Shield a Badge With a PrayerTragedy in LubbockIt was a tragic morning this past Saturday, Jan 11, in Lubbock when a police officer and firefighter were both killed in the lineof duty while working a traffic accident on I-27.Police Officer Nicholas Reyna had served with the Lubbock PD for only one year and was 27 years old. He is the first policeofficer killed in the line of duty in Texas this year and the fourth already nationwide.Firefighter Eric Hill was a Lieutenant with the Lubbock Fire Department. He was a 10 year veteran of the FD and was aparamedic. Lt. Hill was also the first firefighter killed in Texas this year and the second nationwide. Another firefighter, MattDawson, was also seriously injured. His updated condition was that he is doing better than expected although he still has along recovery ahead of him.As we all know, winter conditions in Texas can create havoc. All First Responders risk their lives helping others during thosetimes. We must do our part in driving safely and cautiously so as not to create a danger to those working an accident.Let’s continue to pray for all our officers and first responders, for their safety, good judgment, and a safe return home. And aprayer for the families of Officer Reyna and Firefighter Hill as they struggle with this loss.Consider starting a Shield a Badge program at your council. Both suffered spinal injuries well beforeThanksgiving (two totally separate accidents). However, both were in need of wheelchairs that were comfortable and especially ones thatare light enough for their families members to put in the car for easier mobility. These chairs worked out great and both men were more thanhappy to receive them. Both stated that the wheelchairs that the hospital wheelchairs are too big, uncomfortable, and much too heavy fortheir wives or children to load into the car. I petitioned wheelchairs for them a thru the contact that Shad Dooley provided in our Ft. WorthChapter. It did not take long at all for Mr. George Webster of St Rita’s Council in Ft. Worth to respond; we made contact and he was morethan accommodating. After some minor assembly, I was amazed how simple the whole process was. What a great job Supreme has donechoosing this particular model of chair. To see the sincere joy on these gentlemen’s faces as well as their appreciation, was truly a blessing. Both could not say enough about how much more comfortable these chairs are compared to other models they had previously used. Thishas been a learning experience for me and I’d like to say, Thank you for making the situations, daily activities, and lives easier for thesemen. The entire process was definitely a group effort. As Knights, we come together for the benefit of those whom we come in contact with.Go KNIGHTS!!!SK Jared LopezCouncil 6269Arlington, TexasPic1: Brother Knight R. TorresPic2: D. Jefferson
