Space isprovided on the weekly schedule for assignmentdates, and flexibility in scheduling is encouraged.Teachers may adapt the scheduled days pereach unique student situation. As the studentcompletes each assignment, this can be markedwith an “X” in the box.Approximately 30 minutes per lesson, five days a week, for 36 weeksAnswer keys for worksheets are available onlineWorksheets and quizzes are included for each sectionDesigned for grade 2 in a one-year courseCourse DescriptionWelcome to the second book in the Math Lessons for a Living Education series! You will find that MathLessons for a Living Education is a unique approach to learning math. A blend of stories, copy work, oralnarration, and hands-on experience brings the concepts to life and invites the child to explore the worldaround them. The tone of this math book is meant to speak personally to each child, and the method easilyadapted to any teaching style. The first 30 lessons have a story about the twins, followed by a lesson, taught by Mom or Dad throughhands-on learning. Sometimes, this lesson is learned by the twins’ explorations in nature. After the story, there is a section for your children to practice the lesson they learned and to review what they have learnedearlier. “Quizzes” or reviews, whichever you want to use them as, are in the form of “letters to family andfriends.” The twins want to show them what they have been learning, and they need your children to helpthem! Your children show what they have learned by writing the letters for the twins. The last 6 lessons arefocused reviews, covering topics learned throughout the first 30 lessons.4Math Level 2

Course Objectives: Students completing this course willDDReview addition and subtraction, and basic numbers up to 100DDExplore new concepts like word problems, skip counting money and timeDDLearn how to read bar graphs and line graphs, as well as understanding basic measurementDDIdentify place values, regrouping concepts, and measurement with a thermometer.Teaching mathematics as a living subjectThis book is written to be used by you and yourchild together. It is the continuing story of Charlieand Charlotte, who are learning that life is full oflearning opportunities! As you read their story, yourchild will be drawn into the adventure along withthe twins. They will learn about numbers, shapes, place value, adding, and subtracting. They will alsolearn about the seasons, geography, and the love offamily. They will be invited to join the twins on theirliving math adventures. I hope you have a grandtime on this adventure. Have a wonderful timeexploring and learning! As a teacher and a mother, I have discoveredthat true education is based on relationships: therelationship the child makes with the amazingconcepts in the world around them; the relationshipthe teacher and the child make with each other; andmost importantly and ultimately, the relationshipthe child makes with their Creator. It is built ondiscovering the God of the Universe - the OneMath Level 2who holds the universe in His hands but at thesame time, lovingly indwells the heart of a littlechild. The story in Book 2 is meant to reach intoa child’s world, grab their attentions and invitethem into the learning process. The concepts arenot taught through drill only, but also throughencouraging the student to hone their criticalthinking skills and think outside of the box. Thiscurriculum teaches the student math, but it is notresult-oriented, focusing only on grades; instead itis skill and process oriented. I have discovered thatit is in the everyday that we grow and become. Itis in the little discoveries all along the path of lifethat we grow, learn, develop, and discover who Godis and, in turn, see ourselves the way He sees us.Math concepts are learned well, as it is learned inthe context of living, in the midst of discovery, andthrough the worldview glasses that focus on thebigger picture.5

About manipulativesIn the back of the book, you will find a manipulatives section. It is imperative that you prepare these beforeyou start the book. You will need these resources:1.contact paper and construction paper2.large index cards3.brass fasteners4.crayons, markers, and colored pencils5.glue or paste6.hole punch and hole reinforcers7.rings to keep flashcards together8.a plastic shoe box with lid in which to storemanipulatives9.(optional but helpful) stickers to use forflashcards10.pictures from old magazines11.poster board (several large pieces)12.dried beans, buttons, craft sticks all workwell13.4 containers for your Place Value Village(1 - xl, 1-large, 1-medium, 1-smaller)14.snack-size baggies15.foot ruler (with inches marked)16.simple indoor/outdoor thermometer(non-digital)17.Note about money manipulatives: you willneed to have the following money availablefor your child to use throughout this book: 10 dimes 20 nickels 100 pennies 4 quarters 5 - 1 billsHow to use everyday items as manipulativesContrary to popular opinion, you don’t need fancy, expensive, and special manipulatives to teachmath concepts. What? As shocking as that is, I canpersonally attest that it is 100 percent true; I’ve beendoing it for years. So how do you turn all thosesmall items that hang around your house and fillyour “junk drawer” into useful math manipulatives?Well, let’s start with my favorite, the trusty driedbean! When you are teaching your children placevalue, dried beans just might become your new bestfriends. How? Simply follow these steps:When your child is counting 0–9, simply placesingle beans into the ONE’S house, and have yourchild write on their P.V.V. Mat, the numbers 0–9.As we all know, only 9 ones can live in the ONE’Shouse, so all 9 beans jump out of their house and6join up with their new friend, Mr. Tenth bean! Theyall then jump into a snack size baggie (usable overand over) and go next door, to live in the TEN’Shouse. Repeat this process, until you have tenbaggies of beans trying to live in the TEN’S house.Of course, only nine can live there, so all the baggiesof ten get traded in for a 100s counter (included inthe manipulatives section) and make the move totheir new house, the HUNDRED’S house. Driedkidney beans are the best for this, as they are verysturdy! You can also use buttons, paper clips, orbasically any small item. They don’t even have to beall the same kind of item.Math Level 2

