[ From the Secretary ]FROM THESecretaryKimberly Sullivansecretary@alafl.orgWelcome to our new program year, 2015-2016! We have had many questions about membership,so I’ll try to answer the most common questions here.Q: When will Department start processing 2016 renewals?A: July 1, 2015Q: When will we be able to send in new members for 2016?A: September 1, 2015. However, do NOT hold an application for more than 20 days. If you receive it prior to August 11, it will count as a 2015 new application.Q: Can we still renew for 2015?A: Absolutely, any time! And you can pay back year dues as well.Q: What are our membership goals for 2016?A: National set goals for each Unit. These can be found on the membership page under programsat www.alafl.org.Q: If one of our Unit’s members renews online, how and when will we be notified and paid?A: National is creating an ALAMIS report for Units to pull that will tell you who paid online, andwhen. Units could run this report as often as they wish. If your Unit is not an ALAMIS user, Istrongly recommend you become one. The schedule for paying Units is still in the works, butwe should hear something in August. As of 7/28/15, only 8 members from Florida have paidrenewals online. A few more unsuccessfully tried, but typed in wrong zip codes, used cardsother than MasterCard or VISA, or did not have money available to spend on the card.Q: How can I get my 2016 membership cards?A: Several Units have still not yet done at least one of the following: completed a valid 20152016 officer list; paid poppy proceeds; cleared invoices; and/or paid their membership notice. If you do not have your cards, simply call your District President, or Department to find outwhat you owe for us to release your cards. (applies to Units: 11, 26, 29, 76, 78, 99, 118, 147,168, 194, 199, 204, 209, 213, 215, 221, 258, 287, 293, 296, 299, 358, and 375)As always, call the office with any questions. See you at Workshop, August 14-16!— Kimberly Sullivan,Department Secretary-Treasurer3The Family Tree[ AUGUST 2015 ]

[ From Education]Think outside the box:Ways Units can helptheir local schoolsBy Eleanor Amatoeducation@alafl.orgSchool bells ringing, children singing, it’sback to school again! This is the time wheneveryone takes theopportunity of salesfor school supplies.Caution! Check withschools first.Last year I concentrated on our Educationprogram and when Icontacted schools theyadvised me that someof the supplies theyreceived they could notuse. The crayons fromthe Dollar Tree do notwork. The teachersthrow them away. Theyprefer Crayola. The traditional backpacks cannot be usedin some ElementarySchools. They needto use the drawstringtype. They also saidthey get a bit of supplies from corporationsin the area. I am notsaying that they do notneed the supplies, I amjust saying check withthe schools before youspend the money. We will still be doing10 for Education. Thisis sanction from National. Ask the schoolclinic if they can useanything; you will besurprised. One day a8The Family Treeboy came to schoolwithout shoes. Whenthe teacher asked wherehis shoes were, He replied “they hurt”. Thecounselor took him toPayless and bought hima pair of shoes with herown money. When my unit heardof this, we purchasedshoes in various sizesand delivered to twoelementary schools. Ifyou are going to givea gift card, give it to astore that sells shoesonly in the event theparent wants to buysomething other thanthe shoes. What I’m asking is“Think outside thebox”. We can help in somany ways. Please documentwhat you do for theschool that is different.I would like to hearabout it. I will try tokeep you informed asto what is happeningaround. Thanks for all you doand God bless you.For God and Country,Eleanor Amato,— EducationChairman,Department ofFloridaCalendar ofEventsEVENTDATEWorkshopAug 14-16National ConventionAug 28-Sept 3Begin Accepting2016 New MembersSept 1National Day ofRemembranceSept 11District 1 School ofInstructionSept 12District 6 School ofInstructionSept 12District 12 School ofInstructionSept 12Membership RenewalNotices SentSept 15POW/MIARecognition DaySept 18District 2 School ofInstructionSept 19District 5 School ofInstructionSept 19Fall ConferenceNov 13-15For more information onupcoming events, visit ourwebsite at:www.alafl.org, under Events.

[ From National]Same-gender spouses noweligible for ALA membershipMary “Dubbie” Bucklerdbuckler@alaforveterans.orgOn June 26, 2015, theUnites States SupremeCourt issued a landmarkdecision in the case ofObergefell v. Hodges. The Court’s ruling requires a State to licensea marriage between twopeople of the same sexand to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex whentheir marriage was lawfully licensed and performedout-of-State.Because of the recentSupreme Court decision mandating thatall states legally recognize same-sex marriages, I am receivingmany questions askinghow this ruling affectsmembership eligibilityof same-gender spousesof female Legionnaires. In a female same-gender marriage, if one ofthe female spouses is amember of The American Legion (or who iseligible for membership in The AmericanLegion and becomes amember of The American Legion, same as themembership requirement for any spouseof a wartime veteran9The Family Treemeeting the Legion’seligibility criteria), thenthe other female spouseis eligible for membership in the Auxiliary.Thematterofsame-gender spousesand membership eligibility is addressed in theALA Dept OperationsGuide. Even prior to therecent Supreme Courtruling on the universallegality of same-gender marriages, if asame-gender marriagewas allowed in the statein which the departmentis incorporated, then thefemale spouse of the female veteran who is amember of The American Legion was andis eligible to become amember of the American Legion Auxiliary. If the couple moved toa state where same-gender marriages had notbeen recognized, theystill remained membersof the Legion and Auxiliary provided they remain members in goodstanding (paying theirdues current or not being removed for disciplinary reasons). Theirmembership could nothave been revoked because they joined theLegion and /or Auxiliary in a state that recognized same-gender marriage and then moved toa state that that did not.The 6/26/15 SupremeCourt decision requiresall states to recognizesame-gender marriages, so the informationin the ALA DepartmentOperations Guide willbe updated to reflect thatsame-gender marriagesmust now be recognizedin all states, and that theLegion and ALA willcontinue to accept intomembership those individuals who meet membership eligibility criteria regardless of thegender of their spouses. The Auxiliary is incorporated as an all-femaleorganization; males arenot eligible for membership. The recent Supreme Court ruling begets the question alsonow being asked bysome about the eligibility of individuals undergoing medical/surgical changes to becomephysiological females.Gender is determined[ AUGUST 2015 ]by the gender specifiedon the person’s driver’s license or otherlegal document verifying gender at the timethe ALA applicant’smembership eligibilityis determined. A person’sgender-specific physical body partsdetermine gender. Ifthe person has not undergone the completesex-changemedical/surgical transformationand there are no officialdocuments attesting theperson’s gender at thetime of application, thenthe person is not yet eligible for membership. The person becomeseligible for membership at such time as thegender transformationis completed and, other ALA membershipeligibility criteria having been met, the person can produce documentationattestingthat the person is legally classified a female.—Mary “Dubbie”Buckler, ALA National Executive Director National Secretary
