Funerals in the Catholic ChurchThe Catholic Church sees the death of a Christian as the end of the earthly pilgrimage andthe beginning of a new and eternal life with God. The rites of the Church reflect this belief. The rites of the Church aim to assist the dead with prayers of the Church for their eternalsalvation in Jesus Christ and to aid the family and friends of the deceased in their time ofloss and sorrow with a message of hope and consolation in Jesus Christ. The focus of the Catholic Funeral Liturgy is God. The Church praises God for His goodnessand for the gifts of life and love which He bestows and are experienced by the deceased. Inthe Funeral Liturgy, the Church turns to God in faith for the reward of eternal life for thosewho believe in God and lived for God in this life. The Church also prays to God for thehealing and consolation of those who mourn. The Funeral Liturgy is an aid for both the living and dead. As we gather to pray for ourbeloved dead we are strengthened and renewed in our faith so that we can recommitourselves to loving God and living our lives in Jesus Christ. The dead are assisted by ourprayers for the forgiveness of their sins and for their entrance into eternal life with thesaints in glory. The Funeral Liturgy is closely tied with the Rites of Baptism when the promise of eternal lifein Christ is first given to those who believe. The ritual symbols of water, the paschal candle, the pall, the Word of God and the journey to the altar, all recall the journey that begins forthe Catholic in baptism. For Catholics, the normative celebration of a funeral is the Funeral Mass. The FuneralMass is always celebrated in the church. A Funeral Liturgy outside of Mass may becelebrated at the funeral home- the rite remains the same with the exception that theLiturgy of the Eucharist is omitted.Funeral Masses and Cremation, when cremation is chosen, the cremation should takeplace after the Funeral Mass, the Catholic Church prefers that the body of the deceased bepresent for the funeral Mass. If cremation is completed beforehand, a Funeral Mass can stillbe arranged.Burial of Cremated Remains* The Catholic Church does not allow for the scattering of thecremated remains of the faithful. Cremains are to be treated with the same respect as thebody. The cremains are to be interred in the ground or placed in a columbarium. Crematedremains of the faithful should never be stored or placed on a mantel or in a closet.

Funeral Visitation at Church A visitation may be held at the church Monday-Friday prior tothe funeral mass. The visitation is limited to one hour. Tribute videos, recordings are notpermitted. There is an additional visitation fee. Visitation times are not available onSaturdays.Music The primary purpose of music in any liturgy is to help people pray. Music plays animportant part in the funeral liturgy and adds great beauty and solemnity to the prayers ofthe Church. As in the case with all Catholic liturgical assemblies, music during a funeralmass can help focus peoples’ attention on their Catholic faith by expressing hopes, beliefsand expressions of faith in a way that the spoken word cannot. The parish will provide themusician and cantor. The music chosen shall be music written for liturgy, secular music isnot permitted. The family may choose four hymns (gathering, preparation, communion, departure) and a responsorial psalm. A list of hymns and responsorial psalms will beprovided.Scripture Readings At funeral liturgies, there is a reading from the Old Testament followedby a reading from the New Testament as well as the Gospel. The family is invited to choosefrom among the designated selections of readings for the First and Second Reading. Thefamily may appoint a person to do the First and Second Reading. The Gospel is normallychosen by the Presider and is proclaimed by the priest or deacon.Remembrance After the concluding prayer of the Mass but before the Prayers ofCommendation and Farewell a family member may share words of remembrance. Only oneperson may speak, the text shall be written and the remembrance shall not exceed fiveminutes. A policy regarding remembrance is given to the family. Remembrances work verywell and may be given at the funeral home. Your funeral director will be happy to assistyou.Funeral Receptions The Church of the Incarnation will provide for registered parishmembers a Parish Center Room- if available- for the family of the deceased to hold afuneral reception following a funeral mass and graveside service during normal weekday(Monday-Friday) hours of 9-3. Use of the designated room will be limited to 2.5 hours. There will be no charge for the room. The Parish does not have a reception ministry and therefore all preparation, food serviceand cleanup is the responsibility of the family. No alcohol is permitted.

