Child SafetyVehicles Without Rear SeatsINSTALLING CHILDRESTRAINTSRear Seat Delete (If Equipped)WARNING: It is extremelydangerous to ride in a cargo area, insideor outside of a vehicle. In a crash, peopleriding in these areas are more likely to beseriously injured or killed. Do not allowpeople to ride in any area of your vehiclethat is not equipped with seats andseatbelts. Make sure everyone in yourvehicle is in a seat and properly using aseatbelt. Failure to follow this warningcould result in serious personal injury ordeath.E216824Once you have installed the child restraintusing the seatbelt, you can attach the toptether strap.Attach the tether strap only to theappropriate tether anchor as shown. Thetether strap may not work properly if youattach it somewhere other than the correcttether anchor.Perform the following to attach a childrestraint to the tether anchor.Route the tether strap as follows.E216990This is not a seating position. You cannotplace persons or child restraints in the rearof the vehicle with the rear seat deleteoption.E216991For coupe without rear seats, route thetether strap through the inboard slot of thefront passenger seat backrest or route thetether strap over the top of the seat. Youmay need a tether strap extension to reachthe tether anchor.8Mustang (CZG) GT500, United States of America, Vehicles With: SVT Performance Package, enUSA, First-Printing

Child SafetyIf you install a child restraint and youattach the top tether strap to the propertop tether anchor, do not tighten the tetherstrap enough to lift the child restraint offthe vehicle seat cushion when the child isseated in it. Keep the tether strap just snugwithout lifting the front of the childrestraint. Keeping the child restraint justtouching the vehicle seat gives the bestprotection in a severe crash.See the Child Safety chapter in your baseOwner's Manual for more information.9Mustang (CZG) GT500, United States of America, Vehicles With: SVT Performance Package, enUSA, First-Printing

Fuel and RefuelingDo not use: Diesel fuel. Fuels containing kerosene or paraffin. Fuel containing more than 15% ethanolor E85 fuel. Fuels containing methanol. Fuels containing metallic-basedadditives, including manganese-basedcompounds. Fuels containing the octane boosteradditive, methylcyclopentadienylmanganese tricarbonyl (MMT). Leaded fuel, using leaded fuel isprohibited by law.FUEL QUALITYChoosing the Right FuelE185193Use only premium unleaded gasoline witha minimum pump (R M)/2 octane ratingof 91. For optimal performance, usepremium unleaded gasoline with an octanerating of 93 or higher. The use of fuels with metallic compoundssuch as methylcyclopentadienylmanganese tricarbonyl (commonly knownas MMT), which is a manganese-basedfuel additive, will impair engineperformance and affect the emissioncontrol system. The use of the correct fuel is an importantpart of the proper maintenance of yourvehicle, and a condition of the vehicleWarranty. For this vehicle, the use ofgasoline with an octane level of 91 orhigher is required. The use of gasoline withan octane rating lower than 91 willinvalidate the vehicle Warranty. It candegrade vehicle performance and lead tosevere mechanical damage.Do not be concerned if the enginesometimes knocks lightly. However, if theengine knocks heavily while using fuel withthe recommended octane rating, contactan authorized dealer to prevent any enginedamage. We recommend Top Tier detergentgasolines, where available to help minimizeengine deposits and maintain optimalvehicle and engine performance. Foradditional information, refer towww.toptiergas.com.Note: Use of any fuel other than thoserecommended can impair the emissioncontrol system and cause a loss of vehicleperformance.16Mustang (CZG) GT500, United States of America, Vehicles With: SVT Performance Package, enUSA, First-Printing