Place Value Village, Telling Time,Shapes and PatternsLesson1It had been a week since Charlie and Charlotte hadarrived home from their grandparents’ farm. They hadexperienced such a grand summer with Grandpa andGrandma learning about so many animals, plants, andpatterns in nature on the farm. Now that they were home, they were continuing to learn a lot. First off, Mom’sround tummy was growing, and they could feel theirbaby sister kicking from within. Just last night, Charlie hadcounted 20 energetic kicks, and today, at lunch, Charlottehad counted up to 50 vigorous kicks. Charlie and Charlotte simply couldnot wait to meet their new little sister! Grandma had explained to themabout this wonderful pattern, which God designed, of babies growingsecurely inside a mother’s body while their hearts and lungs grow strongereach day in a warm, safe environment, until they were ready to be born.Knowing God cared so much for their baby sister meant everything toCharlie and Charlotte!Math Level 2 – Lesson 115

Upon arriving home, Charlie and Charlotte also were excited to discoverthat Dad had added two new rooms onto their house to create more space fortheir growing family. The addition consisted of a nursery for the new baby anda schoolroom for Charlie and Charlotte. Filled with hundreds of exciting booksand an abundance of art supplies, Charlie and Charlotte could not wait for theschool year to begin! Mother had told them they were to start right after LaborDay, which is the first Monday in September. Looking at the new addition,Charlie and Charlotte could not help thinking about Grandpa’s Place ValueVillage. He had shown them the Hundreds House, the Tens House, and theOnes House. Bundling carrots in bundles of 10 with Grandpa and arrangingflowers with Grandma in bunches of 10 had helped them understand numbersand place value up to 100. They simply could not wait to add onto their ownPlace Value Village houses this year! One more change the twins quickly noticed was that Father had constructeda sturdy-looking pen and shed for Ann and Andy, Betsy’s lambs from Grandpaand Grandma’s farm. Nestled snugly in the corner of the yard, in the shape of arectangle, just like Pokey’s bed (Pokey was their pet box turtle), Ann and Andyseemed to already be enjoying themselves as they danced gleefully around intheir new home. Every morning at 7:30, right before breakfast, Charlie andCharlotte fed them, and Ann and Andy jumped and skipped happily about.Although Charlie and Charlotte missedGrandpa and Grandma and the farm, they really were glad to be home. Theywere extremely excited for schoolto start, and they could not wait todiscover more with Dad and Mom!Let’s begin our adventure togetherby reviewing counting and placevalue using our Place Value Village.16Math Level 2 – Lesson 1

TeacherNameExercise1Day1In preparation for teaching this lesson (and any other lessons aboutplace value), you will need to gather these items: At the back of this book, you will find several pages with your “Place Value Village.” Please cutout the “houses” and paste each piece on a separate piece of sturdy paper. It would be wise tolaminate each “house” to make it more durable. For this lesson, gather three cups or containers; one smaller, shorter one (for the ONES’ house),one medium one (for the TENS’ house),and one larger one (for the HUNDREDS’ house); wewill add the large THOUSANDS’ house later. To create your Place Value Village set, adhere your houses onto the side of the containers. Also have on hand numerous small items, such as dried beans (kidney beans work very well),10 snack size baggies and 9 one-gallon freezer bags. For the families just starting out in this series, detailed instructions for usingthe Place Value Village to teach place value and counting can be located in theintroduction of this book.Count out 20 beans by using your Place Value Village.
