakistan to India to Sri Lanka to Bangladesh. Sati is also calledDevi or Shakti (Strength). In the pages that follow, we have tried to capture all pertinent information relating to ShaktiPeethas in and around India. This is located near Jullundher inPunjab. From Jalandhar to Jalamukhi by local transport liketanga. The Temple of Jvalamukhi is an astounding sacred power point an adventure unto itself. Within Jvalamukhi is an archaicsanctuary to the tongue of Kali, the source of the flame oftransformation. The sanctuary contains a shallow pool of water.Floating above the water are perpetual, natural-gas-fueled blueflames.A Foreign Visitor, Mark Roberts comments on Jvalamukhi asunder:To be honest, on that first reading of the flames of transformation, my first reaction was,"somebody has been reading H. Ryder Haggard's SHE one too many times!!".However, further research has proven Jvalamukhi to be quite real. It is 34 km. south ofKangra, in Himachal Pradesh bounded by Tibet and the Himalayas to the North East andJammu & Kashmir to the North West, and the Punjab to the west.It seems probable that Jvalamukhi provided H. Ryder Haggard with the inspiration to write ofSHE and her flames of transformation (he worked in India as well as Africa for a number ofyears). And, for me, the temple did indeed provide the inspiration & clues to making the finalconnection for the Dakini Tantra from the present to the days of high antiquity.Copyrights – P.K.Hari / www.vedarahasya.net
