By Mark PolkI continue to see a trend for smaller, lighter more fuel efficient RVs. Thistrend has been developing for a fewyears now and is more prominentthroughout the industry. It is noticeable in both towable andmotorized RV categories. As automobileand truck manufacturers strive to meetstringent EPA and CAFE fuelregulations and guidelines vehicles aredownsized and the engines poweringthese vehicles are smaller too. Smaller, lighter more fuel efficient trucks andSUVs result in RV manufacturersdownsizing towable trailers so thesevehicles are still capable of safelytowing trailers.I have noticed an increase in Type Band B-Plus production at previousshows I attended over the past coupleof years, but it seemed to me that therewere more smaller Type A motorhomeson display in Louisville this year.Numerous RV manufacturers hadinnovative scaled down versions ofType A motorhomes like the Itasca Reyopictured above. This 2014 25-footReyo is built on a Mercedes BenzSprinter chassis.“ Smaller Type A motorhomesmake sense to me. They areeasy to maneuver, more fuelefficient and offer everything youwill find in a larger motorhome.”www.rvconsumer.com6

I decided to take a closer look at thistrend of smaller Type A motorhomesso I stopped by to look at the ItascaReyo’s cousin, the Winnebago Via.Like the Reyo the Via is built on theMercedes Benz Sprinter chassis andcomes in 3-floorplans, each 25 feet inlength. The Via comes packed withfeatures like the infotainment centerwith RV GPS, Smart Space andSmart Storage. The model pictured isthe 25T.And the 25 T has a flex bed system tofit your particular sleeping needs.(pictured below)The 25 T has a sofa slide-out and thedisplay model had the optionaldriver’s door. Inside you can pick fromthree rich wood treatments.www.rvconsumer.com7

At just over 25’ in length and 11’ tall youcan go just about anywhere you want toand the Ford Triton V10 will get youthere with no problem.Winnebago wasn’t the only RVmanufacturer showcasing downsizedType A motorhomes. Over at the Thordisplay I found the new RUV orRecreational Utility Vehicle. As the signsays they are for the consumer whowants a small, easy to drive RV that isaffordable and flexible. Thor had theAxis and Vegas models on display. The interior of the Axis was laid outsimilar to the 25T Via with the sofa slideand rear bed configuration. If you prefer something smaller than thesedownsized Type A motorhomes there arelots of choices in the Type B and B-Plusmarkets. When I was at the Pa. RV &Camping show earlier last year I coveredmany of the smaller motorhomes.www.rvconsumer.com8

One in particular was the WinnebagoTrend that was built on new RamProMaster chassis with a 3.6L V6The Sprinter chassis has been thechassis of choice for the Type B and BPlus builders for many years but thatmay change in the near future. When Ivisited the Ford display at the show I ranacross this Ford Transit that will beentering the RV marketplace soon. It hasa GVWR of 9,000 lbs. and will bepowered by a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 that isexpected to get 20% better fuel economythen the 4.6L V8 . Watch out Sprinter!gasoline engine There are two 23’floorplans and both offer a poweredStudioLoft bed up front that lifts tightto the ceiling to conserve space duringthe day.If you need just a little more room thereis the 2014 Winnebago View Profile onthe Mercedes Benz Sprinter chassis. The 24G model on display had a sofaslide on the road side, and a rear slidefor the queen bed.www.rvconsumer.com9

There were lots of Type C motorhomeson display too, which work well for afamily that prefers a motorized RV overa towable RV. (Jayco Jayhawk pictured)Here are some interior pictures of the 29D.And for the adventurous type I amseeing more and more 4X4 versionslike this Melbourne 29D by Jaycopictured below. I was intrigued by the4X4 motorhome and decided to take acloser look at it.The Melbourne comes in two floorplans, both slightly over 31-feet in length andbuilt on a Ford E-450 Super dutychassis.www.rvconsumer.com10

If you prefer larger motorhomes thereare still plenty to choose from in 2014.Monaco, who filed bankruptcy duringthe recession and was purchased byNavistar ,was sold to Allied SpecialtyVehicles (ASV) from Navistar RV in Mayof 2013. The sale included Monaco,Holiday Rambler, R-Vision and severalother brands.ASV also had a cut-away of a 2015Holiday Rambler Vacationer 36DBTpictured below.ASV had a 2015 Monaco Dynasty ondisplay as well as Holiday Ramblermotorhomes and Trail Lite models fromits towable line-up.2015 Monaco Dynasty interior & exteriorwww.rvconsumer.com11

Tiffin had a strong presence with it’sline-up of 2014 motorhomes. Forexample take a look at this 2014Phaeton 40 QBH on a Freightlinerchassis powered by a Cummins ISL380 HP engine. The pictures speak for themselveswww.rvconsumer.com12

On the towable side of the house thesame applied, there was every style andtype trailer on display, from little to large. And there were Hybrid trailersMy friends from Little Guy TeardropCamper were there with several modelson display.Solaire by PalominoThere were folding camping trailersRealtree Base Camp by Livin Litewww.rvconsumer.com13

