PrefaceThis publication presents the structure and definitions of all occupation groups in the Botswana StandardClassification of Occupations (BOSCO). This version of BOSCO has been revised in line with ISCO-08 which hasbeen developed to facilitate international comparison of occupational statistics and to serve as a model forcountries developing or revising their national occupational classifications.ISCO -08 was adopted as a resolution of a tripartite Meeting of Experts on Labour Statistics on updating theInternational Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO). This meeting was convened by the GoverningBody of the International Labour Office (ILO) in accordance with the resolution, in 2003. The resolution of theMeeting of Experts was endorsed by the Governing Body in March 2008The first version of ISCO was adopted in 1957 by the Ninth International Conference of Labour Statisticians(ICLS). It is known as ISCO-58. This version was superseded by ISCO-68, which was adopted by the EleventhICLS in 1966. The third version, ISCO-88, was adopted by the Fourteenth ICLS in 1987.ISCO has recently been updated to take into account developments in the world of work since 1988. Theupdating did not change the basic principles and top structure of ISCO-88 but significant structural changeswere made in some areas. The updated classification was adopted in December 2007 and is known asISCO-08. Many countries are now updating their national classification either based on ISCO-08 or to improvealignment with the new international statistical standard o/).Statistics Botswana, as an organisation mandated to produce official statistics, is obliged to come up withnational classifications which are in line with the international standards hence the adaptation of the ISCO-08in drawing up the BOSCO-08. Users who might require more information may send their requirements to theorganisation.Statistics Botswana would like to acknowledge the contribution of all stakeholders such as GovernmentMinistries and Departments, Parastatal Organisations, Private Organisations and Development Partnerstowards the success of the development of this revised version.A.N. Introduction to Revision and Adaption of Botswana Standard Classification of Occupations (BOSCOBOSCO Rev 4 has been adapted from the ISCO -08. Previously Botswana was using the BOSCO Rev 3 whichwas adapted from the ISCO-88. The following are the changes that have been noticed as a result of themigration.Major changes from ISCO Rev 88 to ISCO Rev 081.BOSCO Revision 2008 has been migrated to 4-digits instead of 3-digits used in Revision 1988. Thiswas meant to conform to International standards. The advantage of migrating to Rev 4 is that it is moredetailed and disaggregated than Rev 3. It also allows for the production of relatively detailed internationallycomparable data as well as summary information. The revision is now categorized as follows:a.b.c.d.Major Group – one (1) digit codeSub Major Group – two (2) digit codeMinor Group – three (3) digit codeUnit level (actual code) – four (4) digit code2.Code 1224 under Minor Group 122 has been introduced to cater for Small Business Managers such asmanagers for Small General Dealers, Butchers, and Tuck-shops etc.3.New Sub Major Groups, 25 and 35 have been introduced (Internationally), under Professionals andTechnicians Groups respectively to cater for ‘Information and Communications Technology’. This has beenan emerging sector in the past 10 years or so.4.Sub Major Group 36, ‘Primary, Pre-Primary, Vocational and Technical Education Teachers’ is applicableto Botswana situation, thus introduced to cater for technicians in the Education sector.5Botswana Standard Classification of OccupationsStatistics Botswana
