Musical MemosWe have had a great year in the music room. We studied the history of music throughout the year, and listened to many amazing pieces by composers throughout history. We also took time during March to celebrate Music in Our School Month by asking students to finish the statement, “Music makes me .” We used these responses to create a mural of all the ways musicmakes an impact on each of us. I hope you enjoy these pictures of some of our amazing learning opportunities this year.Sara JohnsonRustic Oak Music TeacherAttendanceNo More Tardies or Early Check Outs, Please! We are still working to improve this.If children don’t attend school regularly, they miss out on foundational reading and math skills and the good habit ofattendance that will carry them into college and careers. Data has shown that children who were absent in kindergarten and first grade (missing two days of school per month) were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of thirdgrade. Students are tardy if they are not in the classroom before the 8 am bell. Further, our school day does not enduntil 3:35. Please do not check your student out early because he/she will miss important information and interruptthe learning environment of the other students. Here is an 81 second video to share with your students: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v AC3u0 9dVPUREMINDER: If you are moving out of our attendance zone, or outof district and not returning next year, please notify the front office. Thank you!

Counselor CornerMayFor the month of May, Pearland ISD is focusing on the word priorities and balance.Priority is defined as something that is more important than other things and that needs to be done or dealtwith first. Priorities are the things that someone cares about and thinks are important. As adults we know that balance and priorities in life are two essential elements. And, it’s never too early tostart helping kids focus on these things as well. But remember, what we model is what they will follow.Setting priorities is a learned task. Here are some tips for parents on how to help you and your childrenlearn to prioritize and find balance in a world full of lots of choices! Use vacations, summer break and other periods of free time to create a family “bucketlist” of sorts. Write down everything that needs to be done and everything everyone wants to do duringthat period of relative free time. Now, work as a family to prioritize the list. How many things can you realistically do in that amount of time? What things must be done? What things seem like they must be done, butcould be done another time without negative consequences? What things are the most important to complete? Is there a way to prioritize the list so the most things get done School work is a great way to teach priorities and consequences. Which subjects does yourchild think he should spend the most time studying? Should she prioritize getting her homework done beforerelaxing or does relaxing for a few minutes before working make her more productive? What are the consequences of not putting a high enough priority on a school project versus playing a game? Allowances are another way to help your child practice setting priorities. Should he spendmoney on candy or save for the camera he wants? How many quality, classic outfits can she get with themoney she has? Money is a great way to teach kids how to make decisions now with future goals in mind. Service work is another way for your children to practice setting priorities. How much timeand money should your family set aside to help others? Who should get how much? Who is the most important person or group to serve today? Who will benefit the most from their service?Set aside a relaxed time to discuss your family’s priorities. What happens when you have to decidebetween two things which seem equally important? Throw out some scenarios to your older children thatyou and your spouse had to face in your younger years. What would your children have done in your situation? How did they make their choice? What were your priorities at the time and what are they now? Here is a great video that you can watch with your kids to illustrate the importance of puttingimportant things first. You can actually do the activity as well to make it more impactful.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v m0hqBIugr7IMrs. Golden, Campus Counselor

From the NurseMedication—If you have medication at school, I will be contacting you to pick up theremaining medication. Every school year we start all over again with new medicationsand paperwork. If your student has an appointment with the doctor during August before school starts, that is a good time to get refills on the prescriptions or any emergency medications thatmay need to be brought to school.Immunizations—elementary students must be complete when they enroll and currentlythere are no vaccines that are due for this age group after they enroll. If your child is ona catch-up schedule, you should already be aware of the scheduled due date for themissing vaccines.
