As well enabling students to attain theiracademic ambitions, DLD College is well-known for its informal andfriendly ethos.WHAT IS A BTEC?BTECs are specialist qualifications that are an alternative to A Levels.DLD College offers BTEC qualifications that are the equivalent to eitherthree A Levels or just one A Level, depending on the option chosen.The qualifications are recognised by 100 countries worldwide and ourDLD graduates have gone on to study in Monaco, Chicago and someof the best universities in the UK. BTEC graduates have attendeda number of Russell Group Universities including Bristol, Liverpool,Nottingham and Sheffield. In 2019, over a quarter of students acceptedinto higher education held at least one BTEC qualification.
HOW DO THEY DIFFERFROM A LEVELS?BTECs offer students a variety ofassessment methods which allowsthem to build on their strengths.Each course provides students witha mix of project based assessmentswhich typically involve employerlinks, as well as written tests, onlineassessments and examinations.BTECs have grown in popularity inrecent years because they allowstudents to express theirunderstanding practically, as well astheoretically.We are incredibly proud of our linkswith employers. Our BTEC studentshave recently worked withTicketmaster, the British FilmInstitute (BFI) and Harrods.Having the opportunity to engagewith real world employers is anelement that separates out BTECcourses from traditional study. Thisprovides students with an insightinto the real world and it preparesthem for University and employmentalike.
AN AWARD WINNINGEDUCATIONBoth our teachers and students have been presented with nationalawards in recognition of their excellence. In 2016, Media Productiontutor John Branney was presented with the ‘Most Inspirational TeacherAward’ at the Shine Awards. In 2017, our BTEC Media Productionstudents were presented with the ‘Showstopper Challenge Award’ bythe exam board Pearson.
WHAT BTEC PATHWAYSDOES DLD OFFER?PATHWAY CHOICESProspective students can choose from three different pathways atDLD. We offer Business, Digital Media Production and Music Technology. Students studying either Business and Digital Media Productioncomplete their course over two years and are awarded BTEC Level 3Extended Diploma, which is the equivalent of three A levels. BUSINESSBTEC Extended Diploma in Business is a qualification studied over twoyears that is the equivalent of three A-Levels. DLD College has recently established a one-year, fast track course forYear 13 students. The BTEC Certificate in Business is the equivalentof one full A-Level as is targeted at students who are seeking to raisetheir UCAS profile. They would typically study this course alongside amixture of other courses, whether they be academic or vocational. Thisis a very demanding course so students should expect to complete alot of work independently.The BTEC Business department has formed strong links with localbusinesses and charities and students will benefit from a variety of tripsand visits from guest speakers to support their learning.
DIGITAL MEDIAPRODUCTIONProspective students can choose between two options.BTEC Extended Diploma in Digital Media Production is a two-yearcourse that is the equivalent of three A-Levels. Thiscourse has been established asa fast track for Year 13 studentswho are seeking to increase theirUCAS profile. This is a verydemanding course so studentsshould expect to complete a lot ofwork independently.DLD College’s central locationprovides excellent opportunitiesfor Media students. The BFI,British Film Institute is afive-minute walk away as is theNational Theatre. BBC televisionstudios are easily accessible bylocal transport.
MUSICTECHNOLOGYBTEC Extended Certificate in Music Technology is a two-year coursethat is the equivalent of one full A-Level. Students typically study thisalongside two additional A-Level qualifications. This course is aimed atstudents who are interesting in music producing, not music performing.They do not require any musical experience so it is more accessiblethan A-Level Music.The course is composed of five units, two of which are mandatory andone of which is externally assessed.The two mandatory units are: Music & Sound for MediaDigital Audio Workstation (DAW) ProductionStudents choose, in close consultation with their teacher, three optionalunits, designed to support progression to relevant occupational areas,and to a range of sector-related courses in higher education.They cover content areas such as: Creative Synthesis and SamplingRemixing & ReworkingMixing and Mastering TechniquesCommercial Music ProductionStudents benefit from state-of-the-art resources such as our onsitemusic studio to give them a real-life experience. Our teachers all havestrong links with key players in industry and students will have theopportunity to engage with visiting speakers and to go out on trips.
EMILY KEOGHBTEC in Digital Media Production: D*D*DDestination: Bournemouth UniversityCourse: Multimedia JournalismEmily was one of DLD’s most exceptional BTEC Media Students.Arriving in September 2017 from Francis Holland School with a strongset of GCSE grades, Emily chose to study the BTEC qualificationbecause she wanted to strike a judicious balance between theoreticaland practical learning. She also favoured the real-world scenariosprovided by the vocational nature of the course. From day one she hada clear goal to become a broadcast journalist.Emily excelled on the BTEC and was one of the highest achievingstudents from her peer group. She was an incredibly confident student,with exemplary written and practical work produced throughout theyear. Outside of her studies she took more opportunities to develop herjournalistic skills. Recognising her passion and ambition DLDencouraged Emily to seek unique development opportunities outsideof the classroom, last summer she travelled to Fiji to support a charitywhilst documenting the experience. She attended a GuardianMasterclass on Online Journalism and is a member of the NationalUnion of Journalists. Emily made a vital contribution to College life andwas one of the founding members and champions of DLD Pride.Emily was a keen advocate for the BTEC programme at parentsevening and presented a series of online features for the College. Hercontributions led to her being chosen to represent the studentcouncil in her final year at DLD. Emily fully deserves her excellentBTEC results and will flourish at university.
HUSSEIN HASHIMBTEC in Business: DDMDestination: Royal Holloway University of LondonCourse: Business ManagementFrom the outset, Hussein showed himself to be a very determinedstudent with a strong work ethic, and a positive attitude and approachto learning. He chose to study BTEC Business because he felt that themodular approach and links with industry would support his desire topursue a career in a large business and in the future to own his owncompany.Hussein resilience and determination led to him achieving a numberof awards for achievement during his time on the BTEC Businessprogramme. It was a delight to see his confidence grow through theduration in the course. For example, he delivered an excellent pitch forhis ‘Starting a Small Business’ coursework. His work was wellsupported with appropriate evidence and research which clearlyidentified the target market and competition. By the end of hispresentation “potential investors” were well and truly convinced that hisbusiness idea would be a rousing success! Hussein used the summerbreak to reinforce his learning by carrying out work experience,working in a number of different roles in order to develop an insight intoall aspects of successful businesses.Beyond the classroom, Hussein was a well-liked member of theCollege community. He was successfully voted onto the StudentCouncil after a rigorous selection and interview process. Everyone whomet him was impressed by his maturity and gentle nature. There is nodoubt that Hussein will thrive at university and we look forward toseeing his business empire grow.
