1 Purpose of this specificationPearson BTEC International Level 2 Certificate, Extended Certificate and Diplomaqualifications in Health and Social Care are designed for international schools andcolleges. They are part of an international suite of BTEC qualifications offered byPearson. Theyoffer learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to preparethem for employment.On successful completion of a BTEC International Level 2 qualification, learners canprogress to continued study in the same or related vocational area and/or withinemployment in the Health and Social Care sector.BTEC International Level 2 CertificateThe BTEC International Level 2 Certificate is a work-related vocational qualificationthat focuses on particular aspects of employment in the appropriate vocationalsector. The BTEC International Level 2 Certificate is a qualification that can be part ofa learner’s programme of study which will give them a vocational learningexperience. The qualification has the potential to prepare learners for progression toan appropriate Level 3 programme in the same or related vocational area.BTEC International Level 2 Extended CertificateThe BTEC International Level 2 Extended Certificate extends the work-related focusfrom the BTEC International Level 2 Certificate and covers the key knowledge andpractical skills required in the appropriate vocational sector. Rationale for the Pearson BTEC International Level 2qualifications in Health and Social CareThe BTECs in Health and Social Care can be delivered in further education collegesand schools.The Pearson BTEC International Level 2 Certificate in Health and Social Care isavailable to learners aged 14 and over. It will give learners an introduction to thesector and potential progression to the Pearson BTEC International Level 2 ExtendedCertificate in Health and Social Care or the Pearson BTEC International Level 2Diploma in Health and Social Care.The Pearson BTEC International Level 2 Extended Certificate in Health and SocialCare is available to learners aged 14 and over. It is recommended that learnersundertake 60 hours of work placement and that all learners take Unit 5 VocationalExperience in a Health or Social Care Setting. The Pearson BTEC InternationalExtended Certificate in Health and Social Care will give learners an introduction tothe sector and potential progression to the Pearson BTEC International Level 2Diploma in Health and Social Care or the Pearson BTEC International Level 2 Diplomain Society, Health and Development. Progression could also be to higher levelqualifications, such as the Pearson BTEC International Level 3 Nationals in Health andSocial Care, BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Society, Health and Development or thePearson BTEC International Level 2 or 3 NVQs in Health and Social Care.The Pearson BTEC International Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care isavailable to learners aged 14 and over. It is recommended that learners undertake60 hours of work placement and strongly recommended that all learners take Unit 5Vocational Experience in a Health or Social Care Setting. The Pearson BTECInternational Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care will enable learners to gainmore experience and insight into the sector, and, therefore, learners whosuccessfully complete this qualification should be able to progress to employment inthe sector, in a supervised role. Progression could also be to further study, such asthe Pearson BTEC International Level 3 Nationals in Health and Social Care, thePearson Level 3 Diploma in Society, Health and Development or the Level 3 NVQs inHealth and Social Care.The Pearson BTEC International Level 2 qualifications contribute to the quality andcoherence of national provision in this sector. They provide an alternative route tothe academic and vocational GCSE provision, offering learners the opportunity toexperience the health and social care sector. National Occupational StandardsThese qualifications are designed to provide much of the underpinning knowledgeand understanding for the UK National Occupational Standards (NOS), as well asdeveloping practical skills in preparation for work and possible achievement ofNational Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) in due course. NOS form the basis of NVQs.BTECs do not purport to deliver occupational competence in the sector, which shouldbe demonstrated in a work context.Each unit in this specification identifies links to elements of the NOSThe Pearson BTEC International Level 2 in Health and Social Care relate to the NOSwhich form the: NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care. 3 Centre resource requirementsAs part of the approval process, the centre must make sure that the resourcerequirements below are in place before offering Pearson BTEC International Level 2qualifications. The centre must have appropriate physical resources (for example equipment, IT,learning materials, teaching rooms) to support delivery and assessment. Staff involved in the assessment process must have relevant expertise andoccupational experience. There must be systems in place to make sure that there is continuing professionaldevelopment for staff delivering the qualifications. The centre must have in place appropriate policies that relate to the delivery of thequalification. The centre must deliver the qualifications in accordance with current equalitylegislation.
