GUIDANCE FOR WEDDINGS AND FUNERALSOverviewedChief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) Order 25-2020 requires businesses and entities to: implement practices to minimize the risk of transmission of infection among attendees; provide procedures for rapid response if an attendee develops symptoms of illness; ensure that attendees maintain high levels of sanitation and personal hygiene; comply, to the extent possible, with any applicable Alberta Health guidance found at:alberta.ca/biz-connect.aspx.rsedWhere any part of this guidance is inconsistent or in conflict with enhanced or stronger public healthrestrictions set out in another CMOH Order, the enhanced or stronger public health measures wouldprevail. Operators/organizers are also required to follow the General Operational Guidance and anyother applicable CMOH orders.This document has been developed to support planners/operators/organizers of wedding ceremoniesand funeral services, in reducing the risk of transmission of COVID-19 among attendees (includingcouples, family, friends, other invited guests, officiants, event staff, facility staff, volunteers, and thegeneral public). The guidance provided outlines public health and infection prevention and controlrequirements specific to these settings and activities.This guidance document describes the difference in restrictions for high case regions and low caseregions:High case regions are those that have had an active case rate of 50 cases per 100,000 peopleand 30 or more active cases, at any point while Orders 19-2021 and 20-2021 are in effect.pe Please refer to the COVID-19 Regional Active Cases map to determine if your region has high caserestrictions or low case restrictions in effect.In all settings, it is important that measures are implemented to reduce the risk of transmission ofCOVID-19. They can also occur in certain venues that areotherwise closed to public access, including community halls, concert halls,banquet halls, conference centres, and hotel meeting rooms.o All venues must follow the General Operational Guidance.All participants, including attendees, staff and officiants, must wear masks inall indoor public areas and workplaces in the wedding or funeral venue.All participants, including attendees, staff and officiants, must wear masks inall indoor public areas and workplaces in the wedding or funeral venue.For attendees who are at greater risk of severe disease, including peopleover 65 years of age and people with chronic medical conditions, theoperator/organizer should consider providing options for virtual attendance.Operators should place hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol inconvenient locations throughout the venue.Operators must remind attendees to check themselves for symptoms usingthe Alberta Health Daily Checklist before attending the ceremony or service.Operators must have plans for a rapid response if an attendee becomessymptomatic while at the event location. GUIDANCE FOR WEDDINGS AND FUNERALS Preparing theDeceased PhysicalDistancingPeople who have died from COVID-19 may be buried or cremated.Operators/organizers must minimize the opportunities for non-licensedpersons such as religious or cultural groups, family or friends, to handle thebody, especially in cases where the deceased person is a known orsuspected case of COVID-19.For more information on best practices for funeral homes and otherprofessionals that will be handling and preparing the body, review AlbertaHealth Service’s COVID-19 Public Health Recommendations for Handling ofDeceased Persons.pe Where possible, operators/organizers must minimize or avoid the use ofpallbearers.If pallbearing is required or specifically requested by the family orcommunity, operators/organizers must ensure that pallbearers:o mask at all times while pallbearing;o maintain 2 metres’ physical distancing from all other individuals;o minimize the distance traveled to avoid exertion and heavy breathing;o wash or sanitize hands immediately after handling surfaces.If the family determines that touching the deceased is an essential part ofthe funeral or bereavement event, it can be permitted as long as theoperator or funeral organizer:o Provides hand sanitizer or soap and running, potable water;o Prevents individuals from kissing, or pressing their faces to thedeceased, their clothing, or the coffin; ando Instructs attendees to wash or sanitize their hands thoroughly aftertouching the deceased, their clothing, or the coffin.ed rsedPallbearing andHandling theDeceased Operators must make adjustments to the venue/location to facilitatephysical distancing of at least 2 meters between staff, volunteers, andattendees at all times.If a procession is required, operators and organizers must ensure that itproceeds in one direction only, and that 2 metres distance is maintainedbetween all participants from different households.Although it is natural to want to come together at these events,operators/organizers must ask attendees not to hug or touch people whoare not part of their household.Operators/organizers must ensure that religious or spiritual rituals thatinvolve physical contact between individuals are postponed or performed ina way that does not involve physical contact.SuView the current version of this publication at rmation-guidance-weddings-and-funeralsCOVID-19 INFORMATION Touching SharedItems Attendees must not to pass items between them (e.g. tissues, gifts, orbelongings), unless it is between members of the same household.4alberta.ca/BizConnect 2021 Government of Alberta Updated: May 2021

Attendees bringing gifts, cards, money, or other items must not hand themdirectly to the recipients, family, or staff as this could prevent physicaldistancing. Alternatives include:o Designating an area for attendees to place items and donations.- Minimize the handling of items and donations for the first 24hours.
