CATHOLIC CORNERHave you ever wondered why our Lord used ordinary Bread and Wine in the Sacrament of the Eucharist and not Rice and Water? At first glance this may seem like a funny question, but the answer is deeperthan we may think, and the answer may surprise you.First it is because no two substances in nature better symbolize unity thanbread and wine. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) #1333 reads in part, “fruit of the earth, work of human hands,”but above all as “fruit of the earth” and of the vine – gifts of the Creator. So, we have “fruit of the earth” from God’s bountiful gifts and blessings bestowed on humanity, but He needs mankind toparticipate (to be in communion in the preparation) of his free will and labor. Our Lord asks us to be in communion even inthe labor, to make something from his “fruits.” There is no such thing as a bread tree, nor does wine springing up from theground. Both substances need human participation in real hard labor to become bread and wine.Have you ever had your children approach you for money to buy you a gift? The chances are, you gave your children money to buy you a gift, but why? Because we want to see our children’s participation in the effort to shop for the gift and theexpression of love in what the gift means to us, but we do not shop for them and purchase it for them, it must be freewill.Well, our Lord wants the same thing by providing the bountiful gifts. However, he wants to see the labor and expression oflove in the long laborious process of planting the vine, watering it for many years, nurturing the vine, eventually harvestingthe vine and crushing grapes in a process that requires us waiting for natural law to transform and ferment the grape juiceinto wine. The same with the wheat that starts at tilling the soil, planting the seed, watering, nurturing, passing through therigors of winter, until eventual harvest. Once harvested, the labor of separating the kernel and germ from the chaff, grindingit into a fine powder, mixing it with water, then adding leaven (yeast) waiting again for nature to transform and expand thedough, then the wood for the fire in the oven and the eventual baking into bread. Our Lord asks for OUR love labor and participation (“work of human hands”), in cooperation with His will, to become the substance for the Holy Sacrifice. If it was just Rice and Water, very little if any human intervention would be necessary. Godrelies on our cooperation of our will with His will (in communion) to have the substance for the Sacrifice, but also, in order toreceive, our complete will in a state of grace (without sin) to receive the Holy Eucharist at Mass.Want to learn more: and-wine/Catechism of the Catholic Church: / Or in print CCC Article 3 #1322 to #1405COMMUNITY EVENTSMOTHER-SON DATE NIGHT - The Spring Branch Bulverde Lions Club invites you to asemi-formal Mother-Son dinner and dance on Saturday, May 18 at the Bulverde CommunityCenter.
