icommunicateSPEECH & COMMUNICATION THERAPYUsing Visuals to facilitate toileting difficultiesMany parents and teachers feel frustration when they have difficulty teaching childrenon the autistic spectrum, or with special needs to use the toilet correctly. There aremany different toileting strategies and their success depends on the child and thenature of their communication difficulty. For some children a simple visual story workswell. This story will break the toileting process into simple visual steps. By showingthe child the story and taking them through each step, you can sometimes get thedesired effect. However, this does not work forall children. One system I havefound that works for somechildren is to use a character ofinterest to the child, alongsidethe visual story. If the child hasreading ability you can also addspeech boxes. The character ofinterest could be a children’scharacter such as BuzzLightyear or Thomas the TankEngine.By placing a picture of thecharacter on each page of thestory and reading the story asthough it is read by thecharacter sometimes has agreater impact than reading ityourself.Staple, or laminate and attach the pictures below and create your own toilet storybook.www.icommunicatetherapy.comYour Total Online Speech, Language & Communication Therapy Resource.
