January 2020From the Deacon’s BenchAfter the 12 days of Christmas, we celebrate the Epiphany of our Lord. We remember those Wise Menwho came to worship the baby Jesus. I’m always amazed by this story, aren’tyou? We don’t know too much about these men. It’s amazing to me that they couldsee that star in the sky and know that it signaled the coming of God into theworld. It’s also amazing to me that they would then follow that star, and that theywould believe that at the end of their journey they would find the newly born Jesusliving under the light of that star. Finally, it is amazing to me that these men, whowere not Jewish, would fall down and worship this little boy named Jesus. The firstthing that they did was to worship him.On the night that Jesus was born, shepherds who were considered outcasts because they did the uncleanjob of tending sheep, were the first people to fall down and worship the baby Jesus; and today we’rereminded that the next group of people to worship him were also outcasts because they were gentiles, notJews. If the Gospels writers want us to know anything, they want us to know that Jesus was born foreveryone. God came into our world for people of every class and people of every culture and people ofevery race. No wonder the Wise Men worshiped Jesus. The Wise Men were not afraid to tell people what they believed. They told King Herod that the Messiahhad been born. Even before seeing Jesus, they knew who he was. We need to be the ones to revealGod’s presence and power, and God’s love and forgiveness to all the world. It could be so easy to keep our faith a private matter; but the Wise Men have shown us the joy thatcomes from worshiping God and believing in God.So, as we begin this New Year let me just suggest that we all make a resolution to reveal the love ofGod! Take the time to tell your children and even your friends WHY you worship. Don’t just come tochurch because your family came, don’t just come because it’s tradition, come because you know thestory and you want to worship the God of the story; and then go into the world to share that joyous storybecause it’s a great story!!Christ the Lord is born! Worship him, give praise to him and be filled with the joy of Christmas throughoutthe year.In Grace and Peace, Deacon Dan 1
