IntroductionTrademark Application Guidelinesfor the College of Lake CountyPerformance Focused2Consistency and commitment to higher standards adds value to every encounterwith everyone. This is not the traditional corporate identification manual, in form or in substance. This publication is designed to provide implementation guidelines for the newtrademark of the College of Lake County. The goal of this process is to consistentlypresent the CLC trademark and its accompanying nomenclature across themajority of media possibilities. The result will reflect the unified and cohesivemanagement philosophy of CLC throughout its institutional organization, educational units, sub-units and community initiatives.Like anything of real value, the implementation process will take time and thediligent efforts of many individuals. It will especially require the support andparticipation of those individuals who at first may not recognize the long-termvalue of such a program. When this process is fully implemented over the next several years, the resultwill be a cadre of materials, publications and mixed media applications thatvisually and verbally demonstrate one organization speaking with one voice,as an integrated educational community.

IntroductionTrademark Application Guidelinesfor the College of Lake CountyPerformance Process3This guide will focus on how best to consistently present the elementsof the CLC brand, through the application of its trademark across severalcommunication devices.Trademark: This section is driven by the “less is more” philosophy; thesimpler the better. However, when selecting the most appropriate versionof the trademark, the decision should be based on the highest probabilityfor quality reproduction. Consider the budget, the capabilities of themanufacturer, the surface of the material being addressed and theintended life span of the items being prepared.Typography: The ropes or lines that attach the sails of a ship to its hullare like the typography in a brand identification program. Typography tiesthe trademark to the organization it represents, to the services it providesto the attitude and values it professes.Stationery: When stationery-related materials, from different areas withinthe organization look related, it infers that the College of Lake County, itspeople and its values are integrated through the entire system.Publications: The guidelines and recommendations section for publicationsserve to demonstrate the sizes and positions of the trademark when usedon print materials for the three recommended publication sizes.

5TrademarkFirst impressions are crucial. In the world of communication, consistencyand continuity are as important as creativityand imagination. Creating material that isvisually different for the sake of differenceis counterproductive. When creative and imaginativeenergy is focused within the corporatecommunication guidelines, the resultsare especially effective. In many cases, a sign, a newsletter or brochure will be the first impression the Collegeof Lake County brand makes with its audiences. The visual image the college will projectthrough its communication program is vital to establishing and maintaining a favorableprofessional and public opinion of CLC and its initiatives. This manual will serve to illustrate the proper use of the brand and trademark, aswell as the application of these elements within various forms of visual communication fromthe College of Lake County. The effectiveness of the identity depends on the consistentapplication of the various design elements. These guidelines are intended to assist those who are engaged in the implementationof the communication program. Many of the application guidelines depend upon relativesize, proportion and positioning of one design element with another. These rules have beendeveloped through the careful consideration of many factors, both functional and aesthetic.Adherence to the guidelines is the key to the success of this identification program. Theactive cooperation of all those responsible for the coordination of the identity program withinthe organization and its community activities is essential.Trademark Application Guidelinesfor the College of Lake County

6TrademarkNomenclatureThe College of Lake County trademarksystem consists of three elements. The positive associations that the College of Lake County’s name is a valuable asset. This branding system provides a structure for identifying the activities associated withCLC in a controlled and consistent way. The sizes and relationships of its elements, to oneanother within the system, have been carefully considered and should be strictly followedin order to maintain the integrity of the trademark and the brand.Trademark Application Guidelinesfor the College of Lake CountySymbol: The symbol is a unique illustration, representing the merging of the CLCmonogram into a dimensional symbol. There are only two forms of the symbol,as a three color version and a one color(black) continuous tone version. Do notattempt to redraw or convert either oneof these versions. Use only those imagesprovided with the rigorous adherenceto maintaining the protected clear spacearound them. The symbol may NOT beapplied, on its own, without prior writtenapproval from the CLC Public Relationsand Marketing department.Logotype: The “CLC” logotype is alsoa unique redrawing of letters forms spellingout the “College of Lake County” name. Each character is sized and drawn to createa “nested” relationship with one another. The logotype may not be used, under anycircumstances, without its appropriatelysized and positioned symbol. Together, thesymbol and the logotype are the “logo”or trademark. Do not attempt to redrawor recreate these elements in any way.Tag Line/Positioning Statement: This lineof text was developed to reflect a relationshipsimilar to that of a verb to a noun, providingan action in the form of a promise. Its sizeand position in relation to the trademarkelements is carefully balanced from a visualperspective as well as an implied promisebetween the college and those it serves.Do not attempt to redraw or recreate theseelements in any way.Trademark: While the configuration to theright is both a trademark and a logo, theword “trademark” is a legal distinction andrepresents ownership and responsibility. The “TM” device affirms that distinction, therefore it must appear as part of thetrademark when applied to all documentswhere legal responsibility and authorityis asserted. Changes to any of the definedrelationships is unacceptable.CollegeLake CountyCollegeLakeCountyConnect to Your FutureCollegeLakeCountyConnect to Your FutureTM

TrademarkColorColor plays a significant role in maintainingvisual connections between communicationdevices and the institutions they represent.Strong and consistent application of corecolors will build and maintain thoseconnections indefinitely. The GREEN, BLUE and BLACK colors used in the College of Lake County trademark configurationare sacrosanct and should never be replaced or reduced in intensity. To maintain that intensity, the preferred background for the trademark is white. Occasionally, the use of the CLC-GREY isacceptable as a background color behind the College of Lake County trademark. BLACK is alsoacceptable as long as the CLC trademark typography is white. When reversing the trademark outof a photograph or an illustration, it is paramount to strive for maximum contrast with minimumdetails behind the trademark block, maintaining the integrity of the letterforms. In this way, large amounts of “white space” become another visually consistentelement linking CLC communication devices to one another and to the network of CLCrelated activities and initiatives. From a branding and trademark perspective, the colors GREEN and BLUE are primarycolors. The colors GREY and BLACK are secondary colors, they serve in a supporting role. Thecolors RED and OCHER are tertiary colors, serving as accents.Trademark Application Guidelinesfor the College of Lake County9CLC GREEN RGBR / 114G / 191B / 68CLC GREEN CMYKC / 60M/0Y / 100K/0CLC GREEN PantonePMS 360CLC BLUE RGBR/0G / 83B / 116CLC BLUE CMYKC / 100M / 40Y / 20K / 40CLC BLUE PantonePMS 308CLC GREY RGBR / 130G / 117B / 114CLC GREY CMYKC / 50M / 50Y / 50K / 10CLC GREY PantonePMS 409CLC RED RGBR / 198G / 29B / o35CLC RED CMYKC / 10M / 100Y / 100K / 10CLC RED PantonePMS 1791CLC OCHER RGBR / 205G / 151B/0CLC OCHER CMYKC / 21M / 40Y / 100K / 01CLC OCHER PantonePMS 1245Note: Pantone Matching System is a nationally recognized system for ensuring accuracy of color in communication and reproduction. While almost nothing is for sure, I would suggest that the award you will receivenext week from the AIA was inevitable. By this I don’t mean that the award is easily come by or inany way undeserved.I mean inevitable in the sense that your career and the work you have produced on behalf of yourclients has been consistently exemplary from your first few years in the profession. You don’tappear to be challenging or competitive, rather you express an engaging and genuinely interesteddemeanor. To some these may seem to be ephemeral qualities. For me they are value. What iseven more obvious is your level of commitment to the profession and the respect you demonstratetoward employers, clients, colleagues, contemporaries as well as students and how that respectis returned. These qualities are apparent to anyone with whom you’ve had even the shortestconversation. However, you have one gift that may be at the core of the your other talents.