There were truck campersAnd Lance showed off their new2212KS Toy Hauler. Nice!Backpack edition by PalominoLance 1181www.rvconsumer.com14

PROJECT TERRYSimilar to my old Yellowstone vintage trailer restoration project in 2011Project Terry was the restoration of a 1978 Terry travel trailer. Some folks inthe RV industry were discussing how to showcase the availability ofreplacement parts and accessories in the RV industry and the result wasProject Terry. The trailer restoration project received great support from RVparts and accessories manufacturersand had editorial coverage from RVMagazine. Coast Distribution, a largeparts distributor, coordinated the project.follow the entire restoration project herewww.rvconsumer.com20

Project Terry was on display in Louisville and it was fun to look at all the workand detail that went into the restoration project. In the spring of 2014 ProjectTerry will be auctioned on eBay and all proceeds from the sale will be donatedto the RV Industry Hall of Fame & Museum in Elkhart Indiana.www.rvconsumer.com21

Polk’s Top 5 RV EssentialItemsIn my Checklists for RVers e-book Ilist 20 essential items you shouldnever leave without on an RV trip.Today I am going to condense thatlist to my top 5 RV essential items. Here we go!#1electrical adapters you should alwaystake an extension cord along on RVtrips. Ideally you want an extensioncord that is designed specifically foryour RV’s electrical system with thesame gauge wire and ends thatmatch the RV and the campgroundservice your RV is rated for. Typicalhousehold extension cords are notrated for 30 plus amps. If you do usea household type extension cord itshould be at least 10-gauge wire.Electrical Adapters &Extension CordYou never know what type ofelectrical service you mightencounter during your RV travels.Depending on your RV you will needelectrical adapters that allow you toplug-in to the electrical serviceprovided. There are electricaladapters that go from 50-amp to 30amp, 30-amp to 20-amp etc. Irecommend keeping a variety ofthese adapters on hand in your RV.Keep in mind that if you do plug-in toa 20 amp service you will be limitedin what 120 volt devices you can usein the RV. In addition to variouswww.rvconsumer.com25

#2Sewer Hose Connectors &AdaptersIt never fails, one day you are going tocamp at a destination and discover youdon’t have the right adapter for thecampground sewer or dump stationdrain outlet. The reason for this is notonly do sewer drain outlets come indifferent sizes, but some are smoothpipe while others are threaded pipe.Companies like Valterra Products offersolutions for all these different types ofcampground sewer and dump stationconnectors with kits designed to workin nearly all situations you encounteralong the way.In addition to a selection of sewerhose connectors and adapters it’s agood idea to take an extra length ofsewer hose, like a 10-foot and a 20foot hose. You never know how faraway you will be parked from thecampground sewer drain.I also recommend using a heavyduty type sewer hose. They do notcost that much more and will lastmuch longer than a standard hose.SewerSolutionVideoAnother option is to use a productlike the Sewer Solution. It is similar toa macerator but doesn’t requireelectricity. Watch Videowww.rvconsumer.com26

#3PlayVideoDrinking Water Hose &Regular Garden HoseYou always want a potable drinkingwater hose long enough to get you outof any jam. I keep a 4-foot, 10-foot and25-foot drinking hose in the RV at alltimes.DrinkingHoseVideoRV Water RegulatorsLast but not least I alwaystake a ordinary garden hosefor cleaning, flushing tanksand other purposes. Thishose should be green, blackor gray in color. Most RVdrinking hoses are white sothe color will help youdistinguish between the two.Another essential component of thepotable drinking hose is a waterregulator. You never know what thewater pressure will be at thecampground. A regulator will protectyour RV plumbing system from highwater pressure that is common atmany campgrounds. Always connectthe regulator at the source of the waterto regulate pressure before it entersthe RV. I also recommend turning thewater source coming into the RV off ifyou plan to be away from the RV.www.rvconsumer.com27

#4#5Electrical Test Meter and/orSurge GuardI keep a digital plugin voltmeter on handat all times. You canuse it to check thepolarity and voltageat the campgroundprior to plugging theunit in. And you can also monitor thevoltage throughout your trip to protectyour appliances and electronicequipment from being damaged by highor low campground voltage.Tip: Voltage below 105 volts or above130 volts can potentially damageelectronic devices and appliances.Water Filtration SystemI highly recommend some type ofwater filtration system . There areseveral types available designedspecifically for use with RVs. Youcan install an under the counter filterto a faucet just for drinking water, oryou can use an external filtersystem designed to filter all of thewater going into the RV.Some RVs come equipped with awater filter housing alreadyinstalled. If not, and you would liketo install a filtration system in yourRV here is one of my RV how tovideos that might be helpful.I also use a product called Surge Guardthat is designed to protect your RV’selectrical system and sophisticatedelectronic equipment from damage.PlayVideoPlayVideoThese 5 items are from my RVessential items checklist in myChecklists for RVers E-bookwww.rvconsumer.com28