TransmissionUnderstanding the Positions ofYour Rotary Shift TransmissionAUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONWARNING: Always fully apply theparking brake and make sure you shiftinto park (P). Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in personal injuryor death.WARNING: Do not apply the brakepedal and accelerator pedalsimultaneously. Applying both pedalssimultaneously for more than a fewseconds will limit engine performance, which may result in difficulty maintainingspeed in traffic and could lead to seriousinjury.E267048WARNING: When your vehicle isstationary, keep the brake pedal fullypressed when shifting gears. Failure tofollow this instruction could result inpersonal injury, death or ual.Your vehicle has an electronic transmissionshifter. The transmission selector is on thecenter console.Note: You may not be able to shift out ofpark (P) unless the intelligent access key isinside your vehicle. The instrument cluster displays the currentdrive range.Note: Unlike the typical automatictransmission that has a torque convertercoupling the engine to the transmission, thisvehicle has a dual clutch transmission, which couples the engine to thetransmission with two clutches in a similarfashion as a standard manual transmission.Park (P)With the transmission in park (P), yourvehicle locks the transmission andprevents the wheels from turning. Alwayscome to a complete stop before puttingyour vehicle into and out of park (P).When you switch the ignition off, yourvehicle shifts into park (P). If you switchthe ignition off when the vehicle is moving, the transmission first shifts into neutral (N)until it reaches approximately 3 mph(5 km/h) or slower, then shifts into park(P).17Mustang (CZG) GT500, United States of America, Vehicles With: SVT Performance Package, enUSA, First-Printing

TransmissionThe electric parking brake may apply whenyou shift to park (P) without the brakepedal fully pressed. The electric parkingbrake applies when you shift to park (P)on large slopes. The electric parking brakereleases with the drive away releasefunction, or if you manually release it. SeeElectric Parking Brake (page 24).Reverse (R)With the transmission selector in reverse(R), your vehicle moves backward. Alwayscome to a complete stop before shiftinginto and out of reverse (R).WARNING: Move the transmissionselector lever to reverse (R) only whenyour vehicle is stationary and the engineis at idle speed.Note: A warning tone sounds if you openthe driver door and you have not shifted thetransmission selector to park (P).Automatic Return to ParkNeutral (N)Your vehicle has a feature that shifts intopark (P) when any of the followingconditions occur and your vehicle isstationary: You switch the vehicle off. You open the driver door with yourseatbelt unlatched. You unlatch the driver seatbelt whenthe driver door is open. With the transmission selector in neutral(N), you can start your vehicle and it is freeto roll. Hold the brake pedal down when inthis position.WARNING: In neutral (N) yourvehicle has the ability to roll freely. If youintend to leave your vehicle, make sureyou apply the parking brake. If you turn your vehicle off when moving, your vehicle first shifts into neutral (N) untilit slows down enough to shift into park (P)automatically.Stay in Neutral ModeNote: This feature does not operate whenyour vehicle is in Stay in Neutral mode.Note: Do not use Stay In Neutral Mode fortowing as the transmission shifts to park(P) if the battery voltage becomes low.Note: This feature may not work properlyif the door ajar switch is malfunctioning. Ifyour door ajar indicator does not illuminatewhen you open the driver door, the indicatorilluminates with the driver door closed or aTransmission not in Park cluster messageappears with the transmission in gear andthe driver door closed, see your authorizeddealer.Note: Stay in Neutral Mode is a temporaryvehicle state that works with the enginebeing in the running or OFF state. Extendedusage of Stay in Neutral Mode when theengine is OFF may result in a battery voltagereduction to the level where the vehicle mayno longer start. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in vehicle damagenot covered by the vehicle warranty.Note: If you have waited an extendedperiod of time, 2-15 minutes before startingyour vehicle, unlatching your seatbelt cancause this feature to activate, even with thedriver door closed. When in Stay in Neutral Mode, you canstart your vehicle and it is free to roll.To enter Stay in Neutral Mode, do thefollowing:1. Bring your vehicle to a complete stop.2. Shift into neutral (N).18Mustang (CZG) GT500, United States of America, Vehicles With: SVT Performance Package, enUSA, First-Printing

