The Apex heritageof quality, deliveryand support. For more than half a century Apex has maintained a position of leadership in industrial fastening tools. Today,Apex stands ready to improve the productivity of assembly operations around theworld with unsurpassed tool performance and customer service. Here’s how:Highest QualityApex quality begins with select raw materials. Only carefullychosen, high grade tool steel is used. Each tool is precisionmachined from solid bar stock to close-tolerance standards. Youget an exact, sure fit – a fit not possible from tools made in aprocess that grows less precise with every stamp. Finally, eachtool is tempered with the exclusive Apex heat treating processthat lets you select the degree of hardness you require. Choosefrom tough, non-brittle durability that stands up to torque, to thehardest heat treat available for the ultimate in wear resistance.Rapid Select Means Fast DeliveryModels indicated with a Rapid Select icon represent our mostpopular tools, and are available for fast delivery on limited quantities. On bit items, the heat treat code has been added to Rapid Select partnumbers. See page vi for selecting the proper heat treat.Complete Support For Your RequirementsApex provides the broadest selection of fastener tools in the world. From this catalogyou can choose from over 5,000 individual items: from bits, sockets and handdrivers to universal wrenches, extensions and adapters. If the tool you need is not inthis catalog, call your Apex representative. We may have what you need as a noncatalog item—or our experienced staff of tooling experts can design and produceapplication specific fastener tools to suit your needs.iv

Apex is the standard on assembly lines around the world.Precision manufactured with the highest quality materials.Responsive service for all your fastener tool needs.Made in the U.S.A. since 1933.v

Important NotesUser safety tips Always wear safety glasses when using any tool. Always visually inspect tool for damage and cracking. Immediatelyreplace all damaged tools. Do not modify or alter any tool. Do not use tools beyond their limit or useful life. Contact Apex for the recommended operating torque of any tool.Selecting the proper heat treat for bitsChoosing the proper heat treat for screwdriver tools is important in achieving longtool life. Different applications, different operators, and different power tools requiredifferent heat treats. Apex offers a choice of three heat treat hardness levels in manyof our screwdriver bits to match the particular customer’s application. These heattreats are specified by a letter suffix as follows:X - The hardest heat treat availableI - Intermediate hardnessR - Lowest hardnessSelecting the heat treat best suited for a particular application may require some trialand error. The proper heat treat depends on the failure mode. If the bit breaks orshatters, select a bit with less hardness. If the failure mode is wear, select a harderbit. Many times both breakage and wear may occur within the same application. This can be due to a number of factors such a different operators, different torquevalues, and different power tool settings. In general, high torque applications require “R” heat treats to withstand twisting andresist breakage. The “X” heat treat is most suitable for low torque applications, particularly if hardened screws are used.If a failure occurs, a change in hardness may result in better service. The “X” heattreat is most common and should be selected unless the specifics of an applicationor an existing problem would suggest using “I” or “R” hardness. To specify a particular heat treat, add a letter suffix to the part number. For example,to specify “X” hardness in a #2 Phillips insert, the part number would be 440-2X.Not all Apex bits are available in all heat treats. Special heat treats can be suppliedfor a particular application. Contact your Apex representative for specificrecommendations.Warning Using any adapter may result in a torque overload and failure in the adapter, socket or fastener. Do not use thin wall sockets with impact power tools. Do not use universal wrenches with impact power tools.vi

SolutionsWhat’s the difference betweenan insert and a power bit?Insert bits are commonly used with a bitholder in power tool applications. Thiscombination is economical, providesflexibility and allows a fastener to be magnetically held by the bit. Power bits areplaced directly into the power tool chuck.See pages 48-52 for a complete listing ofApex bit holders. What’s the advantage of27 Series bits?27 Series bits are ideal for poorly recessedPhillips screws. A wider tip design fills outan inexact recess to make better contact. Why do Apex bits lastso much longer?Apex’s premium tool alloys and proprietaryheat treat help avoid typical problemssuch as shattering andpremature bit wear. Most Apex bits areavailable in three differentheat treat hardnesses.Refer to page vi for information onselecting the proper heat treat. What’s the advantage ofreduced diameter bits?Reduced diameter bits are ideal for drivingscrews below the surface of drywall. What’s theadvantageof Apex ACR bits?Painted, coated orcorrodedfasteners canpresent specialproblems. Apex ACR insert bits’special wing-face ribsgrip screw recesses to reduce strippingand cam-out which can result in damageto the surrounding workpiece. Choosefrom bits ribbed for screw removal, driving or both. They’re also available inboth insert bits and power drives.vii

SolutionsDoes Apex offer Torx bits?Is there an easy way to select a bit?Torx fasteners are becoming more andmore common in automotive andapplianceassembly. Apexprovides a fullselection of bits forTorx screws.Take the guesswork out of bitselection. Apex Phillipsand Torx ring gaugeshelp you find theright bit for yourfasteners.Order SD-3749 forPhillips and SD-4064-Gfor Torx .(See pages 19–25)Torx is a trademark of theCamcar Division of Textron. What is a finder sleeve?A finder sleeve makes it easy to engageslotted fasteners with the bit. It guides thebit so there is less ”searching” for theproper alignment between blade and slot.(See page 16)8Why do Apex bits last so muchlonger than other bits?Apex’s premium tool alloys andproprietary heat treat helpavoid typical problemssuch as shattering andpremature bit wear. MostApex bits are available inthree different heat treathardnesses.Refer to page vi forinformation on selectingthe proper heat treat.

What’s the difference between Torx and Torx Plus bits?Does Apex offer fastener tools forthe aircraft industry?Torx Plus bits and fasteners feature agreater engagement area for higher torquetransfer and reduced camout whendriving Torx Plus fasteners. Theycan provide up to 100%more drive cycles. TorxPlus bits are notcompatible with standardTorx fasteners.Apex offers a fullselection of fastenertools common toaircraft assembly andmaintenance, includingTri-Wing , Torq-Set ,Hi-Torque and Phillips.(See pages 43-48)(See pages 19–25)RegularTorx Torx Plus is a trademark of the Camcar Division of Textron.Torx Plus Tamper Resistent Bits are available on a limited basis. Pleasecontact your Area Distributor or Representative for more details.Torq-Set and ACR are registered trademarks of thePhillips Screw Company.Does Apex offer mar resistant bitsand sockets?Apex can nylon coat just about any of ourbits or sockets. Nylon offers excellent marresistance for assemblies that havepainted, varnished or chromed surfaces.Nylon also offers some safety benefits bycovering tool junctions. Contact your Apexdistributor or representative for moreinformation or for a quote. How do Torxalign bits work?Torxalign bits “wedge” into the Torx recess to firmly hold the fastener tothe bit.(See pages 19–24)What’s the difference between aPhillips and a Pozidriv screw? The shallow “cross” indention in thescrew head identifies a Pozidriv fastener. The Pozidriv bit and recess designprovides contact than astandard Phillips formore torque with lesspossibility of camout.(See pages 26 & 27)9
