We currentlyhave a Board of 12,made up of 4independentmembers, 4 residentmembers, 2 localauthority nomineesand 2 co-optedmembers.Recently there have beenproblems with some housingassociations getting into troublebecause their Boards do nothave the skills to manage multimillion pound businesses. As aresult we have to comply withmore stringent governancerequirements. Board membersmust now be appointed on thebasis of their particular skill andoverall board size is gettingsmaller. In order to be best placed toprotect our business, we areproposing a Board of 9members, where everyone isappointed for a skill rather thanbecause they are a B3Livingresident or local authoritynominee. We want to consult with you,our residents, as this is a majorchange to our constitution. Itwill mean that we no longerhave 4 places on the Board justfor residents – although wehope that residents with theright skills will still apply whenvacancies arise and indeed wehave identified that among theskills required will be knowledgeof the local community and/orbeing or having been a socialhousing tenant. We hope toachieve the move to 9members and a more strategicBoard by September 2017.If we do not make thesechanges, we run the risk of ourgovernance rating beingdowngraded by the Homesand Communities Agency, theGovernment body set up toregulate our business. This couldhave serious consequences inthe future; for example if wewanted to borrow more money. There is also a chance that wewould be made to merge withanother association, whichwould mean less of a localpresence for residents; the verything we are determined toprotect.Stewart Heath, a member ofthe B3Living Board, said: “I thinkthis is a very positive moveforward for B3Living and it isimportant that the Board hasthe right set of skills. Byappointing on a skills basis weshould be able to deal with anyissues we’re faced with in thefuture. I would strongly advisethat residents apply to becomemembers on the Board and forthem to remember that they willbe treated as equals.”Our Board is putting forwardthese changes, which aresupported by BroxbourneBorough Council.
