The club was open to the well-off men ofHaverhill who tended to be older. The Agawam Club would latermerge with the Pentucket Club in 1929.Organizational HistoryThe Pentucket Club was a social club for men, specifically gentlemen of Haverhill. It wasfounded on March 21, 1889 according to the Massachusetts Secretary of State corporate cardfile database. The Club originally met at the Masonic building before moving to the Bannisterbuilding, which was located at the corner of Merrimac and Bridget Street. Later they wouldmove to their final location the Duncan Mansion in 18; it was located at the corner of Main andSummer Streets. The Ballroom that was located at the rear of the building was added after theClub had taken over house in the 1880s.The Duncan Mansion was originally built for Moses B. Moody and the architect was JohnHaviland. When the Pentucket Club bought the property, they added an addition where the oldstables had been, installing bowling alleys, and billiard rooms. The Billiard room was largeenough to have eight tables. Also, inside there was a grand staircase that was added that wentto the auditorium. In the auditorium was a grand room that could be used for assemblies,banquets and various kinds of entertainment and shows. In addition, there was a receptionparlors and committee meeting rooms. Within the main building there where bedrooms thatwere used for times when members had troubles at home. Not much is known about thelibrary and the books that were contained in it. After the additions the Pentucket Club held itsgrand opening on February 23, 1895.

Collection Title, Collection Number2The Pentucket Club continued to exist into the 20 th century. In October of 1929 the AgawamClub would finally merge with the Pentucket Club. Herbert S. Baily, the president of theAgawam Club started a committee to close the affairs of the club and work fully integrate withthe Pentucket Club. In May of 1963 the Pentucket Club voted to sell the property to JamesVasilakis of Atkinson, New Hampshire. Vasilakis, at the time, was the owner of the LakeviewResaurant on Amesbury Road, near Kenoza Lake. The Club finally underwent dissolution ofcorporation on August 26, 1970 under Chapter 180, Section 26A of Mass General Law. The lastof the mail was sent to Kenneth R. Johnson, who was the secretary of the club, at 50 Mt.Vernon Street in Haverhill. After the Pentucket Club had ended the building was turned into atwenty unit hotel; the name of the hotel was called the Hotel Bartlett.
