Page ThreeFebruary 22, 2015A M ESSAGEFROMF R . M I K E P O N TA R E L L I , O . S . M .Some weeks ago this writing was about the Mass. I am returning to that theme today. I left off just atthe beginning of the Eucharistic Prayer. This Great Prayer of the Mass begins with a dialogue whichis quite familiar; it is recited or sung almost without second thought – or even first! We can do it inour sleep. The Lord be with you Lift up your hearts Let us give thanks to the Lord our God This prayer includes and involves each of us. You, as a community, have a part in the dialogue. Welift up our hearts, it is right for us to give thanks and praise. Why not do it with voices that soundlifted up and filled with praise and thanks-giving? Whether in song or recitation, this is an act ofpraising God.Together we say or sing the Sanctus, “Holy, Holy” – the Memorial Acclamation after the account of the Last supper –together we affirm our prayer as we conclude it with the Great Amen. These responses belong to all of us. Together weare united in our prayer to God our Father.Listen to the words of the Eucharistic Prayer; make them your own prayer by responding to the prayer by truly liftingup your hearts and minds. Respond to the prayer by doing what it asks; give God thanks and praise. Give God thanksand praise by doing what these prayers ask of you; remember what God has done, celebrate what He continues to do,believe that you can be the presence of God to a community that might not know Him if it weren’t for you.During this great season of Lent, I encourage you to look into the signs of the times by the light of faith and constantlydevote yourselves to the service of the Gospel. Be attentive to the needs of all. Share their grief and pain, their joy andhope, bring the people you meet the good news of salvation.Be thankful for the many graces and blessings you have received. Take a few moments each day to reflect on thoseblessings. Give God thanks, become God’s thanks-giving to other people. You will be changed so will those whomyou encounter. This Sunday, Feb. 22nd after the 9am morning Mass in the Parish Center we continue our50th Anniversary Year of celebration with a special birthdaycelebration! Some clients are unemployed; however the majorityare the “working poor” who find it difficult to make ends meet. The 40 Cans of Lent Campaign helps St. Vincent to prepare for the Easter Basket Program but also supports weekly Pantry operations. Almost every religious tradition recognizes that fasting is akey to heightened spiritual awareness. Youknow this from your own experience. Whenyou are engaged in a hobby, painting a room, keeping vigil near a delivery room, or standing watch at a sickbed, you may simply forget to eat. What youare doing so fills you that the intensity of the action is itselfnourishing. In fasting from food, or drink, or habitual behaviors, you make room for what is truly important.Even though Lenten Sundays stand apart from the Lenten fast, you will notice traces of fasting in our liturgy. We fast fromsinging the Gloria and Alleluia, we fast from flowers bedeckingthe altar. This hints that fasting is a prelude to feasting, and thevigor of our Easter alleluias is a rich fare after a long silence. Inthe same way, even a small fast—no cream in the coffee, nopepper in the soup, no radio in the car—can not only point todeeper hungers, but helpus rejoice more fully inthe feast when we breakour fast together.—Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
