LEARN ABOUTVenerable Mary Angeline TeresaOld age strikes all classes of people, leaving them alone and frightened. The elderly face health issues, the loss of loved ones andfriends, and the loss of being able to live on their own. Mother Angeline wanted homes for them to be the best, where the Sisters wouldtreat the elderly with dignity and loving care in a home-like setting.When she wasseven years old,her family movedfrom Ireland toScotland.At the age of 19, she joined theLittle Sisters of the Poor in Franceto take care of the elderly.In 1926, Mother Angeline wassent to the US, and was appointedSuperior of a home of the LittleSisters of the Poor in the Bronx,New York.Mother Angeline and hercompanions in 1929.In 1929, just at the start of TheGreat Depression, Mother Angelineand six other Sisters withdrew fromthe Little Sisters of the Poor. Theywere given permission to begin anew order of Sisters for the care of“See Christ in everyperson entrustedto our care.” Venerable MaryAngeline Teresathe aged based on Mother Angeline’s ideals – the Carmelite Sistersfor the Aged and Infirm.In 2019, the 90th Anniversaryof the Congregation was observed.They are considered pioneers inthe field of geriatrics, introducing‘person-centered care’ as the standard for caring for the elderly.“The Difference is Love” istheir trademark.Mother Angeline’s idea of caringfor the aged was brand new. Thehomes would include rehab andadd interesting activities andrecreation. Each home wouldhave a Chapel. A resident’spersonal, social and spiritualneeds would be met. Mother Angeline taught that themission of the Sisters was tobring Christ to every old person under their care.Today the Carmelite Sistersfor the Aged and Infirm takecare of residents in twenty-twonursing homes, assisted-livinghomes or independent livinghomes in 8 different states and onein Ireland.Mother Angeline received awardsfor her new way of caring for the elderly and promoting respect for lifein all its stages. Venerable Mary Angeline TeresaMAZESTARTHEREVenerable Mary Angeline Teresa’s life took many twists and turns, and included a good deal of traveling. She was born inIreland in 1893, moved to Scotland with her family at the age of 7. When she was 19 years old, she joined the Little Sistersof the Poor in France. In 1926, she was appointed to a home in the Bronx, NY. In 1929, Mother Angeline founded TheCarmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm. By 1984, the Sisters had served in 59 different facilities in New York State,Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Florida, Illinois, Ohio, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Hampshire, Kentucky, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Iowa, Connecticut, West Virginia, Michigan, Ireland and Scotland.Venerable Mary Angeline Teresa made an annual trip to each facility every year, until her failing health made it impossible.She would meet with each Sister, visit with the residents, and always thank the staff. Her visits ended with a special Mass ofThanksgiving to God in the Home’s chapel for past blessings and to ask for His help for the future. She lived up to her motto:Res Non Verba meaning Deeds not Words.