Transmission3. Press the manual (M) button within 5seconds after shifting to Neutral.Note: A Stay in Neutral Mode confirmationmessage appears in the information displaywhen your vehicle has entered Stay inNeutral Mode and the neutral (N) buttonon the transmission selector slowly blinks.SelectShift Dual ClutchTransmissionTo exit Stay in Neutral Mode, press thebrake pedal and shift to park (P) or startthe engine and apply brakes to shift toanother gear, for example drive (D) orreverse (R).Selectshift is operational in both drive (D),known as Live in Drive, and manual (M).Your vehicle has a SelectShift Dual Clutchtransmission. The SelectShift Dual Clutchtransmission gives you the ability tochange gears up or down without a clutchas desired. While the vehicle can be started as low as-22 F (-30 C), the transmission does notshift from park (P) until the transmissionfluid temperatures warms up above -4 F(-20 C).Drive (D)Drive (D) is the normal driving position forthe best fuel economy and smoothness.Shift the transmission selector to drive (D)to allow your vehicle to move forward andshift automatically through the forwardgears. If the transmission is overheating fromextreme use, it can result in the followingsymptoms.Clutch Over Temperature: This messageindicates one or both clutches areoverheating and may open to protect thesystem. This occurs when the clutchabsorbs too much energy in the form ofslip, due to a variety of reasons. The transmission shifts to the appropriategear for optimum performance based onambient temperature, road slope, vehicleload and your input. Some examples of what could cause thisare: Launch control at an RPM set speedhigher than optimal for the currentconditions. The best mitigation is toeither lower the RPM set speed forlaunch control maneuvers, or notholding the RPM set speed as long inpreparation for launch control. Slow uphill driving with no throttleapplication, known as creeping, orusing the throttle instead of the braketo prevent rolling back on an uphillgrade. These maneuvers cause theclutches to be in a constant state ofslip. The best mitigation is to use thebrake when at a standstill, or find asafe place to stop and put thetransmission in park (P) until you canachieve a faster uphill speed ofapproximately 10 mph (16 km/h).Manual (M)To select manual (M), place thetransmission selector in drive (D) and pressthe M button in the middle of the selector. With the transmission selector in manual(M), the driver can change gears up ordown using the paddle shifters. Afterpressing the manual (M) button while thetransmission is in drive (D), you now havecontrol of selecting the gear you desireusing the ( ) and (-) paddle shifters toupshift and downshift. To exit manual (M) and return to drive (D),press the M button again.19Mustang (CZG) GT500, United States of America, Vehicles With: SVT Performance Package, enUSA, First-Printing

TransmissionIf the clutch opens for temperaturemitigation, clutch capability should berestored automatically after a brief periodof time. If drive capability is not restoredmomentarily, stop in a safe location andshut the vehicle off for 5-10 minutes. Ifthere are still transmission issues aftershutting the vehicle off, contact yourauthorized dealer. Transmission Too Hot Press Brake: Thismessage acts as a warning that thetransmission fluid is beginning to overheat. When a yellow warning appears in thecluster, you may notice a decrease inperformance as engine torque limits itselfto help cool the transmission fluid.Maximum torque limitation is indicated bya red warning. The best way to quickly coolthe transmission fluid and restore fullperformance is non-aggressive driving ata constant speed between 40–70 mph(65–112 km/h) in the highest availablegear. Pull and release (tap) the right paddleto ( ) to upshift.Pull and release (tap) the left paddle(-) to downshift.Pull and hold both the right paddle ( )and the left paddle (-) to temporarilyopen the clutches. The transmissionremains in neutral (N) until you releaseboth paddles. When the clutches areopen, no engine power transmits to thewheels and the vehicle can roll freelyunless you apply the brakes.Pull and hold the right paddle ( ) toexit Live in Drive and command thetransmission to sequentially upshift tothe maximum allowed gear.Pull and hold the left paddle (-) for thelowest allowable gear. This is onlyavailable in Normal and Sport drivemodes.Note: Paddle icons appear next to currentindicated gear when in Live in Drive.Selectshift in Drive (D)Provides a temporary manual mode forperforming more demanding maneuverswhere extra control of gear selection isbeneficial. For example, when towing orpassing another vehicle. This mode holdsa selected gear for a temporary period oftime depending on driver inputs likeaccelerator pedal travel and the steeringwheel angle.E293833Note: When in Live in Drive and you quicklypress the accelerator pedal all the waydown, the transmission downshifts formaximum performance when in drive (D).To prevent the engine from either runningat too low an RPM which risks stalling, orat too high an RPM which risks enginedamage, Live in Drive automaticallydownshifts and upshifts if the enginespeed is approaching idle or redline andyou have not shifted in time. Although Livein Drive makes some shifts for you, it stillallows you to shift at any time if itdetermines that there is no risk of damageto the engine from lugging or over-revving.20Mustang (CZG) GT500, United States of America, Vehicles With: SVT Performance Package, enUSA, First-Printing
