The LamplighterJune 2018 Salem United Church of Christ Higginsville, MissouriDear Friends,I write this during a break in the 2018 Festival of Homiletics in Washington, DC. This is, if I recall correctly, mysixth Festival. Each year, during the third full week of May, 1200-1800 pastors, seminarians, denominational leaders, and interested lay people come together to hear some of the finest preaching and most challenging lecturesaround. We get to hear from many corners of our world, and from thoughtful people thinking big ideas. For mostof you, the thought of listening to three sermons a day, plus a couple of lectures, is less than attractive. To me, it isenergizing. The theme of the Festival this year is “Preaching and Politics.” To many of us, that might seem to be a contradiction in terms. When we recall, however, that the biblical prophets, and Jesus, devoted a great deal of time and energy speaking truth to power, we have to admit that the terms are related after all. Thus, on the first evening, at the Washington National Cathedral, we heard a sermon that challenged us to considerthat when the Holy Spirit, our Advocate (a legal representative), that Jesus promises to his friends and followers, who will guide us into all the truth (John 15.13), the truth is going to place our testimony over against the world’sentrenched systems and interests. The preacher declared that when our proclamation that “He is risen! he is risenindeed!,” is not followed with “I have seen the Lord!,” then we have sidestepped our responsibility to confront thepowers. In the lecture that followed the evening worship, the speaker quoted D.H. Lawrence, who said (this is myparaphrase), “The world fears a new experience. It does not fear a new idea because it can pigeonhole a new ideaand thus limit its effect. But the world cannot pigeonhole a new experience.” Big thoughts all around. And so it goes. And it may just be that I am getting old and emotional, but these words and these ideas often bring tears to myeyes. The sound of a thousand voices singing “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty” so fills me with awe andwonder that my voice fails me. I see Ernest Green, one of the Little Rock Nine, and I just start weeping. I sit in asanctuary where Frederick Douglass preached and where his funeral was held. It all fills me to overflowing. There is always much to think about and much that is challenging, but, for me, it is always refreshing. I thank youfor the opportunity each year to attend this significant event.Grace and Peace,Tommy1

Five decades on,turmoil still abounds.May we take hope and inspiration from Robert Kennedy, who, on the night of Martin Luther King’s death, replaced apresidential-campaign speech with these words:“What we need in the United States is not division; nothatred; not violence and lawlessness, but love, andwisdom, and compassion toward one another; and a feelingof justice toward those who still suffer within our country, whether they be white or black.”Kennedy added: “We will have difficult times in the future. But the vast majority of white people and black people in this country want to live together and want justicefor all human beings. Let's dedicate ourselves to tamethe savageness of man and make gentle the life of thisworld and say a prayer for our country and for ourpeople.”3Haiden JensenCorey RobinetteKathy Bodenstab-WillsSusan JensenBill DavenportJanet KnehansJakob LongJacob BaggsA.J.
