General InformationMost states will use a multiple choice CDL test format. This meansyou will be given a question followed by several possible answers.Usually there will be three choices. You are to choose one answerand mark the space.Some states will have additional state laws that pertain to theirparticular state. Check with your state to see if this applies tothem. If so, you must obtain a copy of the State Handbook fromthe nearest DMV office and study this material until you are familiarwith it.Getting Your CDLWhen you apply for your CDL, you must show proof of your identity,social security number and residency. You must provide your mostrecent medical examiner's certificate. You are required to hold a CDLinstruction permit a minimum of 30 days or show successfulcompletion of a DMV or Department of Education approved CDL drivereducation course.If you already have a driver's license, you can use it as proof of youridentity, social security number and residency.If you do not have a driver's license, you generally must provide thefollowing:1. 2 proof of identity documents, such as a driver's license, birthcertificate, government issued photo identification card, CDLinstruction permit, unexpired U.S. military identification card orU.S. military discharge papers. You must provide original orduplicate documents. Photocopies will not be accepted.2. 1 proof of your social security number, such as your socialsecurity card, IRS W-2 form, payroll check or check stub,unexpired U.S. Military identification card or income tax returnfrom a previous year. Medical forms are available at any DMV office. All driversmust certify that they are in compliance with the federal or Statemotor carrier safety regulations or that they do not have to complywith them. Refer to the Code of Federal Regulations for an explanationof these safety requirements.Vision StandardsTo operate commercial motor vehicles, you must have:20/40 or better vision in each eye, and140 degrees or better horizontal vision.These visual requirements must be met without the aid of a telescopiclens. Some drivers may be granted waivers from these visionrequirements. For information concerning waivers for travel intrastate, contact your local DMV. operators of emergency vehicles, such as firefighters active duty military personnel operating military vehicles operators of farm vehicles when used by farmers used to move farm goods, supplies or machinery to or from theirfarm not used as a common or contract motor carrier, and used within 150 miles of the farm vehicles operated by persons only for personal use, such asrecreational vehicles and rental moving vans.It's illegal for commercial drivers to have more than one license. You mustkeep the license issued by the state where you live. All other licenses mustbe returned to the states that issued them. If you fail to return licenses fromother states, you could be fined up to 5,000, put in jail for up to 90 days, orboth.CDL Age RequirementsYou must be at least 18 years of age to hold a CDL. Under federal law,you must be a commercial driver at least 21 years of age to driveacross state lines, transport hazardous materials or transportinterstate freight (e.g. mail) within the state.CDL Instruction PermitIf you want to learn to drive commercial motor vehicles, you must geta commercial driver's license instruction permit. To obtain a CDLinstruction permit, you must pass the CDL general knowledge examand the other knowledge exams for the vehicles that you want todrive. For example, if you want to learn to operate a tank vehicle anda passenger bus, you must take the general knowledge exam, the tankvehicle exam and the passenger vehicle exam. CDL ClassificationsYou need to get your CDL for the class vehicle you plan to drive plusyou may need additional endorsements.Class A Any combination of vehicles with a grosscombination weight rating of 26,001 pounds ormore if the vehicle(s) being towed have a GVWRof more than 10,000 pounds. Vehicles in this classinclude: tractor-trailer truck and trailer combinations tractor-trailer busesIf you hold a class A license and you have thecorrect endorsements, you may also operatevehicles listed in classes B and C.Class B Any single vehicle with a GVWR of26,001 pounds or more. Taking the CDL TestsAll commercial vehicle drivers (class A, B and C vehicles) must takethe general knowledge exam.
