The club’s year ofestablishment in 1909 is foundin Nisbet’s Golf Year Book for1911 (see cutting below). Atthat time the membership isstated as 500 and the bestamateur score on the coursewas 5 over the course par. TheClub secretary of the time,George Chambers, commentsthat the club’s aim is to“provide moderate golf at amoderate price”. Thistradition of non-elitist golfcontinues 100 years later atthe club and is somethingBrent Valley can be rightlyproud of. Today, however, weallow ladies to play the courseat the weekends, and theobligatory use of caddies onSundays was relaxed some timeago! The course has a proudheritage, having been designedby 5-times Open winner JHTaylor (pictured left on acigarette card from the time),who was also the architect ofRoyal Birkdale. With the support of itsmembers, we look forward tothe next 100 years of a greatclub! No ladies at the weekends please and caddies required on a Sunday!PAGE 1

BRENT VALLEY’S FOUNDING FATHER: ALBERT TOLEYAlbert Toley was Brent Valley Golf Club’s founderand first President, in 1909. He moved to Hanwellin 1906 and lived in The Grove, which was locatedon the eastern side of Brent Valley Golf Course.Albert was a public benefactor and aproperty entrepreneur. Born in 1855in Devon, Toley came to London asa teacher at the United WestminsterSchool near Victoria Station aged 17.In 1876 he took over the school’ssports and found that the schoollacked playing fields. He had theidea of renting land, in Willesden, for the school’s games and subletting some of it to local sportsclubs. Sensing demand from otherclubs, he repeated the exercise withother land. So successful was theIn the 1800s the course was the grounds of an estate of ahouse called Hanwell Grove, comprising 29 acres of landin 1837. It is believed the course was built in 1909 whenAlbert Toley took it over and founded the club. It wasdesigned by JH Taylor, a prolific course architect of thetime and a 5-times Open winner (pictured above).venture that he gave up his teaching job andacquired other sites. At one point he wasmanaging over 1,000 acres. One of the plots ofland he acquired was later to become Brent ValleyGolf Course, where he foundedthe club. Although he managedmany other sites and foundedother clubs, Brent Valley must haveheld a special place in his heartsince he lived in The Grove, whosegrounds were near, if not formedpart of, the golf course, and he wasthe Club’s first president. Localnewspapers report him playing inmatches for Brent Valley, alongsidehis son Frank, against other localclubs with a handicap of 9 at theage of 64. Albert Toley died onSeptember 6, 1924.A cutting from the Middlesex CountyTimes of October 4, 1919, showing theresults of a match between Brent Valley and Ealing. WHAT WAS THE COURSE LIKE IN 1909?We have no records of what the course was likein 1909 but we have a good description in an articlein the Middlesex County Times of August 16, 1919.The author, “Ionball”, who is a “medium player”with a 10 handicap, describes each hole in thecompany of “Mr Scratch”. Taking his mashie(wedge), brassy (2 wood ) and baffy (4 wood),Ionball plays the course, giving tips on how totackle each hole. He gives the par (or bogey) for allthe holes and some yardages, and he also givessome clues that allow us to visualise where he is onthe course as we know it today. When he says “wecross the lane to arrive at 15”, we know he is on the4 and Ionball comments “you cannot see the flagfrom the tee”, while the 3rd hole is only 230 yards, which leads us to speculate that the tee box for the4th might have been where the green of the 3rd istoday. Another difference from the pre-1966 course“Plentifu"y distributed in flickering lightand shade are white clothed tea tablesand easy wicker chairs.”is that the 12th is described as “the prettiest hole, the church spire above the trees”, and so soundslike today’s 14th and 1966’s 10th. But we have towonder where the 10th was since it is only 210yards and the tee box would have to be near thegreen of the 9th (today’s 13th).Although we can only guess at the total yardageof the course, we know the course par was 72, iefive strokes more than today and two more than1966. The course then had four “bogey” 5s, some ofthem relatively short like the 2nd, but then playersat that time had to contend with far more treesand, from the account given by Ionball, a lot morebunkers. All this without, of course, taking intoaccount the hickory brassies and baffies!Brent Valley Golf Course: ScorecardHoleYardsBoge Hole YardsBoge(1919)sameroute that we take between the 16th and the 17th.And when he says “From the tee at No. 5 we havefor the first time to clear the Brent.” we know weare at today’s 7th. Today’s 13th is also easy to spotwhen he says “The 9th hole is tricky, as all holes arethat have a river a few yards from the tee”.From these and other clues it seems the coursefollows roughly the same pattern as it did up until1966, when it was changed to today’s layout. Butsome curiosities remain. The 4th hole is a short par1365 (e)2yy410210400 (e)511440 (e)53230412370 (e)44250 (e)4132804514031416036440 (e)51530547420 (e)41645058160 (e)317330 (e)49180 (e)318380 (e)435IN37OUT35TOTAL72OUT4PAGE 3

THE 2009 BRENT VALLEY ANNUAL DINNER DANCEOn Saturday February 23 Brent Valley Golf Clubheld its 2009 annual dinner dance, a traditionthat started exactly 99 years earlier when theclub held its first annual dinner at the Trocoderoin Hanwell (see article on page 2). Attended byover 100 guests at the clubhouse of the WestMiddlesex Golf Club, the evening went with aswing and finished in the small hours. In the Captain’s speech, John Antunes hailedSporting Lisbon’s win over local rivals Benficabefore turning to a sport closer to home in westLondon. Apologising in advance for hisspeech because, he said, his preparation had been interupted by FrankieBurke calling him out to fix a fortyyear old tap. John didn’t seem to beshort on content though as he thenwent on to tell the story of his introduction to golf following an England vIreland v Rest of the World match andhis friendship with Danny O’Neil. Verymuch accustomed now to public speaking, John rectified what was perhaps asmall faux pas in a previous speechwhen he said becoming Brent ValleyCaptain had been the proudest moment in his life. It now ranked number4 after his wedding day and the birthof his two daughters. The mic waseventually wrestled from him by Presi-dent MJ Murphy who said grace so that everyonecould get stuck into a delicious carvery meal.Prizes donated by committee members for theraffle were distributed to winners - some people(eg Jim Chalmers) won more than one prize, while some tables (eg Josie Keanan’s) seemed towait forever before a prize came their way. Various football themed prizes were on offer beforethe draw began. The deluxe set of Luton Towngolfing accessories was of course oneof the first prizes to go. A signedBrentford shirt was one of the last tobe taken up, soon after the M&Sshortbread selection. Fortunatelythere was no Barnet FC merchandiseon offer. As the music began, guests jitterbugged to the sounds of the 50s,jived to some 60s blasts from thepast and grooved their way throughsome 70s disco classics. The 80sdidn’t figure in any of the guests’dancing repertoires.Profits from the evening went to theCaptain’s charity, the Alzeimer’s Society. For more photos of the event, see the ye"ow clubphoto album in the club house.PAGE 5
