Thelogo fulfils this need giving Direct Debit avisual identity, which helps increasefamiliarity and positive attitudes towardsDirect Debit.The Direct Debit logo is a bold portrayalof the clearest and most obvious visualelements contained in the phrase ‘DirectDebit’. Picking up the leading letter of eachword, it clearly shows a capital D and a lowercase ‘d’.4

Asa result no existing typeface exactly matchesthe lettering and so attempts to match thewording through typesetting are neitherfeasible nor acceptable.TALKING ABOUT DIRECT DEBITWhen referencing Direct Debit in eitherverbal or written form, use the full name.When written use an initial capital on eachword, so it appears like this:Direct DebitIt must not be verbally referenced toas ‘DD.’It must not be written as ‘direct debit’.

This willimprove the overall recognition of the logo.It may appear on a background colour or tintprovided it remains prominent.Where it is not possible to print the DirectDebit logo in black, it may be reproduced inone of the following ways:—— In white or pale colour (if on a darkbackground). Do not attempt to reverseout the logo yourself. When reversingout of an image, the background mustbe suitably dark and simple, to ensurelegibility of the logo. This is not permittedon a DDI.—— In the most predominant colour beingprinted – as long as the logo remainsprominent.16Do not use white logo on a DDI9COLOUR REPRODUCTION OF THE LOGO ONA DIRECT DEBIT INSTRUCTIONTo avoid any conflict of style and for the sakeof clarity, the logo should always appear in100% black on a DDI. If black is not beingprinted a predominant colour must be used.The logo may appear on a background colouror tint providing it remains prominent.Under no circumstances should the logoappear in white on a DDI. If a darkbackground is being used the logo shouldbe placed in a ‘white out’ box, ensuring theguidelines regarding the ‘exclusion zone’are followed.

However, as they varyso widely in their presentation and style,customers do not always appreciatehow simple it is to use Direct Debit as apayment method. A consistent recognisablepresentation is very important in encouragingthe use of Direct Debit and will make theprocess easier and more efficient forall concerned.The design of all DDIs must be approved inwriting by your sponsoring bank before theycan be issued.—— The standard heading ‘Instruction to yourbank or building society to pay by DirectDebit’ is mandatory—— The order of information boxes must bethe same as shown in the examples foundin the attached folders—— Clear instructions to the payer for thereturn of the form must be shown on theface of the DDI—— The maximum size is A4—— The text giving authority to debit thepayer’s account must always be printedabove the payer’s signature boxThere is a standard format for the DDI whichhas been designed to make it easy for thepayer to complete and ensure that all thedetails necessary to set up the Direct Debitare obtained. All DDIs must follow thewording and the same order as shown inthese guidelines.—— The minimum size is 110mm x 70mm. Thisshould only be used in published material,ie newspapers, journals, magazines, etc.—— The DDI must be separate from any othertext, with no additional material other thanthe official use box, appearing within theboundary of the Instruction—— For non AUDDIS service users, the DDImust be rectangular to facilitate ease ofhandling and storage—— The Direct Debit logo must appear on theform and should be positioned in the topright hand corner of the DDI above theService User’s Number (SUN)14—— Where it is a Standing Order conversation,the instruction to cancel the StandingOrder must be printed as a section at thebottom of the DDI—— The service user’s name and address mustbe pre-printed—— You may include an ‘official use box’ torecord information not applicable to thepayer’s authority for the DDI application—— The SUN must be pre-printed or stampedon the DDI—— Include an optional field to capture thesignatory’s name.
