As mentioned in chapter 6, pre-serve components includeexhaling, relaxing, deciding on the most advantageous position in which to stand, andreviewing a strategic plan based on awareness of score management and point management. Routines and rituals will be covered in depth in chapter 11.To achieve an effective return-of-serve position, the player needs to detect the range ofangles in which the opponent can successfully hit; the player then stands in the midpointof that range of attack. A secondary consideration is to identify which incoming serve iscausing problems and to “stop the bleeding.” If an opponent is receiving cheap pointsoff slice serves out wide in the deuce court, the returner should stand well inside thedoubles alley. This essentially shuts down that successful pattern of play, forcing theopponent to try the less favored serve down the center service line. This is an exampleof tactical and psychological warfare.GriPOne of the most talked about stats on the professional level is service speed. Today, proson the ATP tour serve consistently in the 130 mph range. Yet their opponents still haveplenty of time to change grips in order to accommodate their stroke. So at the meremortal level, where serves don’t frequent triple digits, there’s plenty of time to performa grip change while returning. In the ready position, two-handed players have theirdominant hand in a semi-Western forehand grip, and their nondominant hand is in anEastern grip (figure 7.1a). If they detect that an incoming serve is going to the forehandwing, they simply release the top hand as the coil process begins (figure 7.1b). However,if a serve is coming to the backhand, the top hand anchors the racket while the bottomhand slides upward two bevels to the desired Continental grip (figure 7.1c). This changeof grip happens simultaneously with the coil stage. Because the grip change takes onlymilliseconds to perform, it is seldom detected by the naked eye.abFax. 44 ( 0 ) 113 255 5885abcdYou’ll also find the most effective drills formastering groundstrokes, serves, volleysand speciality shots as well as invaluableadvice for improving anticipatory skills andrecognizing, neutralizing and counteringyour competition’s strengths.cFigure 7.1 Two-handed return-of-serve grip: (a) at the ready position; (b) against a serve to the forehand;(c) against a serve to the backhand.Coach’s CornerPlayers who have a weaker backhand can give it a little head start. To do this, theystand in the ready position with a preset backhand grip. This eliminates the “findthe grip” link in the return process.June 2013I S B N 978 1 4504 3208 575 illustrations105 photographs216 x 279 mm200 ppPaperback 13.99 / 18.20Figure 7.2 return-of-serve positioning: the returner (a) begins low, (b) rises straight up, (c)performs a split step into the court, and (d) makes contact.Tennis Steps to SuccessJim Brown and Camille SoulierMaster the essential skills, take the courtwith confidence, and ace the competition! Two basic types of synapses areelectrical and chemical, but almost all the synapses in the CNS are chemical. The actions onneurons can be excitatory and inhibitory; theseactions are produced in the brain primarilythrough two transmitter substances: glutamate(excitatory) and -aminobutyric acid (GABA;inhibitory). Other neurotransmitters (NT) donot have the information-transmitting effects ofglutamate and GABA but produce their effectson the central nervous system by modulatingcircuits of neurons involved in specific brainfunctions. They interact with signaling proteins, called G-proteins, that are found in the cellmembrane. Brain activity is thus influenced byother NT that alter the way neurons can processIn contrast to other exercise psychologytextbooks it presents a psychobiologicalapproach that examines the inner workings of the body and their effects onbehaviour. From this unique perspective, readers willlearn the biological foundations of exercisepsychology within the broader contextsof cognitive, social and environmentalinfluences.
