Public Health SystemStrengtheningAs part of a vast network of forward-thinking public and privatepartners, The UPS Foundation has contributed financial supportand logistics and supply chain expertise to bolster public healthsystems and enhance response and resilience in the face ofcomplex health challenges. The UPS Foundation promotesaccess to immunization and life-saving healthcare productsthroughout the world through innovative delivery networks,thought leadership, and support for technological advancements that optimize end-to-end transport of medical supplies.Last-mile Cold Chain Vaccine Delivery in UgandaThe UPS Foundation, UPS ISMEA district and Freight in Time(FIT), in collaboration with Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance; andthe Uganda Ministry of Health launched an 18-month pilotproject in July to ensure equitable allocation of vaccines tofacilities, maintain vaccine quality during distribution, createa sustainable & timely vaccines distribution process, andimplement an end-to-end visibility system. UPS authorizedservice agent, FIT, will operate a fleet of refrigerated deliverytrucks, motorcycles, and boats that provide scheduled deliveryservice to health centers and uses a custom app to providedelivery confirmation information, previously unavailable inUganda. Throughout the delivery process, wireless temperaturesensors ensure safe storage and delivery of the sensitivecontents. The delivery network increases vaccine coverage tocommunities served by 171 health facilities across Uganda.The Rwanda Drone Delivery NetworkThe Rwanda Drone Delivery Network, the world’s first nationaldrone delivery network, was established in 2016 by The UPSFoundation, Zipline, the Rwanda Ministry of Health, and Gavi,The Vaccine Alliance. This year, the program expanded to serve12 million Rwandans throughout the country. The secondphase, Nest 2, which launched in Kayonza in 2018, includesdelivery of more than 100 additional healthcare products. Sincethe program’s launch in 2016, these life-saving drone deliveries have successfully transported more than 17,000 units ofblood and life-saving healthcare supplies and flown a total of500,000 kilometers. This project reflects not only the powerof technological innovation, but also the proven success of anew multi-sector model for implementing vital public healthinfrastructure.The UPS Foundation joins partnership withWorld Bank, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation andMerck for Mothers to improve access tolife-saving health commoditiesIn conjunction with the World Bank’s Global Financing Facility(GFF), Merck for Mothers, and the Bill & Melinda GatesFoundation, The UPS Foundation announced the launch of anew public-private partnership to improve supply chains inlow- and middle-income countries. By leveraging private sectorsupply chain management and best practices in transport,warehousing and distribution, the partnership will improveaccess to life-saving medicines and healthcare products. Theprogram will allow private companies like UPS to bring logisticsexpertise to GFF-supported governments to promote betterhealth and nutrition outcomes, particularly in women, adolescents, and children.Task Force for Global Health InfluenzaVaccine ProgramUPS provided thought leadership and cash support toPartnership for Influenza Vaccine Introduction (PIVI), a programby the Task Force for Global Health. The mission of PIVI is toincrease access to the influenza vaccine in low- and middleincome countries, which ultimately provides the programmaticinfrastructure to better administer vaccines in the case of apandemic threat. The UPS Foundation supported PIVI witha 50,000 cash grant, which allowed more than 17,000individuals to be vaccinated against influenza in Armenia,Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan. UPS Senior Vice President of HumanResources Teri McClure is chair of the organization’s board.Healthcare Necessities to Nigeria and FijiThe UPS Foundation partnered with MedShare, a nonprofit thatsources and sends surplus medical supplies to areas in need, tosend an ocean container of donated medical supplies to bothNigeria and Fiji. The supplies went to community health centersthat treat families with limited access to healthcare.STEP Health System Strengthening WorkshopAs part of an ongoing partnership with Gavi, a global healthorganization that increases access to immunization in developing countries, UPS facilitated a Strategic Training ExecutiveProgram (STEP) workshop in Nigeria. STEP is a continuouslearning project that provides tailored, needs-based trainingfocusing on strengthening supply chain management, projectmanagement, communication and problem solving skillsof public health officials. Preparedness, CapacityBuilding, and InnovationIn 2018, UPS provided loaned managers, technical assistance,and global thought leadership to expand the capacity of ourrelief partners, enabling them to better respond to humanitarian crises and operate with less business disruption.Saglam Kobi Disaster Risk Reduction toolsaccessed by 90,000 businesses in TurkeyLaunched in 2013 in the aftermath of the eastern Turkey Vanearthquakes, which caused billions in economic losses, incollaboration with the US Chamber foundation, the WorldEconomic Forum and CSR Turkey, the program celebrated itsfive-year anniversary in 2018. This public-private partnershipbolsters disaster preparedness of 90,000 small and mediumsize businesses through workshops and a suite of onlinetools designed to assess risks and take basic steps towardimproved resilience.Resilience in a BoxThe UPS Foundation expanded access to Saglam Kobi tools bycreating the Resilience in a Box Toolkit, which includes smallbusiness disaster resilience assessment tools, checklists anda business continuity planning workbook. Use of these disaster-risk-reduction materials supported local business resiliencetraining efforts in Haiti and Sri Lanka, where workshops areattended by members of the private, public, and civil sectors.The compilation helps businesses be better prepared andmore resilient in cases of humanitarian crisis. Resilience in aBox is available in French, Spanish and English, and the