FAMU College of LawABOUTThe Florida A&M University (FAMU) College of Law’s rich traditionof excellence dates back to its original founding. On December21, 1949, a division of law was established at the then FloridaA&M College, and the first class was admitted in 1951. In 1966the Florida Board of Control (later known as the Board of Regents)withdrew its permission for the institution to admit law students, andtwo years later, the law school graduated its last class and closedits doors. Between 1954 and 1968, the law school graduated 57students -- men and women who have gone on to make significantcontributions to the legal profession both within the state andthroughout the nation.The 2000 Florida Legislature unanimously passed legislationestablishing a law school at FAMU and on June 14, 2000, GovernorJeb Bush signed the bill into law. The College of Law admitted itsfirst class in fall 2002 in Orlando. The degree of Juris Doctor wasconferred upon members of the first class of the reestablished lawschool on April 30, 2005 in Tallahassee, Florida.The College of Law opened at its permanent location in January2006. The 30 million building was designed by Rhodes BritoArchitects, where partners Max Brito and Ruffin Rhodes are FAMUalumni. The four-story building includes 160,000 gross square feet,has 20 classrooms and 50 faculty offices, and an elaborate MootCourt Room used for mock trials, competitions and special events.The Law Library occupies half of the space and features over300,000 volumes, one of the largest civil rights collections in theSoutheast, and volumes from the original College of Law that weregiven to Florida State University in the late 1960’s.The FAMU College of Law received full accreditation from theAmerican Bar Association in July 2009 and was re-accredited in2014. During the 2019-2020 academic year, the College of Law hasan enrollment of 563 students in its day and evening programs.

John CrossmanJohn Crossman is CEO of Crossman & Company, one of the Southeast’slargest retail leasing, management and investment sales firms, with over 28million square feet of properties in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina,North Carolina and Tennessee. In his 15 seasons in the National Football League, Smithamassed many records that still stand today, including the most careerrushing yards and the most career rushing touchdowns. Smith’s impressiveresume includes three Super Bowl championship rings and his induction intothe Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010.SpecialAs a first-round pick in the 1990 NFL Draft, Smith was the cornerstone of theDallas Cowboys offense for 13 seasons. The eight-time Pro Bowler was thefirst player in NFL history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in 11 consecutiveseasons and on October 27, 2002 he surpassed Walter Payton as the NFL’s alltime leading rusher.GUESTAfter his playing days, Smith served as a football analyst and then tookhis television career a step further when he won the third season of ABC’sDancing with the Stars, during which he was dubbed “the king of effortlesscool.” He also added author to his list of accomplishments, publishing GameOn, which outlines the principles that helped him succeed both on and offthe field.Currently, Smith has transitioned to the role of businessman and entrepreneurand runs several companies spanning real estate, construction andtechnology.