Church of the IncarnationPolicy of Giving a Remembrance of the DeceasedIt is extremely important for the person giving the remembrance to besensitive to the liturgical tone set by the ritual Order of Christian Funerals.A remembrance of the deceased is a way of placing the life of the deceasedand the present experience of loss within the context of faith. How was thedeceased’s life an imitation of Christ? How was he/she a person of sharinghealing, helping, feeding, building, teaching, etc.?There are definite religious/ theological themes that permeate funerals. Theseare evident in the prayers of the Mass and in the readings from Scripture. What can be said about how God worked in the life of the deceased? How didthe deceased share a unique, holy life with family, friends, church, andcommunity? The remembrance is an opportunity to deepen the assembly’s faith. Whatcan be said about the deceased that helps or encourages the assembly?Keep in mind that you are participating in the sacred funeral rites of theChurch and the sacred funeral rites of a relative or friend. The text of the remembrance must be written. The length of theremembrance shall not exceed 5 minutes and be delivered by one person. The text of the remembrance must be approved by the Priest or hisdelegate. This policy is not meant to squelch remembrances but past experience hastaught that remembrances are the “wild card” most prone to disaster, withsome rambling, some nearly unintelligible and others making extremelyinappropriate remarks and comments(words, slurs)-things that totallydestroy all that has just occurred in the sacred liturgy. If the speaker has torequest ‘pardon’ from the priest before making a statement- that statementis best left unsaid. All of these cases have indeed happened in the past, andnobody wants them to happen to you.*Remembrances may be given at the Funeral Home. The funeral director willassist you is arranging a time during the visitation to accomplish this goal.

Old Testament ReadingEcclesiastes 3:1-8,11, 14A reading from the Book of Ecclesiastes,Everything has its time. There is an appointedtime for everything and a time for every affairunder the heavens.A time to be born and a time to die,A time to plant and a time to uproot the plant,A time to kill and a time to heal,A time to tear down and a time to build,A time to weep and a time to laugh,A time to mourn and a time to dance,A time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,A time to embrace and a time to be far fromembraces,A time to seek and a time to lose,A time to keep and a time to cast away,A time to rend and a time to sew,A time to be silent and a time to speak,A time to love and a time to hate,A time of war and a time of peace,He has made everything suitable for its time.I know whatever God does endures forever;nothing can be added to it, nor anything takenfrom it.The Word of the Lord

Old Testament ReadingEzekiel 34:11-14, 15-16A reading from the Book of Ezekiel,For thus say the Lord God: I myself will look afterand tend my sheep. As a shepherd tends his flockwhen he finds himself among his scattered sheep,so will I tend my sheep.I will rescue them from every place where theywere scattered when it was cloudy and dark. I willlead them out from among the peoples and gatherthem from foreign land; I will bring them back totheir own country and pasture them upon themountains.I myself will pasture my sheep; I myself will givethem rest. The lost I will seek out, the strayed, Iwill bring back, the injured, I will bind up, the sick,I will heal. The Word of the Lord

Old Testament ReadingIsaiah 25: 6a,7-9A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah,On this mountain the Lord of hosts will providefor all people. On this mountain he will destroy theveil that veils all people, the web that is wovenover all nations; he will destroy death forever. The Lord God will wipe away the tears from allfaces; the reproach of his people he will removefrom the whole earth; for the Lord has spoken. On that day it will be said: “Behold our God, towhom we looked to save us! This is the Lord forwhom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad thathe has saved us!”The Word of the Lord

Old Testament ReadingIsaiah 40:28-31A reading from the prophet Isaiah,The Lord is an everlasting God. He created theboundaries of the earth. He does not grow tired orweary, his understanding is beyond allcomprehension. He gives strength to the wearied, he strengthensthe powerless. Young people may grow tired andweary, and youths may stumble, but those whohope in the Lord renew their strength, they put outwings like eagles. They run and do not grow weary, walk and never tire. The Word of the Lord

Old Testament ReadingIsaiah 60:1-2, 16, 19-20A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah,Rise up in splendor!Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines uponyou.See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds coverthe peoples; but upon you the Lord shines and over youappears his glory. You shall know that I, the Lord, am your Savior, yourRedeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob. No longer shall the sun be your light by day,nor thebrightness of the moon shine upon you at night. The Lord shall be your light forever your God shall beyour glory. No longer shall your sun go down or your moonwithdraw for the Lord will be your light forever, andthe days of your mourning shall be at an end.The Word of the Lord

Old Testament ReadingLamentations 3: 23-26A reading from the Book of Lamentations,The favors of the Lord are not exhausted, hismercies are not spent; they are renewed eachmorning, so great is his faithfulness. My portion is the Lord, says my soul; thereforewill I hope in him. The Lord is good to those thatwait for him, to the soul that seeks him.It is good that one should wait quietly for thesalvation of the Lord. The Word of the Lord

Old Testament Reading Proverbs 31:10-15, 19-20, 25-28A Reading from the Book of ProverbsWhen one finds a worthy wife, her value is beyond pearls. Her husband, entrusting his heart to her, has anunfailing prize. She brings him good, and not evil all the days of herlife. She enjoys the success of her dealings, and she workswith loving hands -at night her lamp is undimmed. She reaches out her hands to the poor, and extends herarms to the needy. She is clothed with strength and dignity, and shelaughs at the days to come. She opens her mouth in wisdom, on her tongue iskindly counsel. She watches the conduct of her household, and she eatsnot her food in idleness. Her children rise up and praise her; her husband, too, extols her;“Many are the women of proven worth, but you haveexcelled them all.”Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting; the womanwho fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her a rewardof her labors, and let her works praise her at the citygates. The Word of the Lord