toolsare applicable for global use while also easily adaptable forcountry-specific adjustments to increase relevance to nationaland local economies.Connecting Business Initiative (CBi)The UPS Foundation supported Connecting Business Initiative(CBi), which mobilizes and connects international organizations,governments, civil society and the private sector to strengthensmall business capacity in disaster risk reduction, emergencypreparedness, response and recovery.Community Pandemic Preparedness ProgramThe UPS Foundation provided support for the American RedCross’s Global Disaster Preparedness Center, which worked withthe Uganda Red Cross to engage small and medium businessesto improve business continuity planning in the event of apandemic outbreak like Ebola, which resurfaced in neighboringDemocratic Republic of the Congo. Our support enabled theUganda Red Cross to do outreach to 5,000 small businesses,conduct over 30 disaster resilience workshops and providetools for small businesses to improve disaster risk reductionplanning and resilience to crises. The UPS Foundation alsofunded the development of the Atlas: Ready for Business app, atool to enhance small business preparedness and disaster riskreduction, which is available in 16 languages and helped over100 businesses to build a disaster plan in 2018.St. Bernard ProjectIn-kind transport of long-term recovery materials for:St. Bernard Project (SBP), headquartered in New Orleans, wasborn out of frustration with the inefficient and slow rebuildingprocess after Katrina, and inspiration from the determinationof residents to recover from the storm. Today, the nonprofitleverages private-sector and volunteer partners to see communities through to recovery years after disasters. In 2018, TheUPS Foundation supported SBP with cash grants and in-kindtransportation, allowing the organization to continue to restoredisaster-stricken areas, making them more resilient to disaster,and improving the lives of over 1,400 people who are recovering from disaster.Katrina: UPS delivered prefabricated wall panels for thosewhose homes were destroyed by Katrina. Mexico’s National Center to SupportEpidemiological Contingencies and Disasters(CENACED)In addition, The UPS Foundation collaborated with Mexico’sNational Center to Support Epidemiological Contingenciesand Disasters (CENACED) to develop workshops in Mexico Cityoriented toward micro, small, and medium enterprises. Theworkshops equip businesses to be better prepared to facedisaster situations and allow them to manage and reestablishoperations with less impact. The UPS Foundation also madeinvestments to expand Business Disaster Resilience support inVietnam and the Philippines.World Food Programme WorkshopThe UPS Foundation organized a workshop in Cologne,Germany, for 16 World Food Programme (WFP) executives.The workshop, which focused on WFP Non-Food Items (NFI),convened to address the challenge of not having a unified,end-to-end NFI Management IT system.Pakistan Supply Chain Workshopsfield employees in nine workshops. UPS Director of HumanResources for ISMEA, Paul Mooney, provided shared insightfrom UPS regarding best road safety practices, improvingUNHCR’s strategic approach to road safety.The UPS Foundation facilitated supply chain workshops inPakistan with multi-sector partners, providing logistics consultation to support the government’s effort to transition themanagement of the Pakistan vaccines program from thefederal level to a state-run program.“The management session changed my attitude towardroad use in a way that I feel responsible to start creating aroad safety culture in my organization.”UNICEF Visibility of Vaccines Program (ViVa)Global Fleet Management: The UPS Foundation provided acash grant and loaned expertise to facilitate capacity-buildingworkshops to improve efficiency and management ofUNHCR’s global fleet of vehicles. The workshops, a jointeffort with UNHCR partner Fleet Forum, strengthen UNHCR’scapacity to manage its fleet and its ability to quickly deliverlife-saving assistance.Funding from The UPS Foundation allowed ViVa to updatetheir existing online database platform, retrain users from 27countries and transition to the new platform, which providesnot only more specific information about the stock status ofeach vaccine, but also clear recommendations for the coldchain store manager. UPS is also funding development of avaccine stock management tool that provides dashboard viewsof vaccine inventory levels and projects low stock levels. OptimusUPS supported the implementation of Optimus, a supply chainoptimization tool, for World Food Programme (WFP). Optimususes data science to hone WFP operations by optimizing foodbasket composition, transport method, and sourcing and deliveryof contents, and by analyzing logistical constraints. To ensurea smooth implementation of Optimus, Expert on Mission JimJanetzko leveraged UPS expertise in onboarding new tools andsystems, including the training of staff. The results overwhelmingly support the powerful impact of data science and supplychain management on WFP’s complex, global operations.Optimus has been rolled out to three WFP operations, and due toits success will see a global rollout projected over 2019-2020.3 operations are currently using Optimus: Syria – increasing beneficiaries from 3.2M to 5M withoutincreasing operational cost; 3.5M current beneficiaries Ethiopia – saving 4M/month; 3.2M current beneficiaries South Sudan – projected to save 25M/year;3M current beneficiariesAward from Dutch Coalition for Humanitarian InnovationBest Humanitarian InnovationNonprofit Inventory Tracking ExpertiseThe UPS Foundation provided support in the form of cashgrants and technical expertise for the development andmaintenance of crucial inventory tracking systems forSave the Children, CARE, and the Baton Rouge Food Bank.This technology, used to track and manage inventory levels ofcommodities and donations, ensures that these nonprofitsoperate more effectively and can help more people in needthan ever before.USAIDThe UPS Foundation collaborated with USAID by identifyingcountries where UPS and USAID country managers can enhancepublic health delivery systems and disaster response.
