National Behaviour Support ServiceGet The GistReading and Learning StrategyAfter Reading StrategyGet the Gist - SummarisingPurpose of the ‘Get the Gist’ strategy:‘Get the Gist’ (Cunningham, 1982) is an acronym for Generating Interactions between Schemataand Texts. It is summarising strategy. Effective summarising leads to an increase in studentlearning. Summarising requires students to focus on the main ideas of a text and to decide whatis important without omitting key ideas. The ability to summarise has significant benefits forcomprehending and ultimately retaining and recalling information. Teaching studentssummarising strategies, like ‘Get the Gist’, helps them learn to synthesise information, a higherorder thinking skill which includes analysing information and identifying key concepts.Explicitly teaching ‘Get the Gist’:Step 1Choose an informational paragraph from a science, history, etc. textbook. Scan the text pullingout any key ideas from the text features. Read the text. (Pick a textbook piece that containssome trivia, as well as several ideas). Put the text on the overhead or board. Read it aloud tostudents and demonstrate deleting the trivia, putting a line through the unnecessary text.Step 2Continue reading and demonstrate picking out the who, what, when, where, why of theparagraph and related important information.Step 3Demonstrate pulling together the above information into a 10/20-word ‘gist’ or summary.Step 4In pairs, guide students in completing a ‘Gist’ sheet or ‘Sum It Up’* sheet. Support students increating summaries until they can do them independently. The number of words in a ‘gist’summary can vary.* Sum It Up is a variation on this strategy. The teacher tells the students to imagine they aregoing to place an ad in the local newspaper on a specific topic and that each word they use willcost 10 cent. They only have 2.00 to spend, so they can only use 20 words in their summary(or 3.50 and 35 words, etc). An example of this strategy is in this resource.** Students’ summarising skills can be further developed by using other NBSS strategy resources e.g.Somebody Wanted But So, Summarising Maps, 5-4-3-2-1, Exit Slips.