Old Testament ReadingWisdom 3: 1-6, 9A reading from the Book of Wisdom,The souls of the just are in the hand of God and notorment shall touch them. They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead;and their passing away was thought an afflictionand their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace. For if in the eyes of men, indeed they be punished, yet is their hope full of immortality; chastised alittle, they shall be greatly blessed, because Godtried them, and found them worthy of himself. As gold in the furnace, he proved them, and assacrificial offerings he took them to himself. Those who trust in him shall understand truth, and the faithful shall abide with him in love;because grace and mercy are with his holy ones, and his care is with his elect. The Word of the Lord

Old Testament ReadingWisdom 4: 7-10, 13A Reading from the Book of Wisdom,The virtuous, though they die early, will be at rest. For the age that is honorable comes not from thepassing of time, nor can it be measured in terms ofyears.Rather, understanding is the crown for anyoneand a blameless life is the attainment of old age. There were some who pleased God and were lovedby him and while living among sinners were takenup.Being perfected in a short time, they fulfilled longyears; for their souls were pleasing to the Lord. The Word of the Lord

New Testament ReadingRomans 6: 3-4, 8-9A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans,Brothers and sisters:Are you unaware that we who were baptized intoChrist Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptisminto death, so that, just as Christ was raised fromthe dead by the glory of the Father, we too mightlive in newness of life. If, then, we have died with Christ,we believe that we shall also live with him.We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies nomore; death no longer has power over him.The Word of the Lord

New Testament ReadingRomans 14: 7-12A Reading from Paul’s letter to the Romans:Brothers and sisters:None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself. For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we diefor the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are theLord’s.For this is why Christ died and came to life, that hemight be Lord of both the dead and the living. Why then do you judge your brother or sister?Or you, why do you look down on your brother orsister? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God;for it is written:“As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bendbefore me, and every tongue shall give praise to God.”So then each of us shall give an accounting of himselfto God.The Word of the Lord

New Testament Reading2 Corinthians 4:14- 5:1A Reading from Paul’s Second Letter to theCorinthians,Brothers and sisters:knowing that the One who raised the Lord Jesus willraise us also with Jesus and place us with you in hispresence.Everything indeed is for you,so that the grace bestowed in abundance on more andmore people may cause the thanksgiving to overflowfor the glory of God.Therefore, we are not discouraged;rather, although our outer self is wasting away, ourinner self is being renewed day by day.For this momentary light affliction is producing for usan eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as welook not to what is seen but to what is unseen; for whatis seen is transitory, but what is unseen is eternal. For we know that if our earthly dwelling, a tent, shouldbe destroyed, we have a building from God, a dwellingnot made with hands, eternal in heaven. The Word of the Lord

New Testament Reading2Corinthians 5:1, 6-10A reading from Paul’s second letter to theCorinthians,Brothers and sisters:We know that if our earthly dwelling, a tent, should be destroyed, we have a building from God,a dwelling not made with hands, eternal inheaven. So we are courageous, although we know thatwhile we are at home in the body we are awayfrom the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight.Yet, we are courageous, and we would rather leavethe body and go home to the Lord. Therefore, weaspire to please him whether we are at home oraway. For we must all appear before Christ, so that eachone may receive recompense, according to what hedid in the body, whether good or evil. The Word of the Lord

New Testament Reading2 Timothy 4: 6-8, 17-18A reading from Paul’s second letter to Timothy,As for me, my life is already poured away as alibation, and the time has come for me to be gone.I have fought the good fight to the end;I have run the race to the finish;I have kept the faith; All there is to come now is the crown ofrighteousness reserved for me, which the Lord, therighteous judge shall give to me on that day; andnot only to me but to all who have longed for hisappearing. The Lord stood by my side and gave me strength. The Lord will continue to rescue me from allattempts to do me harm and bring me safe to hisheavenly kingdom. The Word of the Lord

New Testament ReadingRevelation 21:1-5, 6-7A reading from the Book of Revelation,I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The formerheaven and the former earth had passed away andthe sea was no more. I also saw the holy city, a newJerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,“Behold God’s dwelling is with the humanrace. He will dwell with them and they will be hispeople and God himself will always be with themas their God. He will wipe every tear from theireyes, and there shall be no more death ormourning, wailing or pain, for the old order haspassed away.”The one who sat on the throne said, “Behold, Imake all things new. I am the Alpha and theOmega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty Iwill give a gift from the spring of life-giving water. The victor will inherit these gifts and I shall be hisGod.”The Word of the Lord

New Testament ReadingRevelation 14:13A Reading from the Book of Revelation,I, John, heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this:Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.”“Yes,” said the Spirit, “let them find rest from theirlabors, for their works accompany them.”The Word of the Lord
