Mystery PerimetersThe Mystery Perimeters lesson is a sample frommy complete ebook, Exploring Perimeter. All ofthe lessons in that book follow the same formatwith a detailed teacher information pagefollowed by ready-to-use printables and activitypages. This lesson uses inches for measurement, but the complete lesson in Exploring Perimeteralso includes a metric variation that usescentimeters. Mystery Perimeters is CommonCore Aligned for 3rd grade, and it also makes agreat review for grades 4 and 5, especially for those students who needa concrete, hands-on lesson to understand how to find unknownpolygon side lengths. Mys te r y Per i me ter sCCSS 3.MD.D.8Targeted SkillDetermining the lengths of unlabeled sides of irregular polygons inorder to calculate perimeterMaterials Mystery PerimeterOverviewThe Mystery Perimeters lesson involves using logical reasoning and/ormeasurement to find out the lengths of irregular polygons.Directions1. Start with the Mystery Perimeters Demo and display it on aninteractive whiteboard or overhead projector. Read theinformation at the top and ask students how they might be able tofigure out the lengths of the missing sides. Depending on yourstudents, they may need to use square tiles, an inch ruler, or aninch grid overlay to figure it out (page 6).2. If your class is ready for logical reasoning, use the MysteryPerimeters Demo Hints on page 5 to help them see that you candivide the irregular shape into three rectangles and find thelengths of the segments. After you divide the shape intorectangles, you can figure out the lengths of the missing sides bycomparing them to the opposite parallel sides.3. To check answers, display the Mystery Perimeters Demo Answers.Allow time to discuss various strategies for solving the problem.4. Assign the Mystery Perimeters worksheet on page 6 or 7. Thecopy with the grid is helpful for struggling students. You can alsohave them work with a partner and discuss strategies.Laura’s TipsTo help students identify the oppositehorizontal and vertical parallel sides, have them color code the lines. Forexample, they can outline all of thehorizontal lines in blue and the verticallines in green. When using addition orsubtraction to find the missing sidelengths, they will be able to focus on justthe lines in a particular color. (Thanks toJoy Darden for this tip!) Demos (plain, withhints, and with thegrid overlay)RulersMystery Perimetersworksheet (p 7 or 8)Supporting ActivityFloor Tile Perimeters - Use square floor tiles toteach perimeter. Create a large irregular polygonmade of 2 rectangles like the ones in this lesson.Mark the dimensions of a few of the sides usingthe length of one tile as a unit. Show thepolygon to your students and ask them to figureout the missing lengths. Place polygon on thefloor and line up with the tiles to check.Mystery Perimeters Answers #1 - S 2 in and 3 in, P 18 in #2 - S 4 in and 4 in, P 20 in 2013 Created by Laura Candler Teaching Resources www.lauracandler.com3
